  1. I also use tapewounds strings and as I read that products used on metal strings can damage them, I went  to classical nylon guitar site and read that they take the strings apart and wash them with soap.

I don't want to take my strings apart and didn't see how I could use soap on my bass, but I found a rather soft product that washes and greases the strings and the fingerboard a little. again, it's pretty soft. Purchased from Thomann. Not completely sure of the result, it works but it remains soft.

The one I use is this one

There is also this one witch I don't know

If you are concerned about weight why not consider a Class D stereo power amp? They are available everywhere. They are light, cheapish and you can just use one channel if you wish.

my main bass amp is a 2KW capable Class D amp with a lil' tube preamp I built for it. Both together in a 4U SKB rack case I can pick the thing up with just two fingers.

    Hi Paul

Can you tell us a bit more about the Class D stereo power amp you are using?

For the moment I am using a Jay Ganz Straight Ahead power amp. Happy with it.

  3. What makes me think of the possibility of the Vox was its HP of 8".
Generaly for my gigs, I never go below 10. exept  for the Markbass 801 witch can be quite loud for it's size, I find that below 10, it always lacks bass. As for the Markbass 801, This is why I have a thought for the Vox.

As I was answering to Al Krow, your answer came.
Yes external power brick though doesn't give the impression of a gig worthy amp.
I already have a Phil Jones 7kg Bass Cub with 5 "speakers that I would like to sell because I find it a bit light in power compared to the Markbass. It lacks bass, on the other hand the sound is HiFi. The double four could be an option but… 409 € A Used one may be. This makes me think that I can not expect more from the Vox than from the Phil Jones that I already have, except from one HP of 8 compared to two of 5. Think Think Think 😀

  5. Al Krow, thank's for your answer and your link to Talkbass.

(I should have thought about it).
There is not much to read about it for the moment.
Yes the Vox is tempting but probably a bit just in level.

The Markbass is incredibly powerful for its size,

and you're right, the Vox AC 30 is super heavy. 😀
I think I'll probably order the Vox from Thomann and if that doesn't fit to me, send it back.
I always take care of the things I return.

To be continued while waiting for other people to answer.

  6. Hi

Can anyone compare the small Markbass Micromark 801 amp
    https://www.thomann.de/gb/markbass_micromark_801.htm?ref=intl&shp=eyJjb3VudHJ5IjoiZ2IiLCJjdXJyZW5jeSI6NCwibGFuZ3VhZ2UiOiJlbiJ9
    To the Vox VX50BA
     https://www.thomann.de/gb/vox_vx50ba.htm?
I have the Markbass and use it for cafe restaurant, and find it quite powerful for its size, even with a drummer. I play jazz. Now my back being what it is today, I am 68 years old, I would be interested in the Vox which weighs 4.4kg instead of 6.6 for the Markbass.
Can the Vox be pushed let's say at 2/3 or more of its power and keep a clean sound ? Has anyone ever tried the Vox in such a situation or have both amps and can make an a/b ? jazz trio cafe restaurant with drummer + singer?
All your comments will be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I follow this post with great interest because I am interested in a pedal similar to the ToneDexter but smaller: LRBaggs Voiceprint DI

    https://www.thomann.de/fr/l_r.baggs_voiceprint_di.htm
And for the moment there is not much feedback on this type of product, and more especially coming from bass players.
I play jazz on a big acoustic bass, Takamine TB10.

    https://www.thomann.de/en/takamine_tb10.htm.

For your recordings, I particularly listened to the Zeller and the Kostein.
If I understand correctly, when you say that the recording is bypassed, that means that the sound comes just from the microphone or pickup installed on the bass, compared with the recording modified by the Tonedexter which is therefore a mix of the two?
Personally, so far and from what I've heard, it's not easy to hear if the difference in sound is important or not, especialy for the price of the pedal.

Happy Jack, Thank’s for your recordings and I will follow this post with great interests to learn more about it.

  8. I bought this strap: PolyLock Ernie Ball neoprene
    https://www.ernieball.fr/guitar-accessories/guitar-straps/polylock-guitar-straps#P04145
which doesn’t need the installation of strap locks. I'm very happy with it, very comfortable, a bit similar to the Gruv Gears with a center band and one on each side.

Also I am surprised that no one has mentioned the Harley Benton Guitar Strap available from Thomann which for £14.30 makes a pretty good job:

I loved the warmth of Thomastik’s - they’re mad expensive and feel a bit rubbery but the sound was beautiful.

To mimic an upright, I used roto trubass.

Playing always plugged on an amp, 0n my Takamine TB10, I used the La Bella 760N Black Nylon Tape which sound really  great. You could give a try:
    https://www.thomann.de/fr/la_bella_black_nylon_760n.htm
And I would have kept them if my strings were not quite high from the fingerboard, so I found the gauge to be a bit too strong, so I put Thomastik JF344 low tension which sound great too and I keep them.
To minimize the cost of changing strings, I bought this small ultra sound machine to clean them from time to time. It doesn't make them new, but it looks like they have been around for a month.
