  1. Actually, I'm kinda with you. However, I see conversations all the time (not on THIS site, of course..:)...), that suggest that many bassist can hear the tiniest of differences. Just wondering how they do that....

For the record...this was my MPV5, 50/50 on the pickups, Flat on the tone, light gauge Elixer Nanoweb nickel rounds, played over the 24th fret: Trace GP12SMX/400SMX set "seagull" EQ, no pre-shape and the bass compression at 50% 60/40 tube preamp. 4x10 cabinet.

  2.  Okay...I thought this might be fun. Use 30ish seconds of a tune from a gig or rehearsal, and we will guess what rig you are using....bass, amp, cabinet, effects (if any). Winners get to sit smugly on their throne of acoustic excellence...:)

Me first...this is from a rehearsal last night with a country band I am depping for later in the month. I'll give the solution when it seems appropriate...enjoy!

It's meant to be a general point. You will have prioritised other things in your life. We all do that. My point is that we often resign ourselves to playing the best that we can, but don't appreciate how a little extra, done frequently will lead to big improvements over time.

Frequently we are saying, I do enough to get by, or I do what I can with the time available, I'll never be a great player. That's great, but I suspect in a great number of cases, if we are truthful, it's not quite true. If you really want to improve, then you will find the time.

Okay...agreed. This is why I have a "5 minute rule". I have a bass easily accessible both at work and at home. If I have 5 minutes or so, I'll pick it up and do some mindful practicing...usually turns into 20 minutes of good work. This has cleaned up my playing a lot. I'm a person who used to play about 4 hours a day but won't ever do that again. My method works for me to help keep some kind of edge.

Not one bass player on this forum is not better now than they were when they started.

At some point they make a decision not to do any work to get better.

I think that’s a little harsh. My growth as a player has always been due to circumstances, not due to some drive to improve for improvement sake. I feel okay as a musician either way.

  5.  I also want to thank you for this brilliant review. I bought the same rig about 2 months ago, and am falling in love with it. When in the States, I used to play through a MusicMan head that also had a valve preamp section, and this often reminds me of that rig, although this one seems a lot more versatile. If I want 80's (or a good jazz sound), I'll use my Pedulla 5'er. For more modern stuff, it's a Yamaha active bass. The amp responds to both (although quite differently) beautifully. Well worth hauling the extra heft around, IMO.

Well done on a very useful review!

  6. I have a different background because I hold a music degree, started out in jazz, but like to play all kinds of music. Always loved country music as that’s what I grew up listening to, but also classic rock. I still enjoy playing jazz, latin and funk but don’t slap. I really don’t enjoy real book based jam sessions. I do like pit work, but haven’t done it for a while. Guess I’m an educated hick at heart.

I’ve also done this all my life. There was a rumour circulated years ago that it could put 9v through your brain and kill you, but it was debunked pretty quickly. So, what’s the issue do you think?

Stings a bit sometimes, I guess

No-one consuming their basic needs for living is a 'parasite'. Anyone taking more from the World 'pot' is a parasite, as it inevitably comes to the detriment of all the others. It's this huge disparity across the Planet that is the cause of so much misery. It could (and should...) be much better for all, not just the 'parasites'. :rWNVV2D:

Please let me know where in the history of this word this has actually not lead to the suffering and death of millions of people?

Well, it's part of a whole philosophy which includes a Universal Wage, paid to everyone, with a fixed, universal rate per hour, worldwide. An hourly rate means that, for an eight-hour day, one would get eight hours of 'wage'. For some jobs, 'on call' hours would be paid. For some other jobs, 24/7 hours would be paid. This would ensure that no-one, no-one at all, would be paid more than the number of hours in the week. There would be a fixed 'minimum' wage for those not 'employed', paid to everyone. 'Working' would be on top of that. A diamond miner in South Africa would get the same rate as a sheep farmer in Wales and the president of France. We all, on the Planet, have the same basic needs, and I see no reason why some 'need' more than others. There's a few details to work on, but that's the general idea. Will it get voted in..? Not in France, the US of A nor the UK, I don't suppose, but might be popular in much of the World. One day, maybe... :rWNVV2D:

  10. I have always played in some sort of covers band...always good fun and often also really good music being made. I notice the jazz folks are not jumping in here. Most jazz gigs are cover gigs, and they seem to do okay. I remember once when visiting in Vermont (my wife's territory) we went to an event with live music. A emo (shoegaze?) band called "And The Mountain Cried No" was up doing the most miserable, dire original music I think I've ever heard. Not for me....:)
