I was wondering the same as the add says that while you can work around it you have to commit to it as your primary job (or words to that effect) and there's about 65 gigs a year. 

They'd have to be really well paid gigs.

I have no doubt that some people can. Probably those who have years of experience playing through different rigs, or sound engineers who can pick up on the most subtle differences.

I honestly don't know how anyone hears the difference. Bass is bass. Especially in a mix. I can't even tell the difference between different kinds of basses in a blind listen.

Pedant hat off: he's right though, treat power ratings with scepticism and bear in mind that 200W is only 3dB louder than 100.

Watts are an electrical measurement where you multiply the current with the voltage to get the power consumed, i.e. watts. It is simply an indicator of power and cannot be used to describe how loud a speaker is actually going to be.

Just had a first listen through of the Bjork album so here's my thoughts. 

Firstly. I had no idea that it was an acapella album. 

Second. I always thought I liked acapella music. Turns out I like acapella tracks, singular. The odd track here and there is very clever and a nice change. A whole album of it becomes tedious very quickly. 

Thirdly. I do really like Bjorks voice and quirky vocal style. So although this album isn't really for me. It does inspire me to seek out more of her stuff. Maybe some of her earlier stuff where I know one or two tracks on the album to dip my toe in. 

However. In the spirit of the thread. I will listen to the album again and see if I can pull some more positives from it.

There's this perceived thing about sustain.  Let's address this first.  How long do you let your notes ring out for?  Ten seconds?  20?  For the love of god, forget about sustain.  I have no idea what music you play, but if you're doing anything where your tempo is less than say two beats a minute, you're not going to notice anything, if at all.  

 

Tone.  Ack.  Are you a solo bass player, treading the boards alone?  Probably not.  Any (perceived) change of tone from your choice of shim material will be net zero; you'll want to hear something and will convince yourself things are different, but they won't be.  If you're in a band, any (perceived) nuances in tone will be lost completely.  If you're playing live, seriously, nobody in the audience cares about your hardwood shim or whether you're apparently getting more whump/ponk/whatever.

Yeah the stuff I've previously heard of hers is as mad as a box of frogs, but in a good way. I don't know why I've never really listened to any of her albums before.

As I said earlier in the thread. I think the opening track was a really bad choice. 

It sounds off key and really not quite right. After a few listens I'm pretty sure this was an artistic choice rather than a pink torpedo up. But I really think they should have gone with another track as an opener. 

I really like that idea. 

I will offer you five pounds for ninety five percent of your company. 

I have enough trouble trying to find motivation to walk to the car with my gear. 

Look forward to the album.

Really like this Mike. 

Gorgeous bass tone, and the dynamic between the bass, electric and acoustic guitar is marvelous. 

Everything sits really nicely in the mix without being too showboaty (is that even a word?) 

Also some great and meaningful lyrics in there that I've only just begun to pick up in the first listen. Especially in the titular track. 

A really easy and pleasant listen.
