    As I said it’s personal choice, I can tell the difference for sure and for ages I tried to tell myself I couldn’t. Ultimately it’s personal choice, but if work done or power is a function of area under the the output graph it feels like class D are steeper spikes and A/B are more sine waves with greater work done. This may explain the need to lose heat. I’m no expert but I trust my ears.

    No right or wrong just personal preference! 😉

    You also said at volume AKA loud; I tend to agree. At moderate levels [such as A/B test most likely] it may be harder to discern.

    I have accepted well engineered Class D for its overall good sound and light weight for moderate loud [and power for loud gig's] Gig's I have been doing especially now at 67yrs old.

    The loud gig's large clubs with less than stellar tone I can make through without much annoyance but those are few and far between last few years.

    Hi

    Any thoughts on a practice combo amp with a decent headphone output? Looking at spend up to £500. It's for home practice only. Not concerned for recording at the moment. Ideally something with small dimensions.

    I've just seen a fella playing a Markbass CMD 121P that sounded fab. Any other recommendations?

    Markbass CMD 121P does not have headphone out or aux in

    Micromark and Mnimark have both

  3. Used Stingray Special seems obvious based on your post and replies. Patience should find you one under 1800

    G&L L2500 CLF Series are in 9lb+ range [under 10] and don't have ugly head stock😀

    @molantricky one. A gift is something you want to get right. Personally I think the Ray4 is great, and a superb modding frame, but in your shoes I’d probably go for a Ray34. I don’t think that needs any mods at all; only reason I never bought one is my preference for Jazz necks. Only get those on a Ray4 or an SLO Stingray

    The SBMM STINGRAY 24 has Jazz neck also if looking used the older CA versions of Ray34/24 and QM [Quilted] models of Stingray 34 [on headstock not Ray34] [2017-19 I believe] have Jazz neck width also.

    I had for short time The SBMM Stingray34QM with 1.5 nut width;

    Thank you!!

    I ended up going for an Eich T900. I had very good memory of it, I had it a couple years ago and loved how portable it is and super super clear and responsive - this suits me considering I'm using the HX Effects for all the colouring (effects, Ampeg/Sansamp/Darkglass drives...).

    I like Aguilar but had the feeling Eich would always give me a 'blanker' canvas to paint on.

    On that note, I love the look of those royal purple Aguilars but haven't seen even regular 2x12's second hand.... and that's a hurting £1100 cheapest I've found...! I've seen a Barefaced Big Twin II and I'll be going for it.

    It is a 900w behemoth at 4ohm alongside the Eich, but a 'better than FRFR' cab that I can even throw IR's through from the HX Effects - that way I can either colour or not or change my cabs setup or just use it without IR's/cabsims with the Big Twin II... after all it can even be used as a PA with that 30hz-20khz range... and I was offered it second hand which saves me a good pinch, £825 for a £1310 cab with cover.... I can't be more pleased!

    Now I'm just doing maths to see if I can fit it in the boot of the CX-5 comfortably alongside the bass :)

    Best,

    Ander.

    Well thought out sensibility works also🙂

    trying to ignore how bloody cool the Royal Purple SL 212/210 from Aguilar would look with my purple bass.... I really am trying.

    All your possibilities are excellent products but why not get your 2x12 Royal Purple 4 ohm version and AG700 [stable at 2.67 ohms] so you can add another 8 ohm 1x12 if ever needed

    This setup will sound completive to anything you look at similar price and should keep you rocking for years to come.

    PS: If you add the 1x12 to mix you can use it for rehearsal and small club, the 2x12 for medium club and both for large/Festival if for some reason your don't have FOH support😀

  7. 10 Years seems a decent run being used regularly and a value if considering cost per year; It seems through my travels in Bass Forums that 10-12 years for mid priced Class D/AB amps is when some failures start cropping up.

    Getting it repaired may be half +or- of new purchase if money is a concern [if repair holds and no others lying in wait😀]

    Maybe go checkout New Version and see if it sounds as good, better; If so and purchase won't hurt well....

    Fender Deluxe/Elite Precision, J pickup def useable especially on active mode. I find I can get a good Cranberries/Zombie sound from it.

    You can ad Ultra to that list but price range out of line with BB434

    Have not heard new Player Plus [sort of MIM version of Elite/Ultra] but maybe? at about $1100 US if looking New.

     I.e. 4ohm gets the 350w, 8ohm gets the 117w?

    Sorry I’m not an expert on this stuff, I could well be wrong!

     8ohm output is 170 watts on Mini One

    The GR Bass line both amps and cabs have peaked my interest. Looking at Mini One as backup/rehearsal/song learning amp and One 800 as main

    Liked Idea of Pure800 as I am not a EQ fiddler just a touch sometimes;

    I have a 3 band active bass so that would do BUT with the pure switch on One 800 and added features like Tuner and DI Volume along with Semi parametric EQ which may come in handy in bad room it seems the wiser choice;

    [both Mini and 800 have aux in and Headphone out nice for practice and learning songs]

  10. Played that way but with IEM's and Mic at front center facing audience [to hear them when they spoke to us] with original band for a few years.

    Having a CD/Studio quality mix at reasonable level enhanced our performance along with other benefits mentioned.

    A tad pricey though.

    I have the MB Tube 500, the 'tube' inside is a miniature tube soldered directly into the circuit board, there doesn't seem to be any special heatsinking or dispersal measures employed other than the normal fan so I suspect there isn't a lot of heat produced by the tube.. I haven't had the chance to compare it directly with the LMIII though so there may be differences I'm unaware of.  You'll have the chance to see if there are any practical modifications when you take the old amp out.

    Obviously if there are any vents in the casings they need to be unobstructed when fitted in your combo, so if you find any extra venting in the case you will need to ensure airflow through them. I suspect you won't. Why not contact Mark Bass and ask them?

    The vents and fan locations are the same for LMV D2 and Combo Head in amp. Markbass public policy on replacing combo head with different model is 'Don't Recommend" Most likely knowing things may go sideways with DIY'ers

    Thanks guys

    "I find a lot of amps are 'voiced' so I'd like something that is clean to start with, but where you can dial in decent tonal variation with the EQ and bass itself (I have plenty of variety in the latter aspect). "

    lots of Ideas given here but based on above sentence take a listen to Markbass, PJB, Traynor and new Trace Elliot combo's [ or Elf with 2x8]

    As I understand it, the amp in MB12 combos is pretty much identical to the Little Mark head. The spec's are the same. Given that the combo will drive an additional cab', why bother replacing it?

    I am replacing with Little Mark Vintage D2 has tube preamp, footswitchable mute, EQ and boost, parametric mid controls; also is Gold line series build

  14. I have a CMD 121P [+NY121] and would like to put LM Vintage D2 in it.
    This way don't have to sell CMD 121P and buy both head and another NY 121 [Also get benefit of backup amp]

    The LMV D2 is same size as combo head[aka LM III]

    Also does anyone know if you can remove small side tops on combo head with holes for screws [to hold head in and place] and put them on LMV D2; then use LMV D2 top on combo head or are modifications needed to hold LMV in combo and make new top for combo head.
