By my back-of-fag-packet calcs you'd have to be getting at least £312 per person per gig to make it worthwhile it being your only job (assuming equivalent to 37.5h/wk job @ nat min wage of £10.42 = equivalent annual salary of £20,280, divided by 65). I'm sure there's a lot more to it than this but on the face of it it doesn't sound a particularly attractive prospect from a financial point of view.
Being in a band never does. 😂

Does playing in a tribute band pay well? I appreciate it’s a bit of vague question with variables.
I was wondering the same as the add says that while you can work around it you have to commit to it as your primary job (or words to that effect) and there's about 65 gigs a year.
They'd have to be really well paid gigs.

How do you feel about meeting half way for a sale?
I'm thinking maybe around Vienna. 😂

Nice one. Sounds like you struck gold there.
£30 an hour is a good price for face to face lessons. I was paying that to my so called teacher 15 years ago.

Wow!
I'd take your arm off at that price if I was in the UK.

Actually, I'm kinda with you. However, I see conversations all the time (not on THIS site, of course..:)...), that suggest that many bassist can hear the tiniest of differences. Just wondering how they do that....
I have no doubt that some people can. Probably those who have years of experience playing through different rigs, or sound engineers who can pick up on the most subtle differences.
I'm definitely not one of them. 😆

I honestly don't know how anyone hears the difference. Bass is bass. Especially in a mix. I can't even tell the difference between different kinds of basses in a blind listen.

Pedant hat on: Watts *does* translate to loudness. It's just that Trace's power rating is a tad more conservative than that of Brand X, which usually has as much do do with the marketing department than the engineers.
Pedant hat off: he's right though, treat power ratings with scepticism and bear in mind that 200W is only 3dB louder than 100.
Ok. Pedant Harry doffed in return.
Watts are an electrical measurement where you multiply the current with the voltage to get the power consumed, i.e. watts. It is simply an indicator of power and cannot be used to describe how loud a speaker is actually going to be.

Six year old post.
I think he's probably figured out our by now. 😋

Just had a first listen through of the Bjork album so here's my thoughts.
Firstly. I had no idea that it was an acapella album.
Second. I always thought I liked acapella music. Turns out I like acapella tracks, singular. The odd track here and there is very clever and a nice change. A whole album of it becomes tedious very quickly.
Thirdly. I do really like Bjorks voice and quirky vocal style. So although this album isn't really for me. It does inspire me to seek out more of her stuff. Maybe some of her earlier stuff where I know one or two tracks on the album to dip my toe in.
However. In the spirit of the thread. I will listen to the album again and see if I can pull some more positives from it.

Seriously now, it honestly makes zero difference what a shim is made of. I've shimmed basses a few times (before I knew how to set up a bass properly) and have used a playing card, breakfast cereal box, perspex, old credit card etc.
There's this perceived thing about sustain. Let's address this first. How long do you let your notes ring out for? Ten seconds? 20? For the love of god, forget about sustain. I have no idea what music you play, but if you're doing anything where your tempo is less than say two beats a minute, you're not going to notice anything, if at all.
Tone. Ack. Are you a solo bass player, treading the boards alone? Probably not. Any (perceived) change of tone from your choice of shim material will be net zero; you'll want to hear something and will convince yourself things are different, but they won't be. If you're in a band, any (perceived) nuances in tone will be lost completely. If you're playing live, seriously, nobody in the audience cares about your hardwood shim or whether you're apparently getting more whump/ponk/whatever.
Hurray for common sense! 👏

Bjork will certainly generate some interesting views. I know this album so will hold off commenting for a bit!
Yeah the stuff I've previously heard of hers is as mad as a box of frogs, but in a good way. I don't know why I've never really listened to any of her albums before.
Maybe I'll find out after I've listened to this one. 😂

Ok folks. I'm posting early this week because I don't know if I'll get the chance later.
So here we go.
🥁
Bjork - Medulla.
Interesting one this. I've heard a couple of Bjorks pop hits on the radio and music television back in the day. But I've never listened to an album. So I'm assuming everything on here will be new to me.

The Corabi album is the best thing they did by a long, long way. It's a banger.
The ultimate Crue album will always be Dr Feelgood for me.

I was thinking how I would describe it, then I read Upside Downers post, exactly Jingly Jangly but not in a good way like the Birds.
The vocals were pretty average, no real stand out features.
IMO, the first track on an album should be one of the strongest and grab your attention from the off, unfortunately this one failed with me.
Yes. I agree.
As I said earlier in the thread. I think the opening track was a really bad choice.
It sounds off key and really not quite right. After a few listens I'm pretty sure this was an artistic choice rather than a pink torpedo up. But I really think they should have gone with another track as an opener.

Fair play to those still doing it in their 70's.

Really like this Mike.
Gorgeous bass tone, and the dynamic between the bass, electric and acoustic guitar is marvelous.
Everything sits really nicely in the mix without being too showboaty (is that even a word?)
Also some great and meaningful lyrics in there that I've only just begun to pick up in the first listen. Especially in the titular track.
A really easy and pleasant listen.
Well done! 👍👌
Added to my playlist on Tidal.
Highly recommended chilled out album with a great relaxing vibe. I could listen to this all day.
