Oooh that does look good! Any idea what price bracket this is likely to be? Please do keep us posted!

Didn't really say a great deal, other than the Odyssey as it is now will work well on bass, but the new version more specifically tailored for bass use. Can only assume a similar bracket to the guitar version.

You might be pleasantly surprised by the drives in the HX and not necessarily need an outboard one. Most of them are guitar oriented, but since you have the ability to clean blend or even split the signal with crossover, you can work around those issues.

This is little dilemma I'm wrestling with. The plan is to get the HX first anyway and test before I delve into any further purchases. Thanks for the info.

  2. I've been researching a pedalboard overhaul to make way for an HX effects with an analogue drive to pair with it.

Reached out to Hamstead as their new Odyssey pedal looks great (need something that works for bass and guitar), and they hinted at something very interesting to come in the next few weeks...

  3. I love the thing, had one on my board for nearly 10 years. I have 2 uses for it; light ambience using reverb+delay algo during quiet passages, but also on delay setting 3 as a glitch looper.

Never struck me as losing any low end. Longer reverb/delay times can get a bit much.

I have a Timeline as well, but could never kick the RV-3 off my board.

  4. @radiophonic digitech hardwire reverb (predecessor to the polara) also has a good reverse reverb and may be cheaper second hand, although no longer in production.

The EHX cathedral has a reverse, and a hold switch with infinite reverb which is interesting.

Take a look at the old blood noise endeavours dark star, has bit crush, and octave up reverb that works well on bass (i've owned one, brilliant but upgraded to strymon timeline).

  5. Was initially unsure about compressors. Educated myself, realised it would solve issues I had with my P-bass (even signal and more sustain wanted). Bought a Walrus Deep Six (blend control and internal voltage boost to 18v deciding factors).

Plugged for 5 mins to test - issues immediately solved, but dynamics I need still present. More tweaking required, but instant pay-off.

Yup that looks like a really good choice. The Pigtronix unusually seems to have gone for a 'grit' instead of the more usual 'attack' which the Walrus and most other comps have. I'll be interested to see if that is actually a 'True Grit' a la Mr Eastwood or more in the nature of a bit of gravel...

Ovnilab.com does reference the grit switch found on the previous (larger) version of the pigtronix bass comp and he wasn't a fan of the character of it compared to the one found on the 'guitar specific' (although still usable on bass) version. This put me off a bit, but considering how they made improvements previously based on his input I wouldn't be surprised if this has been tweaked as well.

Fortunately I have drive options (EQD palisades and Green Russian Muff) so feature wasn't as important and justifying my impatience!

Just got a brand new Pigtronix

and first thoughts where its awfull, totally squashed and strangled all life out of the bass.

put it back in box to send back.

then i read instructions (doh) turns out i was using it all wrong, firstly plugged it into 9v rather than 18v (double doh) it will work at 9v but not properly, then i realised this is the first compressor that actually does what a compressor is meant to do and was not using it for what i want.

now i get it and after a bit of playing around got exactly what i wanted from it. Set the volume to match at unity with amp, had compression set at about 10 o clock, sustain at 8 o clock. And bingo, got a rounder more defined sound a little cleaner volume boost and slightly thicker warmer sound without loss if tone and more note definition its only subtle but noticeable. Had to increase compression to around 11-12 when using more heavy Fuzz. Finally got what i want and finally get it. Think most of the other ones i have had are not trully compressors. This actually does what a compressor is meant to do.

Theres a new Pigtronix coming out around 1st March:

That was my first thought too...

I would have thought for their first foray into the world of bass there would have been a balls out, fire breathing, all valve, loss leading, monster of a head with a ridiculously large cab, just as a statement of intent. This may be more practical, but it's a bit... safe...

When Blackstar first arrived on the scene I had them down as the brand who might take over from Marshall, early all tube design amps. Then they went down a major digital rabbit hole.
Probably makes sense for them to dip their toe into bass with a solid state platform first, maybe then we'll see a bassman clone/all tube design in the future if they feel the market would respond.

Personally whilst these look promising I love the simplicity and aesthetic of the rumble, these don't induce too much GAS for me.

The secret I found to the Rumble is that you drive the gain hard, mine's around 1'O clock with a passive P bass and you can get a bit of drive and throttle with that.

I use a Dark Glass vintage tubes as well sometimes for a bit more cut and harmonic over-drive.

fair play, I usually have my pre-amp gain at 11/12, maybe that's the answer!

appreciate the suggestions folks, keep them coming.

  10. Still very much on a tone journey with my Tokai P-style, Fender rumble 500 combo + earthquaker palisades. Looking for a good core overdrive tone but the palisades isn't quite doing it for some reason.
Recently recorded and used a SVT style plugin on Logic and loved the sound, obviously no substitute for the real thing but wondered if there were any recommendations for bass OD's on the cheaper end of the spectrum that might get me the ballpark sound I'm after.
