If you want to get rid off your John East MMSR preamp, I will be looking for one in a month or two :)
    (I'm looking for a 3-knob version, 'though)[/quote]

The one I have is a 3knob-3band, if I do end up changing it out, I'll probably just put it in another bass though.

  2. The East MM pre-amp gets a lot of love, and it is a sweet pre, I have one in a custom bass with a Nordstrand MM pickup, but I'm probably gonna change it to a Glockenklang.

I put a Basslines MM pre in a SX Stingray clone, along with a Basslines ceramic pickup, and that sounds great.

If you don't mind drilling a hole in the pickguard/control plate, I'd definitely recommend a series/single/parallel switch, they're the dog's bits.

Basically a Basslines pickup upgrade and Audere pre. Not too close, but not too shabby either! Full details are on the Youtube page info section. Please ignore playing :)

Which Audere do you have in there? The only one I could find without the switch was one with a blend knob, or do you have the switch inside the cavity unused?

    Sounds mighty!

    Furry with big feet? :)

Oh yeah! Ask Mr Graham about furry big foot tone.

Mammoth tusk nuts will do these sounds without the octaver.

"After all, the German luthier’s expensive basses are made with some of the same techniques used to make Stradivarius violins."

Hmm, could this technique involve carving bits of seasoned wood into the shape of a musical instrument???

Edit: ...or does he wind his pickups slightly hot like Strad used to....

IIRC he uses the same kind of finish.

    I hear he's using a behringer combo.

But in fairness, it's the most expensive Behringer combo.

  4. Anyone here tried them?!

I was working up a Thomann order, with some strings in it(mostly DR coated), and spotted them in the list, now I usually don't mind spending for better quality, but I certainly have no problems with value for money stuff, or a good deal. At the price differences, I could get 20 to 30 packs for the same price as 5 DRs.

So, any good, or a waste of money?

I remember hearing a rumor that the "made in the USA" sets are either repackaged D'Addarios, or made by them.

I have MEC J pups on my Corvette and I installed a Seymour Duncan 2 band EQ into it. Sounds great and I picked the pre-amp up off here for a pretty awesome price (about £100 less than a John East). Only thing that I would do differently would be to get the 3 band if possible

Them Duncan pre-amps are heavily underrated, sweet stuff.

  6. I've been digging Glockenklang lately, in fact thinking of swapping the East Pre in my Gadow out for a 2 band Glock.

Really though, pre-amps are quite like pickups in a way, different ones will work better depending on what sound you want, or if versatility is a major factor.
