I feel for you mate, these things happen to us all.
Finding the right people to play in a band is always the No 1 issue.
In my experience, potential musos for semi pro bands are likely to fall into 4 categories:
A. Bl**dy good – and they know it. Likely to disappear at a moments notice if they get a sniff of something better.
B. Good, but 'mature' -and they stopped listening to music around 1980 and haven’t progressed since.
C. Good, but completely flaky and unreliable – chances of them turning up at a gig (a) on the correct day (b) with all their gear in working order and (c) having learnt all the material = zero
D. Absolutely tone deaf apart from one or two show-off party pieces they always trot out.
I hope you manage to find better. 🙂

If someone asks you what 'digging in' means, just show them the fingerstyle playing on this. ❤️

Whole bunch of lawsuits here.......
Still, they can afford it.

Their arrangement of Midnight at the Oasis was sublime -a really essential cover to learn for any aspiring bass player 🙂

I can in all honesty say I’ve never heard of them.
I think you'll find them in the next file along from "Americans who didn't realise that Spinal Tap were a parody band"

Thanks for this Binky, absolutely excellent - creative, tongue in cheek, super clever. 👍
The track Moon and Moron is pure Cardiacs !
Just have a look at the on screen lyrics in this video for the opening track - it doesn't get better than this ! 😁

Because it is an old track it is quite muffled in the mix:everlasting-bass.mp3
Russ Stableford was the session bass player used for Everlasting Love. There was a big fuss made by the tabloid media at the time when it was revealed that none of the band had actually played on the record, it was all session players. Well, who would have thought ? 😏
I played with Love Affair for a while in the mid '70's, (I think I was their 13th bass player !) so I know that song backwards. Despite the appalling quality, the extracted bass line that Woodinblack has posted does sound like the original to me. And this really is a song where muted pick playing is essential !

I find them much harder on round wound strings
Well, surely they're harder on rounds ? - I know I'd certainly find them harder just because of the nature of the strings - coarse and edgy as opposed to smooth and silky. Mind you, seems some people refer to glissando when what they're actually doing is hammering on a semitone - slightly different effect IMHO.
You do a little gliss right at the end of your recording - excellent by the way! - and I can't work out whether you're using a sliding gliss or hammering. Sounds good either way ! 🙂
PS Ernie Ball cobalts are my favourite flats 👍

Thanks for posting this Ped - a new listen for me, and gold plated A1 stuff. Singer's phrasing reminds me of iamddb.
Can't find the name of the bass player, but an absolute master of discreet glissando and ghost notes, and a great ad for the PJ sound, which I love.
Here's another track:

Agree, maybe someone should ask Rick Beato to analyse the song as part of a new series: "What makes this song awful?"
- That's a brilliant idea ! - I'd certainly watch Rick doing a series on that theme. Let the pain begin................

What's this ?
Now someones autotuned Sarah Brand's track ! 😏

Does this mean I have to turn up late for rehearsals with my high maintenance girlfriend, turn my amp up to 11 and widdle away endlessly whilst the rest of the band are trying to work out some harmony parts ?
...Thought so ! 😁

But then the band takes the financial penalty and not the bar owner that booked them. And if the punters do like the band...they still don't get paid.
Yes - and the only conclusion to reach is that life's a b*tch ☹️

Poor analogy. You’re being asked to come to a gig and play for the benefit of others. Many such events may well feature paid bar staff, some of whom may just have started doing such work. They still deserve a wage.
Yes, but the bar staff are serving beer which the customers are already prepared to pay money for !
The band may be serving up music which the customers are only prepared to taste if it's a free sample.

And so you perpetuate the problem!
Your practicing was in the studio/bedroom/garage surely. If you’re being asked to perform your skills for the entertainment of others, you ought to be paid.
Here's an analogy, Daz.
Would it be reasonable for a shop to ask window shoppers to pay a fee just for looking in the window?
The answer is clearly no, and similarly as a musician or a band you're setting out your stall of whatever music/entertainment you're offering, and maybe people will come and have a look . Then if a demand builds up because people like what you do maybe you can start charging. But not until that point has been reached. 🙂

Well, Higgie, your Welsh Wizard has done an A1 job on the arrangement for the medley - faultless.
And you're no slouch in the playing department either - love the clear open B on the Sadowsky at 2.42 !

*sigh* more internet lies. There is NO evidence that he EVER had the tea cakes, and is on record as saying, every time I went there, it was either the curd tarts or a fat rascal.
Hey, that's a bit rich. Jolene on reception at the studio did have a bit of a weight problem, but James never called her a fat rascal. And as for the curd tarts, - well, they were just there for a 'work experience week'. Apparently.

Ah - now I know what to do with my knackered old roundwounds -
- just advertise them as 'authentic Jamerson style relic -ed reissues'
😁

Acoustic geometry, or why your bass sound might be great at one gig and then pants at the next.
