  1. I don't have many at the moment to be honest, but I've owned probably 100 in the past, not so many for the last 10 years!

I'll spare you all the guitar photos.

Anyway, my Sandberg that I got from here a long long time ago, my old Conklin GT5 that I asked my parents to pick up from Dallas even longer ago, and my Fender American Vintage 64 Jazz, with the fancy neckplate that has been in its case in a box for probably 3 years!

I have the Conklin for sentimental value really, and I got the Fender after wanting another American one when I got home after touring the factory on holiday, the Sandberg however is the best bass I have ever played.

On the last recording I did I used my Lull PJ5+foam into an Aguilar TH500 into Logic Pro. The project didn't get past the basic tracks but the bass sounded very good.

    Did you DI the head?

    Hi Guys,

I'm very interested in this thread.

I've decided to try and learn Pro Tools.  After installing the free "First" version yesterday I have spent the past two evenings working with a little 1 minute demo recorded by an guitarist I known on his iPhone and turning it into a full mix.

Yesterday I was working with my Sandberg P but I could not get a recorded tone I liked.  The free edition of Pro Tools doesn't let you use 3rd party VSTs so no Amp / Cab aims so my bass track is direct in via the audio interface.

Any tips on getting a great bass sound from a dry DI in without the use of VSTs?  Or should I use some sort of pre-amp for some tone shaping before the AI?

Other option maybe to mic up the amp.

You should try using Cakewalk by the way instead of protools, it's completely free with no limitations.

  4. Bonjourno!  Many years ago, I used to spend lots of time in recording studios - I'd often use a Sansamp bass drive, or mic up my amp (whatever it was at the time etc).

Recently I've started playing a bit again at home, and I'm doing some remote funky stuff with my old band mates down south - I've got a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 that I dug out and I am using Cakewalk, which I am impressed with as it didn't cost me a fortune as Logic did when I had a mac.

Anyway, my basses direct, with some compression added via TH3 sounds okay at the moment - but what do other home recorders use to get their bass down?

I thought maybe a Microbass 2, or just another Sansamp bass driver again?  Anyone tried one of those Sonicakes, I've read good things, but they seem too good to be true for 50 quid?!

My local store have a delivery date of 27th this month for the Strat and Jazz Bass. Honestly can't wait.

I am hoping for sooner, this came from the dude at Peach guitars after he spoke to Fender.

I used to work in a guitar store and (at the time) the Fender American Vintage range instruments used to arrive like this quite regularly.

I have an American Vintage, and it does indeed have a crack like this, haha.

However, the builder should not respond like he has.

  7. Yeah, this is a lesson on how not to do customer service!

A good example for me personally was Sandberg, I got one secondhand and it was missing the dots by the neck, emailed, got a response from the owner and they posted me some out no charge from Germany!

  8. Yeah, I'd say valve amps for bass is of course not as popular as it is with guitars - however, for bass I'd say its more about size.  Smaller amps seem to be replacing the larger ones for bass, whereas for guitar, it's often modellers.

  9. How does everyone feel about this subject?

I think with guitars you can really tell, the likes of Kemper seem to have killed the valve amp market, a secondhand Rectifier etc is now very cheap compared to 10 years ago.  But I would personally rather have that Rectifier.

I've noticed it a bit with bass amps too, obviously SWR are now worth a tiny fraction of what they once were (although they don't exist now), and even what I think are the best amps I've played - EBS are pretty cheap compared to previous years for the full size rackmount ones.  Not sure if bass modelling is really out there on mass in the same way, but the likes of Sansamp have been used by bassists for years in the studio anyway.

    Maybe it's just me though!

You don't need to pay a premium. If a few people on here are ordering then just wait 2 or 3 months and they'll be popping up in the classifieds for two thirds of that price. 😉

I'd put money on them being more than they cost in the first place if they appear for sale!

There was a range of black paisley fenders in 2012 / 2013 iirc. But now I look and see there is a new range.

What kind of crazy talk is that?

Ahh, the black paisley strat and tele?  Don't think there was a bass was there?  And I think they were MIM and not MIJ?

Are they different to the japanese ones that have been out for a long time, or is this a new range?

I love paisley and would love that finish but they are out of the budget I would pay for a fender. Looks great though.

These are Japanese, but they've not hit any stores yet - so not sure which ones you mean to be honest?
