1.
Ah, my 'baby' returns - I wondered where it had been hiding out

I was the first owner of this after it was reviewed in Guitar mag.

Really nice bass, so light and super versatile, great covers band gigging bass as it switches so fast from Jazz to Precision to high definition active sounds at the flick of a switch, even has a bass boost option for soloing.

Hope it goes to a nice home :)
Hi Molan! Yeah its in fab condition, the owner afterwards looked after it brilliantly as well. Do you know how the active passive electronics work? I was looking for a battery input, still puzzles me - but thats not hard. I'm still a lil apprehensive on selling this one because its hard to find a bass for small hands that has that kinda tone.

  2.
Phew...glad it's not an X-factor or I's defo be upset! :)
Not too keen on the Key Factor though...no fret extention!

    But, a great bass nonetheless.
No need for fret extension! 24 frets

  3. Hi Basschatters,

Heres a bit of a Funk Machine, a 1994 USA Californian Custom made Kubicki Key Factor. This bass was made as the Review Model for this series and featured in Guitar Magazine, of which I own a copy which will come with the bass, along with a hardshell case.

I'm looking to trade/part exchange at current, with cash either way. I'd prefer to downgrade but send me a PM regardless if your interested (can also provide a cash only price).Reason I'm moving it on is because I'm looking to play in student pubs/clubs and I'd rather knock something about a little less rare n valuable!

    Specs:

34" Bolt on Hard Rock Maple Neck with Curved Brazilian Rosewood 24 fret fingerboard. Jazz neck profile with signature kubicki dash inlays (Recommend for speedy players with small hands!)
Gloss Polyurethane Tobacco Sunburst Eastern Soft Maple body bearing "Factor by Phillip Kubicki".
    Black M4 Schaller/Kubicki alloy hardware.
Custom Wound Kubicki hum cancelling soapbar pickups.
Stacked volume and tone knobs for each soapbar and 6 way preamp selector.
    Plush interior Hardshell case (non-kubicki)

The bass can provide both active and passive Jazz and Precision bass tones. How?! six way preamp selector. The bass also has a flat motown style sound, useful for Rocco Prestia and your James Jamerson covers. The 6th position mutes the bass and all feedback entirely, which is a handy addition. Uses the same electronics as the Kubicki Ex factor for your Stu Hamm and Vail Johnson tones but is tuned at the headstock as opposed to the bridge and has 24 frets instead of 23. Just a lil sound clip here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PCN2uHZ61U

The bass has been previously setup and well looked after - has minimal fretwear, action is low and the neck is straight. The pickups are cureved and act as a ramp in line with the curve of the fretboard. Well looked after only some hairline scratches. Can provide more photos if needed.

  4. Oh!!! Its you!!! Crazy four-finger-right-hand-technique guy! :) I want you to be my bass tutor. I'm still struggling to break out of the Billy Sheehan thing, but I got the double thumb down. Equipment wise I use d'addario strings, so we're halfway there ay? . Thats a lurrrvelly bass, really like the neck and headstock. Your other singlecut sei was pretty darn suave too! Whats your day job? lol  Do you play any gigs across in Cardiff???

  5.
Don't expect a Rockbass to sound much like a German Warwick. They're made of a different body, neck and fingerboard wood where a lot of the Warwick sound comes from.

That said - they are good basses :).
I started on one of those, I just didn't like the blue finish. I'd thoroughly recommend one.......n then a Cort A4, £900 bass for half the price.

  6. Hey Guys, thanks for the comments. Photos posted to the GB porn thread :) . The Goodfellow is a flawless bass, built like a tank and amazing for the fingerstyle I play! Haven't tried slap much, I think it would need some heavier strings I have light rotosounds on it now. Does anybody know what other basses use Kent Armstrong pickups?? Does Bernie use them still or are the new electonics custom made for him alone?

  7. Hi Basschatters!

Just wanted to see what you think of my collection so far!

First up is my ESP PC-2V Semi-Acoustic Guitar. Incredible Jazz/Blues sound from a couple of JB Seymour Duncan Pickups. The reason I got it was because it was a compromise of Johnny. A and Robbenford meets George Benson and Ted Nugent. I mainly use it for rock music through a Marshall MG15 cdr. Best guitar I've played and will probably never sell, its the closest thing I've seen to a Gibson for £700, now £850. Set neck Mahogany body and rosewood fingerboard with abalone binding. Abalone and mother of pearl block inlays, gold hardware (grover tuners) and a licensed Bigsby tremolo bar. Three piece maple neck and flamed maple top in tobacco sunburst - Just need to change the pickups and its VERY close to a gibson. Plays very well for those with small hands, Great neck!

