  1. Here is my 1974 / 75 Fender Jazz. It's right on the cusp of the transition, with 74' dated pickups and pots, and a 4 bolt neck plate.

    The bass was taken in a partial trade for my 63' Precision, but I'm moving it on because I need to pay for some work to the house, and I have too many guitars, uprights and basses (apparently).

    It plays amazingly well, and since owning it I've cleaned the fretboard up and given it a full set up. This really is a great, gigging 70s Jazz and isn't prohibitively heavy, nor too beat up.

    I've listed the good, and not so good bits below... I have a huge amount more pictures to should you want to see them.

    I don't want to ship this abroad, and am reticent to send it in the UK if I'm honest. I will only do so if the buyer pays for fully insured shipping (and someone tells me where I get this from!).

    Details:[list]
    [*]Finish, neck bridge, pickups (although recently rewound), pots, neck, tuners, scrathcplate, bridge and pickup covers and case.
    [*]Plays really well, very bright (rewound pickups) and has been set up well.
    [*]No dead spots in the neck.
    [*]Finish wear isn't too bad, it's 'honest' I guess, commensurate with use, but doesn't suggest this bass has been abused.

    Things to note:[list]
    [*]The pickups have been rewound, are strong and fantastically loud
    [*]There is a small section of the pick guard missing. (This originally really upset me, so I bought a reissue 75' pick guard, but never fitted it. In the end, you get used to it)
    [*]The bass has had a refret. The frets are the chunky vintage type, but there are marks on the binding.
    [*]There is one spring on the bridge that has been replaced
    [*]One of the bridge screws is slightly damaged (although it still functions)

    Trade wise, I don't want anything really, but am always interested in vintage fenders. Stuff I want at the moment is a Telecaster Bass and a 70s Precision.

    Otherwise, cash is preferred.

    Based in Bristol but can travel should you want to meet up.

  2. The arm weight things is true, but learning DB (if you’ve come from an electric bass background) is a challenge. It is all about arm weight but your strain is going to be about building up some strength and stamina to be in what’s likely to be a new position and unlearning, to a degree. The habits and memories of playing electric bass.

    You need to spend time playing, it’s that simple. And I do too...

  3. Hi all, I've been given a set of love Evah Pirazzi upright bass strings, but there's no G string. I'm not even going to smile at that because I'm the grown up and it's the truth.

    Does anyone have a spare, used G (doesn't need to match) ?

    Any help gratefully received and I'll either swap something from my parts/music book draw or stump up some cold hard
    cash.

    Alternatively, if anyone has an old set of Spirocores, that's what I use on my upright, so could buy them...

    Agree 100%.

    In fact, the last deals I've done have all been in person. It's brilliant meeting Basschatters in person.

  5. Fantastic. I've got the Brun book and I agree it's fantastic. Its actually quite rare. I've not managed to track down the Elgar book yet, but I'm sure I will.

  6. When I used to claim mileage allowance for cycling this classed me (in my mind at least) as a professsional cyclist.

    I've played and recorded with professionals, was semi-pro for a while and it's all the same.

    It's the same as a sense of humour, if you have to demand a pro attitude it's likely you don't have it.

  7. Suggests on his Wikipedia page (100% reliable of course) that his tone was created by plucking then palm-muting. I find that hard to believe given the attack. I reckon it's a stick of foam under the bridge like Herbie Flowers and the UK session guys.

    It's a great sound though. Same sort of thing runs through the 60s funky Italian soundtracks. Also a lot of early Lalo Schifrin / west coast jazz has the same tone. Carol Kaye who played on a pot of this stuff definitely had a foam mute.
