Many years ago, I bumped into an old school friend who played bass. When he found out that I also played, he insisted on lending me a "Learn to Play Slap Bass" book, despite me not expressing any interest in playing slap. Shortly after that, I ended up moving and lost contact with him. I still have the book and think I only ever tried to play slap once.

I'm aware of a rock band, above average profile, lots of radio play, chart albums, support big names, play big festivals regularly, tour in their own name and can get a few thousand people in a venue. One of them also does ordinary pub gigs as a duo/band, another one has a day job to sustain his new family. I'm sure the others do as well. It's hard work.
I think I know the band you are talking about. I saw Slash playing in the Royal Oak last week and Axl is our local Amazon delivery driver. 😄

By the time your favourite band is playing large arenas, or stadiums, or is high up on the bill at festivals, their best days are long behind them, anyway. If you didn't see them when they were playing small, filthy sweatboxes, you've probably missed the really good stuff already 🙂
I saw Lou Reed not long before he died. I was a bit worried as he had a reputation for tinkering with song arrangements and so on, but he was amazing. Played the whole Berlin album straight with "Satellite..." as an encore. Your favourite artist's best days may be behind them, but just occasionally they will pull off something special and you will want to be able to say you were there.

Not right now, but earlier, on Radio 2, Vernon Kay played a version of "We Will Rock You" as a 12 bar blues, from an old BBC session Queen did. It was quite the difference from the usual version.

You can have cracking musicians, terrific mix etc but the tunes have to be quality and these are all classics. I am not an EJ fan (that might well change) but this is real quality. The guy is 76 years old ffs.
So, what you are saying is well done Bernie Taupin... 😄

I don't like Elton John and his voice is still very "I'm Dill Danding" ( I understood about three words in The beach is Back), but he is putting on a good show for those who like him and the band are great. Guitarist is superb I didn't know Clinton Baptiste could play guitar), as is the bassist. The sound is so much better than GnR and Blondie got.

I thought GnR weren't too bad. It took Axl a while to get his voice warmed up and it started to go again near the end. Rick Astley was great doing the Smiths stuff with Blossoms. If only they had dragged Johnny Marr over to join in. Pretenders sounded fantastic. Did anyone else see the Touareg desert blues band that played? Weird and brilliant.

I'm going to see Stiff Little Fingers in August. Peter Hook and the light are on the bill, as is Mr Matlock. I'm not sure if he'll have his own band or will be playing with someone else.

I haven't tried any of the Sonic basses, but I'm getting one of the Telecasters for my daughter. It's a decent instrument, well put together and plays nicely. I'd imagine the basses are of a similar quality.

I went into a music shop to buy one, once, but got a brain freeze and couldn't remember the word "coiled". I said something along the lines of "Have you got any, umm, spiral leads? You know, the curly ones." Thankfully, the guy knew what I meant, although he did look at me as if I wasn't the full shilling.

Oh wow, that is shocking, we thought we had it bad but what happened to you is unbelievable.
You are absolutely spot on with the singer/guitarist. We were very big U2 fans so lots of reverb on the vocals and delay/echo on the guitar. Great memory you have to remember that. So here are some pictures. They are not great and I hope the mods don't mind me posting them in here.
You aren't wrong about being big U2 fans. The guy in the white shirt, with the ponytail and cross earring is very Joshua Tree-era Bono.

In a previous four-piece band, we once started a regular gig we played monthly as a three piece - drummer, bass (me), & lead guitar/vocalist. After a thundering opening song, the frontman said something along the lines of "You may have noticed there are only three of us onstage tonight rather than the usual four... The next song is dedicated to our late guitarist.." & namechecked the missing band member.
Then we played the second song and after that the frontman said that he'd like to clarify that the aforementioned guitarist wasn't dead he - just hadn't turned up yet.
The missing guitarist evenually arrived in time to join us for the second set after encountering nightmare traffic somewhere or other.
That reminds me of the Siadwell sketch from the TV show "Absolutely" - We lost my Grandad the other day. He's not dead; we just don't know where he is. 😆

Not a one hit wonder as such but i'm in a band who, decades before I joined, had one huge worldwide No:1 hit song back in 1982. There were a few more hit records for a few years till the band broke up. Some years later they reformed, and I was recruited as a session guitarist for a few years then got asked to join the band. A few years after that we parted company amicably, then in 2012 after depping on bass for them on a couple of gigs, i rejoined as their bass player and have been "Passing the Dutchie" with them ever since. We have not had any hits whilst i have been playing with them, though we have released an album which was started during my absence and when I returned I got to play bass on one of the tracks which was recorded at one of our gigs. In fact if memory serves me right it is the only non synth bass track on the album. The track is a cover of "I Shot the Sheriff" and the album is called When Reggae Was King.
Come on @jazzyvee, what was the band? Give us a clue. 🤣😉 (I can remember singing that song as a kid. We all did)

The only person at a gig who loves a drum solo is the drummer.
And maybe, just maybe an audience member who plays the drums. But even then it's like watching your wife having sex with another man.
An explorer is trekking through a jungle. In the distance is the sound of tribal drums. All of a sudden the drums stop. The native guide suddenly looks very worried and agitated and says "Oh no, no, no. Drums stop. Very bad, very bad". The explorer asks "Why is it bad? What happens when the drums stop?". The guide replies "When drums stop, bass solo start"
