No, it is not a good technique and has nothing to do with 'balance'; it is quite inefficient. Try this as a demonstration: Let your hand rest naturally, palm down on your lap - how does it look? Are there any 'saluting' fingers? No, I would suspect that the fingers all have a slight curl to them. This is how your hand feels when it is relaxed. Now stick your little finger up straight - can you immediately feel the tension and a little strain perhaps? With this tension present in the hand and forearm any other movement you are trying to execute will be hindered.

I'm surprised as I find the opposite to be true - i.e. floating thumb gives me consistent sounding notes across all strings as it enables me to pluck each string in exactly the same way, using the exact same part of my fingertip, due to the fact that my hand stays in the same shape. Is the struggle more with the loss of ramp perhaps, so you have begun 'digging in' more?

[/quote] Hey Nige, I think there is another one starting in about a week - there were a few technical issues and flaws in the course material the first time around so hopefully they've sorted those now. For those interested I scored 100%. If you have the time I think it's worth having a look at, though I found I was spending longer on doing the peer assesments than on my own submissions. It threw up some some interesting concepts along the way but the approach did seem biased toward a scalar approach to improvising - which I don't personally favour - but any opportunity to learn how one of the masters operates should never be turned down, particularly when it's free!

The track in question is called Calliope from Al's Scenario album (can't find it on youtube but I think it is on Spotify) - that quote always baffled me a little as there is nothing difficult or fast on it.
