My current situation is everything I have is bloody good. I don't even know what I'd WANT to have that could add to the repertoire in a practical manner, but that doesn't mean I can resist a bargain to tinker with and flip. Temptation has been low in the last few weeks, but that may be more indicative of a quiet market post Xmas.

I still check the usual places a few times a day, however.

See, tempting the GAS gods to make something available that you just can't resist; there lies trouble. Everything I have is of a very high quality too, but then I see a Hardly Bent One that looks so pretty and is, by default, cheap and boom, GAS (no, not that sort)!

    Beware the GAS!

I've just had fitted the Delano Sonar preamp to my RBX6JM but this was purchased in December. Selling one on Facebook currently which seems to be attracting attention but no actual offers, I don't have space for anything else currently so appear to be GAS Safe for now.

That’s the kind of statement that will ensure that something will appear that you can’t refuse. Tempt the GAS gods at your peril. ;)

I tried to listen to Rush after their excellent performace at the Taylor Hawkins tribute, but I couldn't get used to Geddy's vocals.

It does take a lot of getting used to, but I found the effort worthwhile. TBH, I tend to avoid the ‘70s output where Ged’s voice was the most shrill and have found my Rush niche in the ‘80 - early ‘90s era.

I came in to post this and somebody beat me to it lol

    Another entertaining video, Sir. 👏👏👏

For complete transparency - “Er, hello. I’m, er, Ezbass and I, er, like prog rock,” (shuffles away shamefacedly, whilst humming something in 7/4).

Go to .135 B string IF it will intonate properly.

But the main problem is the P pickup itself. By its very nature- with the Bass side forward- it is flubby. Add a bridge J or even just reversing the P so the bass side is closer to the bridge will make a world of difference.

There is a reason why 5 string Ps aren’t as popular and it’s the inherent flub.

    Inherent Flub, top band name.

Jazz Basses have 2xPUPs, end of 🎸

    True that.

If I had been designing that bass, I think that would’ve set the pickup back a bit so that it’s not in the P or J neck p/up ‘sweet spot’, more towards the MM position. If you’re going for different, go different.

Also, I’m intrigued with the recent fascination for gold foils, which has filtered across from the skinny stringed market. They’re not the most powerful of pickups and plainly have some build issues. It does appear to be more of a marketing exercise that one based in tonal superiority. As ever, YMMV.

My bass is so big that I'd have to stand on a box to get the nut at eye level!!!

Exageration: standing up to play pizz, the nut is a couple of inches above eye level.  If it's comfy, do it.  I'm guessing you can reach the upper registers more easily on an EUB than on a DB as you don't have all that wood work to reach around!

Yeah it’s super easy, but I regard that as a bad thing. You can get stick on rubber thingies that, once attached, can indicate where the body begins on a proper DB and I think I might get a couple so that if I’m called on to play a DB, I won’t have upper register reach shock. TBH I try and play everything in the first 5 positions and don’t stray too far south at all.

Danny T is a pretty big bloke, he's standing up and his bass isn't huge; he already has the spike a long way out; it doesn't look that unusual to me.  Also, he holds his bass rather "sideways on" compared to the current norm.  So maybe not perfect by a teacher's standards anyway.

I'm around 5'9" and have a rather long scale 4/4 bass, probably have it a bit higher than Danny (only 4" of spike out), in part to get my bowing arm in a comfy place and also to reach the higher notes, a teacher noted that I was bowing over the fingerboard and raising the bass would put my bow lower down; if playing purely pizz it can go down a bit.

I wouldn't obssess about bass height.  It's comfort and being able to reach all the notes you want to play that matter, if you put it too high then half and first position will be uncomfortable (your lower arm is higher up and will tire quickly, and too low will stop you reaching the highest notes (if you ever go there) - combined size of man and bass DT can doubtless reach all he notes he needs with the bass fairly low.

Have a look at the recomended music to listen to thread and you'll see all kinds of stance - including people playing "new dutch school" method in which you sit with both feet on the floor, the bass quite low and sloped a long way out, more like a cello.  One of the wonderful things about double bass is the variety (in size, shape, sound and method of playing the damned thing).

I dropped my EUB so that the nut is around my eye level (like Danny), as opposed to forehead height that beginner’s guides seem to favour. Ooh, that’s better, feels more comfy and I seem to play more in tune too. Result!

  9. Thanks for that. I’ve had a quick look at the 2 videos from ‘88 and Danny has his bass height very low compared to what I’ve seen as the recommended height (I’m new to upright and recently acquired my first EUB), I might give a lower setting a go (good enough for DT and all that).

@ezbassyou wouldn't last 10 minutes in a church band, then!

I suspect that this would be the case. As a much younger man, I was a regular church goer (including gospel bearer, acolyte & crucifer), but I haven’t set foot in one other than for christenings, weddings and funerals for many a year. I became disenchanted with the hypocrisy of many of the parishioners once outside of a service. This seems to somewhat amplified when it comes to church bands from what I’ve read in these pages.

That's a bit harsh, although I see where you are coming from.

Church bands don't really have a concept of playing a song right.  Rather, they play up to their own ability, and what they feel.  So, if the original version of the song has a bass riff between verses that they can't play, then there won't be a bass riff.

I am perhaps the only one in the band who has a recent background playing covers, and understands the concept of playing in the key, and version of the recording.

The guitarist is more of a soloist who expects others to hear and follow his chordal embellishments  - he is so instinctive a player that sometimes he is unsure what he played, when I ask.

That makes it nearly impossible to follow him perfectly (but if he is happy with D in the bass when he goes to an Em to C, then I can play with him). It also means that playing covers note-perfect is more of a challenge for him.

He is a good guy, with a narrower skill set.

I am perhaps a bit of a plonker, but with experience of more bands,  and reading, chord charts, and tab - but minimal ear playing.

Harsh? You should hear the voices in my head when I read about those who expect everyone to follow them in a group, that’s not playing in a group for me, that’s being a diva. I’m not sure his somewhat selfish approach has anything to do with group worship. I’ll leave it there as the voices in my head are grabbing the flaming torches and pitchforks :D .
