Has anyone here as an adult that can already play the Bass to an alright band-playing level decided to do learning and exams for Bass Grades and thought it was worthwhile?

I don't need the certificates for what I do or what I aspire to do but I think the pressure of deadlines for exams and formal learning might help push me out of my comfort zone and improve my overall Bass playing faster than the informal way I do it - I play in two bands and learn the songs and can play the music competently, but the music is similar genres and there's no need to read music (but I can read music, slowly),  I sometimes fall into a 'that'll do' attitude and perhaps I need a formally structured kick up the ar$e!

Just listen to what other plays !

  2. I love vintage Fenders. I have 2003 made Jaco artist jazz bass. I momentaly made it look vintage, refinished it black and road worn. I called it "red rain". I can't call it yet a vintage Fender, but maybe some 10 years.

    At the moment:

    fretted 4 - phenolic resin

fretless 4 - blackwood (Mad Inter)

    fretted 5 - chakte kok

    fretless 5 - rosewood

    EUB 5 - ebony

This clearly shows that my favourite is black.

Just a moment, i have never heard of chakte kok. What's so special in it ?

Richlite - looks like ebony, feels like ebony, not affected by seasonal heat & humidity changes.

Ebonol also feels and looks like ebony. Gary Willis in some instagram chat said that he prefers to play gwb1005 with ebonol fingerboard.

  5. If i would be richer, i would shurely pay +/- 5000e for the bass of doom. Though, i got my dream bass - Ibanez GWB1005 which i use mostly, i would put BOD to the wall and put a picture of Jaco up to it. Together it would be a nice painting for the room.

  6. Long, long time ago I had a big gig at some festival on half open stage, and the wind was there. My place on stage was right besides the most popular piano player of our country, 90 years old man, called Maestro. I was playing from the notes and suddenly wind got hard and took a few lists away, i was shocked and run for them to prevent the situation and continue to play. It took about 4 seconds without me and then Maestro turned to me and said - "how can it happen ???". I was in bad mood that day.

And does '...because of what it had to experience with it is owner.' make sense..? I think not, and would use '...because of what it had to experience with its owner.' OK it's pedantic, I know, and is of no consequence in the Great Scheme Of Things, but it's so easy to avoid tiny errors of the sort. Hope this helps. B|
Carry on; you're doing fine. :friends:

So where was my mistake in english ?

The majority of the Basschatters on here are men of a certain age (between 45 and 65). They wake up grumpy and go to bed grumpy and then wake up two, or three times in the night for a pee, and are grumpy then as well.

So feel free to ignore their attempts at humour 😊

I only respond with my humour, he started.

Simply for educative purposes, knowing that English is not your first language...

There is a simple test for 'it's' v 'its'. Can it be replaced with 'it is' and still make sense..? If so, it's 'it's', otherwise it's 'its'. :friends:

As "it's" - I meant the bass guitar.

Nothing to do with the sound it makes, everything to do with the Tolkeinesque effect on its owner's fate

That name to that bass is given because of what it had to experience with it's owner.

    Interesting....or maybe interested...

Given the initial snide remarks, I am just wondering,Nilorius, whether the english you are using to contribute on here is your first language?

No, i only learned the english at school.

There have been threads about fretless basses in rock/metal, what is it about the sound of this one that makes you think it's not suitable?

It can't attack very hard on low frequincies and is built to play very light, no super agressive sound can it take, which i suppose is needed in hard rock and metal.
