I had the bigger version of this in my joinery shop, it’s now in a smaller workshop, the trough down the middle is very useful for tools n stuff while leaving a flat work surface, you can cover it all with a sheet of ply if you need a complete flat surface to work, the double vice’s are a must , I’ll get a pic next week when I’m back 🙂
Even that one’s a whopper! Yes please a pic of his bigger brother would be cool to see.- 1

Thanks both. Speaking of length I am starting to worry about clutter a bit now if I go too big - I was thinking if I go long I’d have space for a bench drill etc. BUT I also want a vice at either end, so that wouldn’t really work. Maybe going slightly smaller and leaving space for an extra table for that sort of thing might be better 🤔

Workbenches in my garage have always been X-kitchen Cabinets... so cabinet height 800-850 and 600-650 depth.
Length 1400-1800 or what covers 2 cabinets or a large and a small with a bit oc stool / feet under room, or whatever the long bit of worktop i can find is...
Just keep ya eyes open for someone local having a kitchen done in the new year...
Interesting, what a good idea. Provides storage too! Also further confirms the height I was thinking. Had a proper look in my workshop today and I can’t go higher than that because my sockets are around 90cm off the floor and I want them to be just above the bench. 2ft depth feels about right too so reaching them won’t be too much of a stretch. Just need to decide how long I want to go now 😬- 1

Ben made one, might be helpful.
Cheers - I love Ben’s vids, I will certainly be checking that one out later today! -

The following from BD’s newsletter suggests improvements are imminent -
We have a brand new website coming in the next few weeks that will make searching and purchasing goods much easier and we will be adding more helpful content to guide you through the buying process for all items we sell plus useful tips and advise (sic).
I am weirdly excited by this, does that make me a saddo? 😂In any case, I agree with the view that the current website isn’t great. However, I’ve found that their responsiveness via email and access to niche items you can’t really get anywhere else more than makes up for that.

The main reason given for not going too deep is that you can put things at the back without leaning over much.
Of course, if you have the physique of an Orangutan that may not be much of a consideration.
I do look a bit like an Orangutan, not sure if I have the reach to match though 😂 Think I’ll have to do a few mock exercises like measuring my wrist height from the floor and how far I can stretch across a surface before I decide.- 1

Actually, you can't really make a bench too long, but you can make it too wide. Check out Rex Kruger on YT, one video about four common mistakes made when building your first bench and one about building an English Joiners bench.
I'm going to build one of his in the new year, it's going to be 1500mm long, 600 deep and about 850 tall. For context my current bench is 2m x 1m and I'm only using a square about 600 x 700 to work on. The rest has become stuff storage.
Thanks both, those measurements are about the ballpark I was thinking then! I'm considering going quite wide (8ft or so) as I have the space to do so and would quite like an area for toolboxes and other storage at one end. I suppose the depth is the biggest question, 600mm sounds like the 'standard', but again I can go deeper if needs be, maybe up to 750mm or so. I'm assuming here that bigger = better if I have the space but equally I don't want to end up building something that's so big I can't reach across it 😂
I'll also give Rex's vids a proper watch 👍

I’ve been enrolled in a guitar luthiery course for a couple of years (first two bass builds imminent, separate threads to follow!) and to speed up my progress I’ve recently had a workshop built in my garden so I can tinker at home in between classes. Next step is to build my workbench. A bit of research suggests that a 3ft height and 2ft depth are about ‘standard’, is anyone able to tell me whether those dimensions would be suitable for bass building, or do other heights/depths work better?
I have the space to be flexible and because I’m building it myself can go for custom dimensions if more suitable.
Will update with pics here once the build gets underway 🙂
Cheers!

I use P2G a lot and I’ve always found them to be pretty cheap/competitive - that tends to be for smaller/medium size parcels though. Larger stuff may be pricier and as others have said I suspect Christmas is pushing the prices up right now.

I thought this thread was going to be about the very talented lady from Skunk Anansie. I'm going to give these guys a listen now though, cheers!

Seriously good basses these, and ridiculously cheap for what they are. I can see prices going up once people realise the quality on offer here, GLWTS.

Depends what level/difficulty you’re looking at. Holiday by Green Day is a good beginner track.

That’s an interesting one, I’d never considered active speakers before. I shall have to investigate further, thanks. -

Tech21 make the VT based 500w just for you.
Ah the VT 500w looks awesome but it seems as though it’s discontinued! Plus I’m not sure how I’d get the backing tracks to play through it. Certainly solves the Sansamp/power amp into a single unit conundrum though! -
I really like the sound of my passive basses running into a Sansamp, so have no real use for the preamp on a standard amp head when using a cab. I could run it into a power amp, but I also like practicing at home to backing tracks and headphones...which means I'd need an aux and headphone input.
I know I can just get a standard amp head and go through the effects return, but was wondering if such an amp exists that will cover all the bases above in a single unit? I.e. something similar to a power amp that has an aux and headphone input.
Close examples are the GR Pure Amp or Quilter Bass Block, but the former has no aux or headphone input and the latter no aux.
Does anyone know if such an amp exists?

Lovely 👍, and a nice tort, some of them I find a bit too bright
Indeed, this one is a bit on the darker side, I like how it's slightly understated.

Really pleased that you're happy with it and that you've completed the set. If I ever see a roadworn looking sunburst stingray, I'll give you a shout! 😂
Haha, why not - then I'll have the 'holy trinity'! 😂 Thanks again matey.

Picked this up just before the weekend - all credit however has to go to the legend that is @Jonesy for pointing me in its direction!
I recently acquired a Road Worn P in a trade and having been very impressed by it was on the hunt for a Road Worn Jazz to match. I'd been keeping an eye out for a number of months but had never managed to find one in sunburst...until now!
Anyone familiar with these basses will know what they're all about - arguably some of the best models to ever come out of the Mexican factory. The neck on this is excellent, super smooth and quick. The single coil pickups provide a lot of grunt, but backing off the front pup gets it close to that Jaco-esque tone.
I still want to spend a bit more time with it before waxing too lyrical, but suffice to say first impressions are very good indeed.
A few pics below, including next to her new sister
Also tagging @la bam who I believe likes a good Road Worn.

These polls are nonsense. How can he be number 1 in 2021, but it be based on stuff he’s done over 40 years??
Quite. Lee Sklar and Alex Webster are great players who have been ‘doing the rounds’ for years too, what is it about their 2021 activities that make them stand out now?
These things are so subjective as to be almost meaningless. Best thing is to take them as a little bit of fun and not much more.
(‘Fun’ also being subjective 😂)

And one Passion Series II at a low price in Germany : https://www.bassic.de/kleinanzeigen/vigier-passion-2.24210/
Oof that is cheap. Might even be worth the additional VAT/duty. -
I have 6 in ‘active service’ and another 3 in storage as they were my beginners basses when I was a teenager.
I constantly feel like I should thin the herd but inevitably end up adding to it. Current GAS is for a two-tone sunburst jazz relic to go with my road worn P.

I’ve always loved that upper horn shape on these basses, very distinctive!

Really surprised they’re closing the paint shop as it was pretty legendary and a major source of their work I thought.
I have a super quad in a build I’m doing myself that’s nearly finished, can’t wait to try it.
