@drlargepants - you are sounding sentimental!

Thanks for the tip! Still debating whether to get a push-pull series/parallel switch installed. Perhaps have it as conventional P with knob down, and single coil with knob up.
I have a series/parallel switch on my ACG Finn 4 - even after fitting a P-Retro preamp I kept the switch as I really like the variance it gives. Note output level is different, so don’t be tempted to use it as a boost - adjust volume to match for each setting and you get two nicely varied tonal outputs

Excuse the highjack but I've just pulled the trigger on one of these pickups from Oil City for my Japanese Blue Flower 68 P. I find myself not using the Bass as the stock pick-up is a bit 'thuddy ' ( yes, I know flats don't help)! Sounds as if it might be just what i need from your description!
Put some rounds on and dabble with your EQ and you can have as much clank and scrape as you like. It’s pretty hot but I like it - still planning some sound samples.

I’m confused as to whether I should hate this, like this, love this or have a passive indifference to it now..
What do I do? I want to stay trendy and on message but I also want to be able to shrug my shoulders with a completely passive carelessness that renders me so cool that I’m positively...
..I have no idea what I’m talking about now.

I'd say that was a pretty good descriprion of a Shergold Marathon. Or possibly a Hayman 4040.
Ah, but with this one you can have it on the strap for more than 10 mins....

(Reposted from build thread)
I’ve tried it.
Well now. It sounds really rather different to my 51P partscaster. Far more open, lots more snarl and much more in the mids. It’s not as spaced as a Precision - much less of that piano like quality and far more growl in the mids.
Then there’s the hollow nature - it’s got some the air and hollow thump you get from a hollow body but still has plenty of sustain (centre block no doubt).
Compared to my precisions it doesn’t sound like a Precision. But it’s not 100% Ric - it’s like a bag of Ric flavoured crisps - sort of Pricisionbacker if you like.
However, it sits so well in the mix when I play along to stuff - far more presence and up front sound due to those highlighted mids. Interesting.
Have tried flats and roundwounds - rounds seem to accentuate the Ric side more, flats the P side.
I have an idea for sound samples so bear with me..- 1

Thanks for the suggestion, I noticed that Creamery pickups near me in Manchester do a 74 P bass pickup that I’m looking into.
Sounds good - Bare Knuckle do something similar too, and worth asking Oil City as well

Come on now you lot - you’re acting like drummers.

And I would expect to pay well under £100 for a good one - more like £70-80 so well in line with an off the shelf.
I have a 74P and could measure it if you want a guide figure to aim for with a winder

Pick one of our best U.K. pickup winders and ask them to do you one which will match what a 78 P would have had - most guys will have done enough rewinds to do a really good copy.
I can supply recommendations if that would help.

Understatement of the Month!
It looks really nice. Sort of dark and sultry.
Lol - moment of truth later when I try it out..

If you are at the Birmingham guitar show in February Bridgehouse ... bring it to our stand and demo it 🙂
Gladly will do!

That looks the business! What Bass Bash will this be available to gawp at?
Dunno - I’m in Lincs so will need to have a look. I’m more than happy to arrange with anyone who would want to try it for a meet up tho..

Mudbucker covers are pretty much impossible to get ... I'd do a version if I could get those. Perhaps a custom made ebony cover or similar would do the job. I'm an engineer not a woodworker mind ...
Time to use internet fu to see what I can find...

Sadly no ... I started to be more of a guitar player than a bass player, so I sold it to the bass player of my band at the time ... he used it for years. It's still out there somewhere. It's easily recognisable: a fretless Thunderbird bass with a ebony board and a Model 1 DiMarzio Mudbucker in the neck position and a split P Bass in the bridge. Pretty unique.
You know what - I fancy doing an SG body with a mudbucker split P combo now...

looks bloody gorgeous! The all black hardware, and slightly brutal looking pickup, contrasts brilliantly with the wood grain and antique look. Me like ... lots!
Me too mate! Lovely pickup - can’t wait to give it a try later on. It’s an East harness as well so high quality tone and volume pots.

I built my first bass back in 1978(it was a set neck Thunderbird copy) out of an old mahogany hardware shop counter! I love the idea of recycling wood.
You still got that?

Noted @The Guitar Weasel
Found some screws and some foam with a couple of springs. Fitted just perfectly.
Popped on the back cover and so that leaves just the string tree (still in the post!) to fit.
I will set it up and set Pickup height later on this evening and give an initial report. I have a plan for sound samples but you might have to be a touch more patient with this..
Doesn’t look too shabby huh?

Should have said about foam ... I have loads here ... If you are short I'll post you some.
I must have some somewhere and some screws - I’ve not looked yet but something will pop up in one of the many drawers

Torx or go home

Pickup has arrived.. hopefully I will get some time over the weekend to fit it!
I need to sort out some mounting hardware - I’m low on foam/rubber slugs - but that won’t be difficult!

I’ll update the build thread with progress shots then come back here with results
Please tell me why I should avoid getting a Rickenbacker!

Either that or you are trying really hard to justify hanging on to that Ric
