Hi gareth,
    Thanks for sharing.

Actually, there is a difference between Tribute and Artist. The Jazz bass Tribute is done by the custom shop. It has a relic look.

    So it is
1 - JB Jaco Pastorius Artist signature. It has a "Jaco" on the neck plate. It has not a relic look.
2 - JB Jaco Pastorius Tribute made by the Custom Shop. It has a relic look
3 - JB Jaco Pastorius Artist Series Custom Shop Tribute limited 100. It was in 1991 (the James Jamerson Precision Tribute was made at the same time). The basses this year had not a relic look. Both fretted and fretless were made in 100.
there is a tribute text written on the neck plate and a 100 limited serial number.

1 1 - JB Jaco Pastorius Artist signature. "Jaco" neck plate. not reliced.

2 - JB Jaco Pastorius Tribute made by the Custom Shop. relic look

3 - JB Jaco Pastorius Artist Series Custom Shop Tribute limited 100 only in 1991.

    thanks for explaining that

so to confirm that I had 1 1 - JB Jaco Pastorius Artist signature. "Jaco" neck plate. not reliced

as i said above it was an unremarkable bass

as others have said if you are looking for a fretless i would look elsewhere

just by having one of these - its not gonna make you sound like jaco

as ever its all in the hands :)

So it was on ebay - http://www.ebay.co.u...e#ht_500wt_1201

I got a message from the seller after I placed my bid - "Hi, I see you have bid on the Fender Jazz. Please read the item description carefully, and withdraw your bid. Thank You."

Then a message from ebay - "Dear eBay Community Member,
The bid that you entered for the item (280966608520) has been cancelled. You can view the reason provided for the cancellation by selecting the (bid history) link from the individual item page.

Please be cautious if you are contacted about purchasing this item after the bid has been cancelled and as always, avoid paying for your eBay item using instant wire transfer services through Western Union or MoneyGram as these payment methods are unsafe when paying someone you do not know.

    Regards,
    eBay "

The reason given was that the item is no longer available -

 Now it turns up here

    Strange

People can do what they want with their stuff, I'm sure they have others they play. If, by keeping them, it means others can play these vintage gems in another 20 years time, then its fine with me. If someone had a rare, historical instrument, worth £15k, and played it at the dog and duck on jam night, that could get irreversibly damaged at any moment, then that would be a bigger crime to me.
oh come on lets get real - these are musical instruments FFS - they are built to be played - its a crime to keep them in their cases - like keeping F40 ferraris off the race track

The large majority of the really rare vintage guitars & basses that are sold aren't bought my musicians, they're bought by rich professionals as investments. A lot of them probably never get played.
so true and so sad :(

Really well played mate! Excellent! My only titchy comment would be that I found your timing slightly urgent if that makes sense, I felt a little breathless listening. Otherwise, you have skill, tone and taste, sir!
yes i think its a bit hurried in places but nice notes

  8.
You need to pace youself more. Start somewhere and go somewhere else. Tell a story, as Lester Young said. You hit the ground running with your best licks and them just played some stuff that bore little relationship with what had gone before or what was going on around you. You can obviously play, now you just need to play something that matters.

I am being harsh. Your stuff is better than most of the stuff on here by a country mile but you could be a lot better if you focussed on the music and not on the instrument. The secret is not to impress but to express. Try again and play about 40% less. Actually, if you want to really try something difficult as an exercise, try and play a meaningful solo with only eighth notes, no sixteenths. Or try something like only playing a maximum of 7 notes a bar of any note value.
really really good points

i am in awe of your playing/technique and tone

but as someone once said .............. its the notes you leave out that matter................. so i agree with bilbo's comments

i particularly like the line - The secret is not to impress but to express.

this is probably an age thing

when you are young you are into technique and impressing

I have no problem with that but I still dont want to see a tribute for an act still touring really.
depends which act

i used to go and see the Illegal Eagles cos the real thing were only touring in the USA

  10. Here's my Neil Young and Crazy Horse Tribute band - Sedan Delivery - in the rehersal room with our new drummer (playing for the first time with the band)

Let me know what you think - hopefully not too degrading

They are, in my opinion, a future classic.

I don't see a huge difference between my American Vintage 75 reissue jazz and my Mexican Classic 70s jazz. I love them both though.

The necks are the same depth (I've measured them using vernier callipers).

The US bass has a nicer colour in the binding and better hardware and is definately a higher quality bass but at three times the price you'd expect that.

I'd say the classic 70s is a great series and well worth the money.

    Frank.

Ah ........... a man with taste and perception.

Just got one of these and its the bollox - and I say that after comparing it with all sorts of other jazz basses

    Just get one
