Ooof! That's a belter, it doesn't have to be complex to be good. I remember Herrick from way back with the Wal basses. Hmmm. Proper food for thought this one. Gonna go for the White covers on the PUs Lee-Man?

    100%

    Would look great.

  2. Right, more GAS!

I'd like a fiesta red PJ,  BW JPJ 4 body, Tort p/guard.

Rosewood jazz type neck with 'clay' dots, nitro finish,  synthetic bone nut, graphite rods. Not sure if I'd go for 21 or 22 frets.

Chrome Nickel hardware: Hipshot vintage bridge, Hipshot Ultralite machine heads and D-Tuner.

Herrick White PJ pickups with V/V/T passive controls.

Should be a good recipe for a versatile vintage styled machine.

  3. Interesting. I’d quite like to find a home for some oversized Aero dual coil pickups I have.

A j4 string jazz body (potentially reduced size) and 34” neck. Natural finish - Tru oil neck, thin satin nitro body.

Rosewood type fingerboard, nickel silver frets, graphite rods. Neck radius from my vintage Sadowsky. Truss rod wheel adjuster at body end similar to the MusicMan design. Bone nut.

Chrome Nickel hardware: Hipshot Type A bridge, BT1 machine heads and D-Tuner.

The Aero pickups coupled to an Aguilar OBP3 preamp. Magnetic electronics cavity. Bell control plate. Liminlay side markers.

  4. Todays update:

    • Cavities shielded
    • Trem Fitted
    • Pickups in
    • Controls drilled. All holes are angled to come out of the carve top on the surface perpendicular.
    • Inside the holes are counterbored to make sure the nuts sit flat on the pocket floor.

Up next is to tidy the EMG plug and play wiring. Sort frets and a set up and then it should be ready to rawk!

  5. Checked my email this morning and theres more progress and news on the parts build.

The side mount jack hole has been cut and reamed:

The inserts for the Gotoh trem don't match the ones in the body. Sims arn't too sure what trem they are from. With this in mind the inserts are going to be removed, plugged and replaced. This was meant to be a quick home parts build, but it's out of my wheelhouse. Pleased I called in a professional!

  6. Bit of an update:

Neck is on and cable routing holes drilled. Strap buttons drilled and on.

The machine head holes were different sizes on each side of the headstock. The original holes have been drilled out and reamed.

  7. More pics. My PPJ5 body is in for paint. Base coat is first, then its being shot in nitrocellulose Daphne blue. Theres another PPJ5 fretted up for grabs thats shortly going in to paint. I think capri orange or Daphne blue is on the cards. If your quick get a deposit down and choose ;)

So far I'm really knocked out by luthier Bruce's attention to detail and clever engineer touches that should make this bass smoke on gigs.

  8. So, back in lockdown 1.0 I brought a Sims Guitars body and neck. I thought it would be a fun project. But, it needed a little more fettling than my limited DIY skills would allow. As I need a guitar for work I've decided to give up and pass it on to a professional to finish. Bruce Hartley at @Bassworks is a great luthier and has agreed to put the final pieces together for me.

    Specs are:

    • Sims Guitars body & neck. The finish is beautiful. It looks black at a distance, but is actually a very dark, slightly translucent root beer with a fleck of purple).
    • EMG 81 in the neck and bridge, prob going to just skip the middle pickup and go HH
    • Gotoh VS100 trem
    • Hipshot locking machine heads

Its going to be a great shred machine when its done.

what do all the knobs do? there's like extra wood ones beneath the bridge?

I got to have a quick play on this the other day. It's awesome, so much GAS for it.

  10. A few more pictures from this weeks build progress.

The extended thumb groove on the heal is really comfy on my fretted PPJ5.

Really impressed with the build progress and attention to detail. gCELys0.jpg

This isn't the final control cover. The actual cover is a slightly newer enhanced design using magnets instead of screws.

Was wondering about the crazed finish, and those weird holes on the back, just been the through the build diary , some really interesting ideas. Enjoy the bass !

Thanks man. The pickup height is a pretty smart solution. Feels like it's going to be super gig worthy (when gigs I back of course😭).
