There is nothing I would change about my DB (which is odd given my insatiable plank GAS) but a tasty set of those machines would be very lovely indeed. I have always hankered after a REALLY tasty set of machine heads.

A J and a P with a J nut. In matching Sonic Blue/white. Or Oly White/tort. Or Black/tort. Or Sunburst/tort. The irony is that I NEVER play 4 strings and should probably sell the J and P I do own.

Stream of consciousness early morning musing alert! I need wondering about a new preamp for Double Bass and bass guitar. for my own use. I have a J retro on a Jazz plate mounted in a metal box that does the EQ nicely. I would need enough clean gain for it to drive a power amp properly so guess that would need an extra stage of grunt. Output on DI level XLR + balanced jack to drive power amp. I would also like to incorporate a second channel using an fdeck HPf (which I also have) into it so that my piezo pickup on my DB gets buffered properly. It would be cool to have a passive roll off for the fdeck. I have never really had a need for EQ on my DB once the fdeck is on board, but I guess it would be nice to be able to patch into the J retro should the need arise. I am wondering about an FX loop running in parallel(?) with a vol control so that I can blend in fx/clean on a volume pedal depending on what the song needs. Also a normal FX loop. I understand that this would not be a thing of beauty but it would do what I want and simplify my set up. An overall mute with LED also please. I am umming and ahing about rack mounting or stomp box. If I went stomp box I would not need a breakout box for switching and ting. Is this doable by someone who actually knows that they are doing (I was thinking http://4114customeffects.co.uk/) Or I could get a Tech 21 VT deluxe which would seem to do a lot of this and is also programmable, but is rumoured to be a bit noisy. I cannot be doing with hiss. Are they mod-able to get a better signal to noise ratio?

I have been messing with a Mackie SRM350 10" cab recently. With a decent preamp it sounds WAY better than it has any right to.

I spent quite a lot of time trying to persuade him to build me a 35" 5 string 66 Jazz. He was having none of it because of the jigs.

See last post for ticket info. ........... might be playing with Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles in the UK towards the end of November. I have no idea of the regular line up and it might well be that he will not be the touring bassist, but he is in the band on various youtube vids so who knows. It will be worth going just to see Cory Henry and anyone he deems to be cool enough to play in his band.

Exciting times. I had a Bravewood P and it ticked all the same boxes as my 66J. It taught me that I do not like P width nuts, but that was hardly his fault.

I used to drive 1.6Kw into an Eden 410XLT (700w). I had headroom for days. I had authoritative LF heft. Don't even begin to worry.

Is there anything finer than CAR with a matching headstock on a Jazz?

I have had nothing but good experience from Gear 4 Music basses (4 of them) - because I was not expecting out of the box greatness. They need new strings, a fingerboard truing and possibly a new bridge. But any lower priced instrument is likely to need that. Would I buy from Ebay? Yes. If the price is right then there is space to have a luthier do magic.
