    We recorded this at Big Tone Recordings in Manchester, can't recommend it highly enough, Tim looked after us good and proper.

    +1, mine has got to be high enough so the wrist on my fretting hand can stay quite straight.

    +1 I use it to thicken (not sure if thats the right world) higher notes, not much use on lower frets.

  4. mmm nothing that odd-

    Bass, 2 instrument cables, picks, ear plugs, tuner, spare strings, gaffer tape, pen & paper, spare batteries for bass and tuner, multitool, kettle lead.

    hopefully enough that I don't get caught out but not so much that it becomes a chore to lug it about.

  5. Thanks guys, this will be my first time recording in a studio so I'm not all that sure what to expect. I've got my parts well practiced and the band is pretty tight so hopefully I'll get my parts down in 2 or 3 takes.

    Anything else I should be aware of going in? all advice, good/bad experiences welcome.

    Yeah you're probably right, won't be playing all that much I guess. Might try the superglue or electrical tape if necessary.

    Ha, if our drummer was allowed to solo, each song would easily reach 3 hours, will have to keep an eye on him.

  7. Evening all,

    I'm about to go into the studio for a week of 12 hour days recording my new band's first EP. I've got calluses that happily see me through our 4 hour rehearsals but am thinking that they might not be enough for the longer days?

    Does anyone who has experience of longer and repeated sessions have any advice on dealing with this? Is there something that i can put on my fingers to help them recover at the end of a days work?

I tend to stick to the drummers right (ride side). partly to be further away from the snare to avoid deafening and partly because one of our guitarists wants to play from the drummers left. seems to work OK. Played on the other side recently for practical reasons and couldn't hear vocals or guitars over our drummers massive sound despite monitoring. When I start playing with a quieter drummer I might switch. Until then, I'm protecting my ears and trying to hear the whole mix.

  9. Not great Saturday night. Played the third gig with my originals band at the Cardigan Arms in Leeds. Sound was apparently ok out front but the sound guy seemed to have forgotten our monitoring settings so I couldn't hear any bass at all, couldn't hear any of my vocals (backing) either so they were probably a bit dire, asked for both to be boosted but to no result.

    anyway, rest of the band sounded pretty good, drums sounded like a volcano erupting behind me (in a good way) and guitars weren't too distorted (which can be a problem with 2 guitarists who love their effects), lead vocals sounded good.

    Unfortunately we didn't go over all that well, we trusted the promoter to put us in a suitable lineup because he'd done it before but he decided to put our pretty intense heavy punk/rock/grunge band in this line up- a blue's duo of vox and acoustic guitar, a solo acoustic troubadour type and a light, melodic, indie pop group. Needless to say the audience that the other acts had brought were not that into us, we got polite applause but not much else, shame.

    The other acts were great, especially the solo guy, and the band plus girlfriends and hangers on (including a guy who has volunteered to do some artwork, which is cool) had a great night with plenty of beer and pool after the bands finished.

    Oh well, have been booked on a more suitable lineup at the cockpit in a few weeks, can't wait.

  10. Sorry for the late reply everyone, I've had major computer problems (i.e. it not working and taking ages to fix). Thanks to everyone for their advice, I appreciate it.

    Played a pub gig on saturday using the EB combo, whacked it on an crate as recommended and put it through the PA from the DI socket, apparently sound out front was good so quite happy with that. So I think I'll hold off on buying an extension for now and carry on with that system. When I do need some extra volume I'll go and audition stuff as advised but thinking towards a 1x15.

    On a separate note has anyone ever sound checked and been really happy with the monitor levels and then during the actual gig had the monitoring sound really different? Is this just a rubbish sound tech or something else? any thoughts?

    yep pronounce it like the dog. My guitarist says its dutch :)

  12. Hi everyone,

    a newbie on basschat and looking for some advice on combo extensions. I play through an Ashdown eb12-180 combo and love the sound of it but the band I'm playing with are getting some bigger gigs now and I need some more volume. I hate relying on using house gear or borrowing from other bands. On the other hand I don't have the cash to spash out on a whole new rig all at once.

    So, I'm thinking of getting a 2x10 extension cabinet for now when I've got extra cash buy a separate head and a 1x15 cabinet and ditching the combo. Trouble is I'm not sure how to match cabinets to heads/combos and am a bit confused by impedance calculations.

    Does anyone have any suggestions for good quality, cheap, light 2x10s? And any advice on matching equipment?

    I'm Rob, living in Leeds at the moment but from Leicestershire originally (Melton Mowbray pork pie anyone?). Play in a punk/grunge type band called Lasse Brawn, just starting to gig.

    Current gigging gear is a Schecter C4 Diamond series straight through an Ashdown EB12-180 combo or whatever else is around, thinking about an extension cabinet though.

    so err yeah, hi...
