  1. About 19 years ago, i was ordered to go to some music instrument and stuff exhibition. I suddenly saw it and couldn't walk away. I did't even knew a brand that made it, but it looked perfect for me and then we talked over the details about it and i bought it. Here it is - Italian hand made - D'alessandro 5 string fretted nechthrough.

  2. I got a situation, when some band invited me to rehearsal, to jam and discuss the situation. At that time my expierience with bas bass was 20 years. I went to the rehearsal and played mainly with drummer, catched his groove normally and played just 20 minutes. They said -NO, You will not play with us. I got angry and just left. Then i understood that i played to good. I played some difficult grooves and i think they thought - this guy will destroy our sound with that dominant bass. But why did they say me, i could play at 50% easy stuff and just keep a simple bass lines perfectly.

In similar way, like the Gary Willis track you posted, these players of a high standard are lyrical and melodic when soloing around the changes or, performing solo pieces.

They know in their head, exactly what the next note (or phrase) will be, rather than letting the fingers aimlessly lead the way searching for notes.

Gary Willis absolutely knows the next note, that is why his solos sound so melodic and never ever the same. He uses his heart, brain and soul together with solfeggio develope a perfect composition.

I don't see how this is possible in a band of 4 people. Then in a bigger band it becomes more and more difficult to find music that every member of the band likes and that will engage the audience.

No wonder so many of you don't want to gig and prefer to stay at home on your own.

To me that's the opposite of why I play music. The sum of the parts and the socialising is what makes music fun.

I hate not gigging. I have absolutely zero interest in recording, whether solo or with others, the only thing that lights my fire is playing live to an audience. I especially like gigging with material that has room for improvisation. I enjoy the fact that the  band and the audience know we are never more than a few seconds away from a complete train wreck, but still somehow stay on the tracks. The guitarist in my main gigging band will shoot me a certain look when he is about go way off piste - it's a kind of challenge he likes to lay down, and I enjoy following him into the unknown.

Possibly. But bass players? What does a bass player do who is not playing with other musicians?

Exactly - if You are not giging then there is no need for rehearsals. And how can You show Your you tube videos and make people love them without showing Yourself live  ?

There are musicians beyond count that learn and practise their chosen instruments, or sing, or compose, in the privacy of their homes, with no intention nor desire to perform in public. Maybe, perhaps, for a family event or a social evening, but not 'gigging' in the accepted sense of regular outings, often for money. I suspect, but cannot prove, that there are more amateur musicians than gigging ones on the planet. :|

I do not see a musician future kind in this way.

I'm not, you said gigging is a musicians whole life (or at least that is what I assume you meant), which it doesn't really need to be.

I didn't meant the whole full life. As a musician You can clearly live Your 2nd. life - work, family, friends, but if You call Yourself as a musician now, You must do that moving stuff and gig. You can't just sit at home and write C, F,G and call yourself as a musician - these are novadays not Beeethoven.

I would dispute that. We play Sex on Fire and I find no enjoyment playing it. it isn't a fun song to play, it has no interesting parts to it, there are no technical challenges with it, and it doesn't really groove.

I carry on playing it because the others want to and the audience like it for whatever reason, just one of those songs you have to get through to get to more interesting ones.

We won't play anything we haven't practiced, not even an easy one as it will mess up live. OK, the song is easy but the 'well I listened to the youtube version, oh I listened to the album version with another verse and a longer ending' etc.

We had to do the dreary 'run' by snow patrol. Sent a link round, didn't get time for a practice as people were off ill, busy working etc. But so trivial figured it was ok to do without a practice. Sent the link out to the song. Got to play it live, the guitarist didn't go into the verse in the right place and stopped a verse early looking confused. He hadn't followed the link, he had just typed it into youtube and got the radio edit.

Luckily everyone was so bored by that point they didn't really notice, but still.

No it isn't. Beethoven never gigged his songs, but he was clearly a musician, Kate bush didn't gig for 35 years.  Many musicians have never been on stage or had any desire to be.

We have our own likes / dislikes

How can You even compare Beethoven with primitive rock band.

  9. I just ended practising and put my bass back in to the stand and turned away and suddenly my leg swirled the stand and it lost control over the bass and it got out and fell dow right on the floor. In panic i started to check out if everything is ok and - yes, it was fine. D'oh

I can't be the only one, can I?

Don't get me wrong, I love being in a band, hanging around with my mates making music, that's where the pleasure comes from for me. I know public performance is the pinnacle of being in a band for most people, but I'm just not feeling it. The way I feel at the minute, I honestly wouldn't care if I never played in public again

Lugging gear around, trying to fit it all in the car. Spending the best part of an hour at the other end unloading it and setting everything up. Standing round like a spare part waiting to go on, then performing to a load of annoying, well lubricated people, who, in many cases aren't even interested. Only to have to break everything back down while the audience who haven't shown a bit of interest all night, start demanding "more". Then lug everything around back into the car, drive home, lug it around again into the house and finally get to relax about 3 hours after the people you've been "entertaining" have gone to bed.

The only part I actually enjoy is if we get time for a couple of cheeky pints after the gig.

    Why do I do it?

I can't believe what are You saying. It's musicians hole life. Yes, sometimes it's not easy and boring, but think about that 1 hour You will feel being on stage, every second, minute. There will always be someone liking/disliking Your music, but believe me - it IS worth it. Don't let yourself be lockdowned only because of the gear transporting problem. I actually like better playing every time with my own gig and have it complected the way i don't have problems to carry or put it in to the car. It all starts here !!!

  11. This is the same - which bass is the best in the world. There is no answer. Every brand has their own moments, which they hide from other brands, that let them sound different. You can't say that Ibanez is better than Fender for the sound or otherside. You just check them out by time goes on and finally, believe me - You will find YOUR bass or even 2 for different very good sounding. At least this happened with me after 10 years exploring the world.

  12. Hi, my nickname is nilorius and i live in Latvia, Riga. I like a lot of different kind of music starting from 60 till now. I have played mainly funk, rock, blues, dico, jazz and latin. Currently i own 3 basses. My main - Ibanez GWB1005, 2nd - Fender Jaco artist, 3rd. D'alessandro 5 string defretted hand made.

  13. On right hand technique is good when You can play, let's say' - Donna Lee at a high speed. For all is good when You can develope interisting grooves and make them sound nice on different chords. The 3rd. is that that You create a good relationship with Your drummer and both of You feel the future together.
