2. Thanks for the replies I've just ordered one from Guitar Parts Resource and can get M8 threaded inserts on ebay easily enough Cheers Richard
3. I am just finishing off a EB3 style bass build and I am thinking of buying a Hipshot Supertone bridge from the US as in the UK it seems one would cost me £125 I can get one for around £70 from Guitar parts Resource including delivery. How much duty would be payable on this? I presume VAT at 20% Import duty? Customs charge? Also where in the uk can I buy the threaded inserts for fitting to the body ? Or would it be possible to fix the bridge with large stainless self tapping screws? Thanks Richard
4.
Thanks for those suggestions...I'm not sure on the pickup dimensions but I'll look into that. Thank you...
Have a look at a DiMarzio "hot" Firebird mini humbucker DP198 http://www.axiomatic-music.co.uk/cgi-bin/s...tml%23a241#a241

6. Don't suppose these happen to be short scale strings? Cheers Richard
7. Anybody use La Bella Deep Talkin flats on a short scale? What are they like?
8. I take on board whats been said however my Mustang must have cut down long scale (34") strings on it as the E string is .100" diameter and it is wound round the tuner a few turns. If I can get a second hand set of 324 med scale I will try them on it but like you say its probably not worth risking a brand new set Are there any short scale flatwound strings that are similar to Thomastik Jazz Flats in tone and feel ? Thing is I really like them on my Mustang and would really like them on my EB3 Chees Richard
9. Thanks Dave I did think it was a bit dodgy cutting down long scale ones I have seen the strings on stringsdirect but would prefer a second hand set and as I don't need a set for a week or two I thought it was worth trying on the forum first. So it looks like I'm after a set of Thomastik JF 324 Jazz Flats strings if I can get some secondhand. I've placed an Ad in the Wanted section Cheers Richard
10. Is it ok to shorten a set of 34" bass strings to fit them on a short (30") EB3 type bass? I'm after a 2nd hand set of TI JF324 Jazz flats 43-106 and most of the sets that I've seen on sale are JF344 ones 43-100. I've looked on the Thomastik website and the AD and G strings are the same diameter as the JF344's just the E string is a little thinner than the short scale one . Also I've just measured the TI Jazz Flats on my Fender Mustang and the E string is JF344 thickness (.100") I presume thats because the strings go throught the body on a Mustang? Thanks Richard PS If anyone does have a spare set of these strings please let me know. Thanks

12. I've bitten the bullet and ordered a Dimarzio Model One and a Dimarzio Hot Minihumbucker and I'm going to get a Les Paul wiring harness (2 vol 2 tone 3 way swtich for the wiring. Thanks for all your help Cheers Richard
13. How can I tell what they should be ? The loom I'm looking at is a Gibson/Epiphone Les Paul Wiring Harness with 2 Volumes + 2 Tones + 3 Way Toggle + 1/4" Output Jack it has Alpha(JS) Pro 500k Pots. Thing is I don't want to make up my own loom I'd want to buy one ready made as electronics and soldering are not something I'm confident in I'm likely to buy a DiMarzio Model One for neck pickup and have had suggested a DiMarzio hot DP198 mini humbucker http://www.dimarzio.com/site/#/pickups/ but its not listed as a bass pickup. Will this be ok? Cheers Richard
14. Hi I am currently building an EB3 type bass and was wondering if it would be ok to use a Les Paul wiring harness (2 vol 2 tone and 3 way switch) connected to the 2 pickups ? Also if anyone has any Epiphone humbucker and mini humbucker pickups they've removed from an Epiphone EB3 that they would like to sell please let me know. I have also been looking at other pickups I could use. Neck pickups: EMG Select (bit smaller than original size neck pickup though) about £28 DiMarzio Will Power [DP145] £70 DiMarzio Model One (DP120) £72 Bridge pickups: Epiphone viola bass neck pickup £36 If anyone has any of these I would welcome comments Also any other recommendations Thanks Richard
15. I posted on vintageguitars.org.uk forum as suggested and have now got the measurements I needed Cheers Richard
16. Thanks have just posted message on there too. Also can anyone confirm the headstock angle ? 13 deg ? 16 deg ? And neck width at 20th fret Cheers Richard
17. Could anyone with an EB0/EB3 bass please measure their headstock in the places shown in the pic below for me I am about to start building a EB3 style bass and although I can find loads of pictures cannot find sizes anywhere Thanks alot Richard
18. Hi Stuart Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a go with the rubbing compound as you suggest.I suppose I can always go back to the wet and dry stage if the compound doesn't do the job. I'm going to try and get some 3m Imperial Hand Glaze for the polishing stage Cheers Richard
19. Hi Its had 1 tin of clear satin nitrocellulose, 1 tin of light tint gloss nitro and 1 tin of clear gloss nitro. Which was about 4 or 5 coats of each. Theres very little orange peel at all with front and back nice and glossy just a little overspray on some of the edges
20. I have just finished spraying my (previously refinished)1976 ash fender mustang bass with clear and tinted lacquers and its come out very nicely. I am now waiting for it to harden of before flatting and polishing. I intend leaving it for 3 weeks and then using wet and dry grades 600# 800# 1000# 1200# 1500# and 2000# Then Rubbing compound. My question is what sort of wax should I use to polish it? I was going to use beeswax furniture polish but I recieved the following reply on a previous post Quote: "use a glaze to finish. Using a wax or polish at the last stage traps the natural gassing process and could cloud your finish. Some say wait 90 days before using a wax or polish" So will wax be ok to use? What is glaze? And more importantly what do you recommend me to use? Can car polish be used? Also do I NEED to wet and dry it could I just use the rubbing compound? Thanks a lot Richard
21. Hi Stuart I finished spraying the nitro today and now plan to leave it for 3 weeks to harden. I have read that I should flatten with wet and dry 800# then progress up to 1200# then rubbing compound then wax. The finish is pretty good at the moment very shiny and very little "orange peel" From what you've written would I get away without the wet and dry? just using rubbing compound instead. Also what do you mean by a "glaze" ? Should I not use wax then? I've never refinished a guitar before so this is all new to me Cheers Richard
At the painting stage, avoid using silicone full stop.Once the paint has cured, flatten the finish using your chosen compound, then step down to a finer finishing compound, then use a glaze to finish. Using a wax or polish at the last stage traps the natural gassing process and could cloud your finish. Some say wait 90 days before using a wax or polish. Kind regards Stuart
22.
It soaks into the wood and lifts off other finishes, its bad news in car spray shops also. silicone contamination can screw them right up.
How can it soak into the wood if its got over 10 coats of nitrocellulose?
23. Hi I've just refinished my bass with Nitrocellulose and am now waiting a few weeks for it to harden off before flatting and polishing. I've seen it mentioned to avoid wax polish containing silicon. Why is this? I was considering using Turtle Wax Original Super Hard Shell but this has silicones in it. How come its ok for car use but not guitars when the car may have been finished in cellulose paint? Thanks Richard
24.
In one way, I'm very relieved to hear this. In another, I'm sorry - the quest goes on. I'll keep looking (in fact, I was looking whilst the bass was in my ownership but didn't find anything). I hope everything else is going well - it's a fantastic player!
Yes still looking. I'm very pleased with it though plays very nice. I love the TI jazz flats
25. I just emailed an Ebay seller in the US who sells pickguards for US and CIJ Mustangs. He states they are not interchangeable. Anyway I emailed him to see what the actual difference was. The difference is that old Mustangs have smaller pickups! Puzzle solved!! Anyway I now need a pair of older U.S. Mustang bass plastic pickup covers if anyone has any available I would be most grateful.
