    Check out the Handbox R-400.

It doesn't have a million buttons for EQ-shaping, but the core tone is so rich, you don't have to do loads with it.

So I'm quite taken with these amps after fully reading your thread and watching a number of YouTube clips.  It doesn't seem like they are producing them at present though - doesn't look like you can order via the website.  I dropped them an email, will see what comes back

Different amps and manufacturers work in different ways. Some will completely bypass the pre amp by plugging into the fx send and return, some will mix, some will bypass the preamp by using the ashdown method, and some, like markbass, can't be bypassed at all.

This is interesting - I'd always assumed FX loops were post Pre-amp; I thought that was the whole point ; i.e. you applied the effect after any shaping - I'm pretty sure that's how it is with my GK head.  Will have to look into the Markbass approach a little more .

That's an interesting amp - have read through a lot of the thread but not had a chance to watch any of the videos yet.

Well imo Markbass amps work very well with Barefaced cabs, but as well as the two listed I`d also check out the Little Marcus, as the frequency settings on the eq seem to fit better with overall tone-shaping, less of a gap between the mids and highs.

I've read this a lot about the little Marcus's but I'm just not sure I can live with the design of them.  I don't want a picture of some dude 😉 on my amp!!

Here's a cat amongst the pigeons...Thought about the Glockenklang Soul?? Delivers what you'll need - great fat sound for that Funky feel while easily covering that rocky sound ...Just about within you budget.

I confess I know very little about Glockenklang's - I'll do some research on them.

  6. I've got GAS for a new amp head - my GK MB500 has been great over the past few years but I'm yearning for a change.  I've sold a number of unused pedals to fund this new desire of mine.   I have a budget of approximately £850-900, pretty generous given I'm your classic weekend warrior.

I'd been pretty set on a Markbass head but, over the past few days I thought I'd see what else is out there and boy there is a lot right now!!
Unfortunately not many places have a broad range of heads in stock and my wife's not going to let me spend weekend after weekend going to guitar shops and playing amps so I need to draw up a bit of a short list.

I'd love some thoughts and recommendations from my Basschat Brethren.

I'm looking for a minimum power: 500w @ 4ohm, class D or hybrid.  I'll be pairing it with a Barefaced Super Compact, 8ohm.  In regards to music, my current band is your typical rock covers band where I play a mixture of finger style and pick.
Personally I want to start playing more funk; my next project will definitely be in that area.  I guess that means I need something quite versatile in regards  to tone shaping.

    Amps I've been looking at:

    • Mark Bass Little Mark III
    • Mark Bass Little Mark Tube
    • Aguilar AG700
    • Ampeg SVT-7Pro
    • Genzler Magellan 800

Any thoughts on the above, or other suggestions for amps I should consider?

    Cheers

    PJ

  7. I've been reading this thread intently as I'm about to order a Hybrid head.

As much as I'd love an all tube amp, class D hybrids are so much more practical and significantly cheaper .  I considered going straight solid state but to my ears the valve preamps add a touch of warmth and body to the tone that I like.

For some unknown reason, I’ve never listened to Vulfpeck until tonight. Love it when I find something new that’s that good.

I only really discovered them a few weeks ago myself - have listened to them every day since.

I'm working on learning a few of their songs - Joe is such a great bass player.

I tried a few types, then gave up and went custom. They cost about the same as a decent pedal so,it’s not a massive investment really and no off the shelf ones will feel close. Once you get some you won’t wamt to go back.

Thanks - I'm make a decision on whether to stick with the current band - i will make the call after rehearsal next time on that.

If I do I'll definitely look into this, for shirt term I'll give one of recommended universal fits ago.

FWIW I have responded to their original response( we always intended to gig with different line-ups) asking for more transparency in future and saying how disappointed I feel with the situation.

I'm curious to hear how the band responded to your message?

Did they play the festivals minus bass, or did they have another player, or were they using an alternative instrument (keys??) - I can't imagine a band playing without any sort of low end ??

  11. Apologies for posting a new topic; I'm sure this has been discussed before but I couldn't find anything relevant when I used the search function.

Just got in from rehearsal and my ears are ringing.  I wore ear plugs all night, some I picked up from Amazon, but clearly they didn't do their job.  Not sure if it's a fit issue or if they are just not very effective ; either way I need to invest in better ones.

In the near future I'd like to get a set of custom fitted plugs, for now I just want a decent set for some protection.

    What do you guys use?

I do think about running an elite courier agency just for the UK, for Basschat sales only.

I’d quit my day job, switch the Volvo to a transit connect...

it’d be dearer but your gear would arrive in one piece.

Man and Van - bass guitar department.

I reckon you wouldn't be short of work shipping all the basschat marketplace transactions..  growing market too, what with guitarchat coming on line!

  13. After reading the many gripes against courier companies and watching those truely awful videos I'm left wondering if it is possible to insure a delivery through a 3rd party organisation or do you have to use the courier's insurance?

Short of ordering hand made items and picking them up directly from the luthier / engineer it seems like a game of roulette having it sent with any of current crop of couriers!

I love the idea of living in York, it suits me better personally, I just don't want to go through moving only to be sans gig in a different place.

I would suggest that unless you need an income from gigging then I would go where your heart is!

I've yet to visit York but I'd imagine it is a reasonable size and I'm sure there will be opportunities there - I've been to Leeds a few times with work and its always struck me as just another city with all the associated hustle and bustle.

  15. I went ahead and ordered a Blade Bravo case from ebay - just shy of £45 with the minimal discount I got through the best offers.  It looks bulky but reviews were good the big front pockets looked useful for my needs.

I also looked into the Fusion bags - I liked the Fuse On concept, but for a full set up you're looking at almost £250 for gig bag and accessories bag.  I shall check out the photography backpacks as a cheap alternative - that is a great idea!!

  16. Selling my Tech21 Bass Fly Rig as I'm no longer using it.

I've subsequently invested in individual Chorus, Fuzz, Octave and Filter pedals so it has become redundant.

The pedal is in great condition and will come with the box and manual etc.  PSU included though please note tit is a dunlop PSU as the original Tech21 one started to come apart.

£180 posted to UK mainland, 2nd class insured delivery.

I have taken a punt based on reviews on the GruvGear Gigblade Sliver... looks to be a slimline version of the GigBlade 2 and it can't be all that bad!

Pricey, but I wanted something good around a ton so I am hoping this fits the bill!

Will feedback when it arrives... thanks all for the comments - very much appreciated.

How are you finding your gigbag - I'm also looking for a gig bag -

I Have few manufacturers bags that came with the guitars I've bought but they are of varying quality. I'm going to store them and have one decent quality bag with good pocket space.  Ideally one I could slip a class D amp head into.

I thought gruv gear gigblade looked good but perhaps short on pocket space.

I just need to get it in and out of the car, I won't be carrying it much so heft and bulk less of a concern that protection and storage.

  18. I'm on the verge of quitting from a band because it is becoming so difficult to organzise rehearsal time.

It's now a struggle to find even a single date in a month - I'm usually quite flexible but I feel I'm having to make endless comprises to fit into the schedules of others.

It's a casual band, I get that but it doesn't feel like it's any sort of priority for some of the others, I've suggested numerous times that we pick a regular rehearsal slot and reorganise if we need to but no one other than the band leader and me want to commit to that so it's endless rounds of doodles to find something.

I should have quit after our last gig in July - i guess I'm avoiding a difficult conversation.

However, I have set up a second band who are much more committed; Mondays work for us all and so every other Monday is our rehearsal sechedule .

Good luck finding a group of people, I know it's not easy especially when your in the 30s/40s.
