  1. I went from Mega heavy Mesa 2 * 10s to one Barefaced 2*10 and one 1*10.  It's a really flexible combination.  I use the 1*10 for practices...it weighs nothing, but is quite loud on its own.  For most gigs I typically just use the 2*10 either with a Mesa 800+ or with a Handbox R400, depending on how retro I want to sound.  Alex at Barefaced is really helpful, and if you don't like it, half of Bass Chat will buy one of his cabs off you, just like that!

  2. l agree with all the warnings about wanting to teach you TAB.  I went to a teacher who predominantly teaches guitar, but I said to him that I wanted to sight-read rythm.  I'm a big fan of James Jamerson and Chuck Rainey, and sight reading the variation in Motown, or Chuck Rainey's Steely Dan numbers is a good way of learning that style.

The teacher would deliberately give me tracks to sight read that he knew I didn't know, so the lessons were always challenging.  His worst trick was to play me a track and ask me to write out the music from scratch!  After the lesson, I could always go and do the You Tube cheat, but it was always to help me nail down the written score.

Coming back to complicated scores some time after learning them is also a really good refresher.  Dean Town is a good one, as is the chord change on the original Marvin Gaye Ain't no Mountain High Enough.  And if anyone can teach me how to nail the middle passage of Paladino's Any Where I Lay my Hat...I would appreciate it!

I'm trying to justify a five string in a punk band.  Tuned down to A, to boot.

Just put the bass down.  Thought it looked splendid.

Forgive me saying, but the carpet doesn't look sticky  (or dirty) enough for a punk band, regardless of the number of strings

That's super quirky and fun looking. Like the Saab of the bass world.

Do you have to take the jack plug out to put the sunroof up?😬

  5. This might be addressed by Ped, or the wider knowledgeable and practical end of readers.....As the proud owner of a number of Ped's fantastic straplocks, I find the top screw in my fender jazz gently comes loose over time.  No problem with my trusty Swiss Army Knife phillips screwdriver to hand at a gig (so long as I have it with me), but is there an alternative solution?  I really don't want to clog my beloved Fender CS with glue!  Perhaps I should be more Bill Wymanesq at gigs!

  6. Twin Channel 300w Combo, 500w when used with C4 Cab.  I bought a second C4 Cab which has only been used once or twice.  The combo and cab are both c 10 years old. The bottom C4 cab is c 7 years old.

New, the amp costs £825 and the C4s cost £395.  As far as I can see the new version of the Suitcase only has one channel.  I bought this originally so I could run fretted and unfretted  settings at the same time.

PJBs are renowned for their clear sound.  I also run an Ear-Box through the rig (not for sale, but recommended) and tend to use a Noble Pre-Amp (also not for sale!) for a fantastic vintage sound.

For the majority of their lives these have been used as a practice rig (my main rig as a Handbox/Mesa D800 plus barefaced).  I used the combo in big band at music school for a while.  It has one small ding bottom front left at about 7 o'clock, and the back tolex on the amp and top cab have very slight edge lifting from being in the sun in my office.  Otherwise very carefully looked after and never abused.

Combo ways a chunky 40 lb and each C4 weighs 29lb.

I have the slip covers, but not boxed.  Therefore prefer collection.  I live in Ealing.  Interested buyers are very welcome to come and try it out.  I am left handed, so you may need to bring your own bass!

You could keep the amp, sell your 2 cabs and get a BF Two10S that's switchable between 4 and 12ohms - just a thought!

So that's exactly the combination I use mine at at gigs (plus DI into the mix).  They are an absolutely fantastic little amp.  Very small and portable.

  8. As an owner of a 1980 PEB Stingray I've found this thread really interesting.  To add a niche comment, the mis-alignment on mine is on the E string, not the G String (which is perfectly aligned).  They must have had one jig for the positioning of the pick-up/bridge.  This hasn't stopped me experimenting with the relative height of the G string (using the adjustment screws, not mucking about with the pole pieces.  IT sounds pretty even to me, but the bottom end response of the E String is pretty full on at all times.pickuppolepositioning.thumb.jpg.7f81c25ea20be37cb8a4892a2489ac6d.jpg

Just to point out to any youngsters reading this thread that this 👆 would make an absolutely ideal opening line for your CV, especially if you are applying for work in a veterinary practice or taking money on the dodgems down the local fair.

This is very true.  What I didn't make clear was my sister and her son (who owned the ferrets) are both vets.  Over the years there have been cats, dogs, Lincolnshire Longwool Sheep, ducks, Alpacas, an owl, chinchillas...oh...ferrets...and the funniest of the lot was Cyril the Squirrel.

  10. My sister kept ferrets for a while as part of her homage to Dr Doolittle's menagerie.  They were very playful (if slightly smelly) and liked ambushing things/people.  Small persons' birthday party balloons were a particular favourite for full on attack (no flinching at the noise).  One ferret tried to ambush my sister while she was on the loo.  It unfortunately decided to pounce just as she got up while simultaneously flushing the toilet.  There then was a mad scrabble with a slightly desperate look,  for the ferret to climb back out of the toilet, looking slightly bedraggled but still up for some more mischief.

I can also recommend ferret racing.

IME if you worry about this, then it will happen and you will be upset.

for all of the 90s I used an Overwater original bass, which I picked up second hand at a bargain price, but which I subsequently discovered would have been very expensive and time-consuming to replace as a new one would have had to be a custom order and would probably not have come with the original filter-based pre-amp. I can't recall this bass picking up any additional dents to the few almost invisible ones it already had when I bought it. Interestingly the much cheaper bass I had as a spare but luckily never needed to use at any gigs turned out to be covered in bashes and bumps when I came to sell it, despite the fact that it had spent most of it's life in its case or on a stand at the back of the stage.

Since then I have been playing Gus G3s live including 6 years of almost weekly gigs with The Terrortones where we were on the bill with Punks and Psychobillies. IMO if I don't play these expensive basses at gigs there would be no point in having them. Also just because an instrument is relatively cheap doesn't mean it's going to be easy to replace. In my other band I play the relatively cheaper Eastwood Hooky. As this has become my main bass with this band and there is no suitable alternative, I've been looking at getting a spare. I think I've seen two come up for sale second hand in the last 18 months and both went almost instantly. For a new one you have to pre-order and then wait 6 months.

IME the lack of an easily obtained suitable replacement is more of a worry than getting a bump or scrape on an expensive instrument, so I've stopped worrying about it altogether.

This intrigued me.  Are you happy to share a picture of said high end bass?
