1. similar thing happened to me, except it was after we'd done our slot, I was asked if the main band could borrow my amp, sorry I said I've got to go, the main band just had to go through the PA.
So if you decide you don't want to do it just say your cat's ill or something and you've got to go, If anybody lends out gear it should be the last band

  2. all these posts just go to show what a broad church punk has become, but for me, old enough to have been there when punk broke, it's the Ramones that do it for me, fast melodic songs stripped down to the bare essentials, after all they were the first true punk band, weren't they?.

  3.
Inspired by Bilbo, I have nothing but respect for mans love for his music.

So i thought i would share my love Punk, i love the urgency i love the speed i love the way i feel when i hear a bass line played in hyper-speed with a nice palm muted guitar over the top and most of all i love the "this is what i play if you don't like it f*ck off " attitude of it all.

that type of thing is exactly why punk was invented, god is there anything more boring than a bass or drum solo :)

  4.
Without wanting to be the devil on yr shoulder, as opposed to the angel, do it - you know you want to.

Think the humble P Bass has always been popular, but that many people after having tried this bass, these features, that manufacturer etc, come to the realisation that what is special about the P Bass is in fact it`s simplicity, and the way that it just sits in the mix so well. Many other basses sound far better on their own, but in a band context the P Bass just works so well.
+1

  5.
Plenty of Rays in punk!
not the old school variety, the ray's just sounds too polite, the P fills the sound out better especailly when there's only one guitarist, to my ears anyway, each to their own as they say.

  6.
It doesn't really matter since you can never hear the bass player anyway. Just get a cheap one.

Unless you want a special-sounding bass for doing YouTube play-a-long videos.
If you buy a cheap bass no one will hear you cause they don't cut through in a band situation

  7. once read a interview with J J and he said he'd tried hundreds of P's and never got the sound he got with the green one he broke in half, and I don't think he ever has got the sound he got on the first 3 Stranglers albums, so it was a fluke IMO the green P had a flaw in it that made it sound like that and that's probably the reason it broke in half!

  8.
The formula is (impedance of cab 1 X impedance of cab 2) / (impedance of cab 1 + impedance of cab 2).

    So, 2.667 ohms (roughly).

With cabs that are the same impedance, you'd use the following: impedance of single cab / number of cabs = total impedance

So, for instance if you had 3 x 16 ohm cabs (why on earth you would is another matter) you'd get 5.3 ohms (roughly).
Thanks

  9.
And if you ever play with a plectrum, the coating gets worn and frayed pretty quickly.
It does, but it doesn't seem to effect the sound, all the gunge that the coating keeps out comes from the fingers not the pick

  10. the only pedal I use is a Zoom 506II, I use it to add a touch of distortion all the time, it's got a built in tuner and I get a resonable over distorted sound for Ace of Spades, not everyones cup of tea but it floats my boat