Second is my limited edition, USA Californian Charvel Star Bass, distributed this time by Fender instead of Jackson with molded hardshell case (Very niiice). I bought this because of it being my favourite 80s Glam Rock guitar (Eddie Van Halen, Chris Holmes of WASP, Scorpions etc) although I have not yet touched it because I plan to turn it into a project; Eddie Van Halen meets Billy Sheehan. A relation of mine has agreed to do the Frankenstein paint job over the body only (still want the brand logo) and I will then add a drop D tuner and two Precision pickups, i'm thinking the Dimarzio Willpowers but will appreciate suggestions and advice :) . Lovely alder body and hard rock eastern maple neck and rosewood fingerboard (no laquer!) so its nice and fast. Badass II bridge and Gotoh black hardware. The Pickups are the only thing I don't agree with: seymour Duncan hotrods, just standard sound nothing special at all, cant stand seymour duncan basslines. I traded this bass with 'the Beat' and would do so again in the future!

My most recent bass, 1994 Californian Kubicki Key Factor, serial no.11 and used in Guitar Magazine as the review model for this series, a copy of which I own. I think its had two owners prior to me, who have kept it in fantastic condition (Mr Molan and Vmaxblues) Not gonna lie, never seen one of these before in my life, however I know of the Ex Factor model and it produces the exact same sound, INCREDIBLE SLAP TONE!!! (Vail Johson/Stu Hamm) Unfortunately i'm not really a slap style player, but I can learn :D . The bass has an alder body with a sunburst finish and a 34" hard rock eastern maple neck with a 24 fret rosewood fretboard, black schaller/kubicki custom hardware (sturdy bridge!) and some interesting electronics which I haven't figured out! Theres a six way switch which provides 1.mute/ no feedback, like an off switch 2. Active Jazz bass tone, with growl! 3. Active precision tone, very punchy 4. Fender-esque Jazz passive tone 5. pass precision tone 6. Flat Bass tone. I traded this bass with 'Vmaxblues' and the Protec case with 'Jay the music guy' - Both great people to deal with! :D

Saving the best till last! My 1985 Goodfellow Classic Custom, Serial no. 0030 and checked with Bernie Goodfellow to be an original. Looks like what the GB Rumour model was based on. The bass has a quilted maple top and spalted/quilted maple back, with a slab of walnut in between bound by mahogany. The neck is 34" five piece mahogany/maple with a 21 frets ebony fingerboard, bound again by mahogany which carries on to cover the headstock. The bass has custom Goodfellow Gold hardware with his surname engraved into the bridge and 'classic' upon the truss rod cover. The bass has 'g' engraved into the machineheads and has messacre ebony tuning pegs. The headstock bears the 'G' symbol and has 'made in England' underneath. The pickups are kent armstrong custom wound with wooden ebony covers boasting a thumb groove for easy playing. 5 rotary knobs : Volume, bass, mid, treb and pickups balancer. Active bass requiring two batteries for its silly amount of power (i only use it up halfway tops) and ability to switch to passive. Can play anything. Recently setup by Cardiff Guitars: relubricated, electronics cleaned, action set low with no bend in the neck etc. Gator ABS case purchased from 'Bassbunny' very nice chap too ;) . Most comfortable bass I've ever played. Genius. Got the look, sound and playability. I bought this from a guy playing in a pub, just walked up and made him an offer.

Now for my Rig: Ashdown Superfly with 2x10 inch speaker cabinet. I've heard about a lot of issues to do with the amp head, something about chinese components and whining but I've never had an issue with mine, turned it on for a whole day to check and nothing. I used a lot of Roland equipment and use a lot of preamp models so this was ideal for me! I dont drive either, so the light weight is both easy on the back and I can carry it on and off the bus haha. I've never created any of my own presets because of the twenty already there, I always find what I'm looking for. The rig looks pretty suave too  . I intend to get the second 1x15 cab in the near future.

Finally, these two I'd HIGHLY recommend for the beginning, if you want to fast track your learning. The Boss DR-880 (version II), has some preset drum and bass tracks, great for timing and ear training! Should be able to pick one up off of ebay for about £170. You can also switch off the bass tracks and leave the drums on their own; so take out your chord book and start to improvise for a couple of hours each day, builds up stamina and creativity and all that jazz.
Roland Cube30 Bass Amp, Roland and Boss do some of the best learning equipment and this is the best practice amp I've ever used, take it everywhere with me. Has preset amplifiers and tone shape, compressor, delay, wah, reverb, flanger, chorus, gain etc. Shame they dont do Rigs!!!

THATS THE LOT!!! (apart from the Marshall MG 15CDR)

    Comments please!

    Cheers
    Oli
