erm..... a jazz bass has 2 jazz pickups in either 2 positions.. that bass has neither... when you move or customise a pickup config, its a hybrid... that lovely bass is no longer a jazz bass.. i can bet it sounds very different... its like having a Ferrari and putting a Maserati engine in it..

it used to be a jazz bass, but someone has changed it and turned a jazz bass into something different.. it sound silly to be so pedantic and im sure i sound like a nerd, but the line has to be drawn somewhere, and that is what this thread is about.. bet it sound very cool though

Does that mean Jaco's bass wasn't a Jazz, because he pulled the frets out and the pickguard off, making it different from what Fender envisioned? Not to mention he used to put a P bass neck on it sometimes...

  2. Probably just a bad solder joint.

When I got my Fender, I freaked out because the bridge pickup wasn't working. When I opened the pickguard a little, it seemed there was a wire pinched between guard and body, I slid that back into the cavity, rescrewed the pickguard down, and it worked perfectly. Never had a moments issue since, even now, years later.

Might be worth popping the control plate open and having a look, at least.

Read the very next line after your quote.

Strings in between pole pieces = warm.

( I happen to know Sterling Ball had a Stingray made by Leo in the early days with a 5-string pickup fitted for the same reason)

There actually are pole pieces under the strings, but they're sunken low under the covers, IIRC, they were designed this way to help the sound as you go further up the neck on the low strings, which'd be handy for a 5er.

I have a set of Daddario tapes on mine now, truly gorgeous sound.

The Century 6 Bubinga top below it works for me, looks like it has a dried blood splatter on it :)

"So, how'd your bass get all like that?"

"Oh, that?! Last drummer we had thought soloing was a good idea..."

I've found the Glockenklang preamps in my Sandbergs to be one of the best preamps I've used. They're transparent and natural sounding, and the selection of the frequency ranges seems spot on. They seem pretty reasonably priced too, but I've only spotted them available from Thomann so far.

I have the Glock in 2 basses now, mighty pre-amps. And if you get the seperated bass and treble knobs, you have the passive tone control when you go passive, love that.
