1.
I'm guessing that is the guy on Talkbass that posts billions of photos of his weird DIY basses for the most tenuous of reasons? Or is he the other guy who posts copyright information underneath each photo? I don't understand what makes that guy tick. He converted one of those 4003W basses to a 5er when they were brand new. He then tried to sell it on Ebay for the RRP! No thanks, pal.
Yes - that's him; I almost blocked him. There was a thread where someone had received an original Ric 5-string to do some work and they shared pictures of it with some rather shonky customisations, along with some choice words; well, the chap in question was the one who did it and he got a bit offended. But, based on that, I would probably not have him work on a guitar of mine. (But I've just stepped away from TB anyway, so problem solved...)
2. What I especially liked about it was how unpretentious everybody was and folks were just going "play my guitar if you like".
3. Nice bass, worth getting sorted!
4. Unfortunately, it's at least £8k more than I have to spend...
5. I like the "it needs new strings, so I'll knock a fiver off for them"! The seller is either a comedian or delusional! (Or maybe both!!!)
6. OK - I found a UK supplier at £19, which is pricey, but less of a faff. (There'll probably be loads of them on offer for less somewhere next week!)
7. They're $9.50 in the US from Pick of the Ricks, but shipping adds another $15.50, which comes out at £18.60. But that takes it over the £15 threshold, so if it's stopped by customs there'll be Import Duty and VAT added, adding about £4. And the mail service will add a £8 service fee. So totalling £30 for a piddly $9.50 unit. (Getting two reduces the per-shipping price, but that definitely takes it over the customs limit.)
8. Thanks - his ones are not the Ric ones and are 500k. Also, they have the terminals on the bottom and the guitar has a shielded control bay. The real Ric ones are 330k and like two stacked pots (with the upper one being a simple SPST switch). (I have ordered a cheap Chinese one on a punt that it might fit, but I think it'll be too tall also.)
9. Well, I had a push-pull pot for a Shaftesbury Ric copy I'm doing up, but it turns out it's too tall to fit. Can anybody point me at where to get a Ric 330k pot with the SPST push-pull switch, please?

11.
I like it......
I like it too; it's a shame the headstock is just generic, though.
12. Well, I sat down to work out "Sunrise" this evening and the bass line on the 1972 album is different to my recollection of what Davey played (I guess I'm one of those ones he mentioned who goes "Aha! that's not quite right!"); I had been thinking I'd better go back and check those lines out... Now I've got to find an example of Davey playing it to work that out (I should've recorded him on my phone!). I liked his version - more modern and aggressive than the original, I'd say.
13. I'm doing a couple of site tours to check out some options; I might get back to you...
14.
Its made of ash rather than alder It has a different shaped tummy cut (sort of longer along the top) Its a nitro finish rather than poly like a standard Mexican Oh and yes its Mexican
Cheers - thanks for the info.
15. Is there anything significant about a Nate Mendel body versus a standard Precision (just asking, not passing comment!)?
16. Very good for practising scales.
17.
A left handed Warwick? I'm thinking someone was in hog heaven Double P pickup for the win.
He said he had a pair of them made for him by Warwick; the pickups are based on his Warwick Buzzard. He did a lot more work with the volume controls than most bass players and the bass seemed to keep its sound regardless.
18.
Many thanks to the organisers another cracking day, motorway issues aside. Steve Lawson was the highlight of the day for me, I'd have sat and listened to him talk all day. Will have to check out some of his records, some Uriah Heep too - though as an Opeth fan I should have done that ages ago.
The Heep albums with the Roger Dean covers are the best, IMHO. That said, I haven't really heard the newer stuff. But I might - I quite liked Davey's playing.
19. Well, I'm home now! I really enjoyed it - met a load of great people, played & saw some interesting basses. Sign me up for next year! (Just off to learn a couple of Uriah Heep songs now...)
20. Oops...
21.
Turns out they're not idiot-proof! Mk 1 & 1A are great bargains considering the quality, shame the through-neck 2 & 3 tend to be more in line with other similarly built Matsumokus. Always fancied a 2xP Thunder 2.
My first thought was "What an idiot!". Not only have they done an awful job of relicing, but they've also taken the logo off the headstock. Mind you, it's cheaper than this one: http://www.ebay.co.u...5.c100005.m1851
22. Fender do their own branded version too; they're not so expensive either. Edit: Oops - just saw discreet's link! The extra £10 shipping is a bit much, but I have seen one of the Fender ones in the UK, and it seemed to me to be really good value.
23.
Spoke to Ian he agrees, it's too big a job for the day. Sorry..
That's OK - it just happens to be something I've got on the go at the moment. (I might bring along my Partscaster and/or SG for a setup - space in car permitting!)
