  1. Ever since doing a 51 Precision parts caster build I've always fancied the idea of a single-coil semi acoustic version.

I looked and looked, but Fender never really did what I wanted. Surprised, I decided to do my own. So a chat to Graham at GSPBASSES and a body and neck was ordered.

Body and neck came a while back, and it's now floated to the top of the projects pile - so it's time to make it!!

    Here it is as arrived:

Slightly confused: a 72 would be a poly finish so was it stripped and re-done with a nitro refinish?

There's poly and then there's poly. And strictly speaking there's no such thing as a poly finish really..

The Urethane coatings fender started using in the mid to late 60's and into the early 70's are very very different to the finishes you get nowadays, and especially on the classic thick Japanese 'poly' finish from the 80's and 90's.

Fender wouldn't have used the finish used on this one after the Fullerton plant closed in the early 80's - but I've seen plenty for which the wear, checking, shrinking, chipping and scraping can be just like this one.

That era tort is so lovely.

It does mean I can't buy a modern bass with a tort guard, as just about variation of it now is just 'orrid.

Proper old tort has it's disadvantages..

The tort on my 64 Precision is quite something to behold - almost 3D in the flesh - but it shrinks. Man does it shrink as it out-gasses. Some of the screws in mine are getting on for a 45 degree angle - I was brave and 'reprofiled' the holes and metal plate a bit to keep the original tort on, but there will come a day when really the only option will be a Spitfire replacement..

I think the technical term, given the smoky venues these basses will have been played in, is 'Fagnolia'... 😀

Nice. Like it. There's definitely a hint of B&H White about them ;)

  5. Wow. That's some shift in tone on the finish!

I have a 74 Precision in Oly White which has been somewhat abused, but it's gone a milky custard..

Looks flipping' brilliant tho! Well done - and play the heck out of it ;)

    From the Barefaced site ...

    25.5" high x 19.5" wide x 13.5" deep ( 64cm x 48cm x 34cm...)

    The Compact is 15" (It's the Midget that's 12"...)

Hope this helps; good luck with the sale.

Thanks! That's the one. 15" driver and ported (no tweet) and those dimensions look right. Of course, the big selling point is the weight! (and the sound quality!)

Yes, yes you do! I better stock up on biscuits and diesel!  I'll see how my diary is over the next few weeks and see what I can do! ( These last few months I've literally been working 7 days a week! yikes!)

No problem. Any time. And any excuse for bass chat ;)

Sounds great, thank you! Though you might have to keep me away from that nice collection of P's you have! :)

Oh, they are compulsory to try ;)

As is the vanderkley cab and EICH 1000w head...

    Heheh...

Oh Spalding! My old band (many years ago) used to play up that way. There used to be a venue called The Birds? Trying to remember where...

You are certainly under an hour away - less on a good day. And I have space for a proper crank up (no close neighbours to shout) Let me know if you want to try it.

See this is why I love Basschat. Sir, that is a kind offer! Thank you, though I suspect I am miles from you along with the very kind gentleman who also offered up a demo of a pair of FR800's. I live in the butthole of England I think! Very much appreciated though. :)

    Where’s the butthole?!

Last night at the rehearsal room I had no joy plugging my Helix directly in to the "bass amp" on offer. So I decided on the PA instead. It offered a much better tone given it's pair of 2x12 cabinets but still it was pretty puny after years of battering. Just think, rocking up with essentially a high powered, easy to carry, great sounding combo that will handle everything, even playing MP3's to help band mates learn the songs they should have before they rocked up to rehearsal :) :) :)

I just need to have an opportunity to test drive the best offerings discussed in this thread and maybe those that haven't.

You can try my QSC k10.2 any time you like.

I was feeding my zoom B3 into the return on my amp and it sounded amazing - I’m able to tune the B3 to what I want far better than straight into an amp - made me wonder again if I really need an amp and just get a FRFR pa speaker

    *whispers*

Do it.. kill rock and roll, kill it.. go on.. kill it

Yes, sorry. Obviously there should be some sort of profanity filter. Think of the children!

I came here as I was considering some Hipshot ultralights for my current semi hollow 51P build..

..and my sensibilities have been shocked by the unfiltered profanity! I need a lie down before contemplating tuners any more

I use mine with the Bass Amp preset most of the time, the preamp pedal I use doesn't really add any voicing to the signal though. I just like the sound of my bass straight into the desk so I've gone for the simplest option really, save for just plugging the bass straight in. Even fewer reasons for me to go shopping for £200+ pedals I don't need then!

Lol. I wish I liked that setup. I think the bass preset is fine, and tbh at a push I’d use it straight in for a gig and be perfectly happy.

But the side effect of this blimmin’ frfr journey has been the almost unquenchable desire to possess every preamp Di pedal known to man.

I have 4 so far (poor show I know) but that’s purely through self restraint. I can easily see me having 400

heh heh, I was just quoting what someone else said on the thread about not using big heavy old stacks that I think made me chuckle several times. Bassists will thank you the world over.. Chiropractors will have to look elsewhere for clients :)

To be honest, if rock n roll relies totally on massive cabs for survival then it’s dead.

    As would be my back...

A revoltion. You started a revolution. (But you did err "kill rock n' roll" ha ha)

Not sure I like the moniker of I killed Rock and Roll, but, hey, I'll take what I can :)

  18. Re-listed as original thread closed but buyer has pulled out..

    Barefaced Compact Gen2.

It's not been gigged since I've had it, and it was in really good nick when I got it off here. Original handle and no damage, all feet in tact, all corners on and no dents, covering in great condition with no knocks, dings or the like. Sounds great and broken in nicely! Comes with a Roqsolid cover.

Ideally I want a trade - and the real preference would be a Barefaced OneTen as I need something super small and light for acoustic style gigs - the Vanderkley 2x10 aint that (!) but will take offers/straight sale.

I'm near Peterborough, Lincs, and don't have a suitable box for posting, but happy to travel around a not-too-stupid distance for the right offer or for a really good trade.

Is anyone going directly into the Line In of these PA cabs rather than using a preamp?

The QSC k10.2 has a specific “bass” dsp setting and I’ve tried it - it’s good, but I prefer the colouring a Pre-amp gives
