  1. A teacher is perfectly entitled to make that decision, and they have probably made it on the basis that there Are differences and they don't feel comfortable teaching what they don't know. I have never played an EUB, and I would say the same. I wouldn't teach you on that bass. It's not a snobbery thing. You should be grateful for their integrity

  2. DON'T whatever you do add weight to the ends of your bow. No pro player I know would recommend that, it will just make the bow completely unmanageable. Weigh it. If it weighs less than about 130 grams its a wee bit light, more than about 150 is heavy. Either way, it's not the problem. The problem is the strings. If you want strings that are good for slap, they will be rubbish for arco. Just the way it is. Part of it is setup, too, but mainly strings. Make your choice, live with it. Sorry, but that's the way it is. Bowing IS much harder than it looks, and using the wrong strings won't help.

  3. Bore oil, fingerboard oil, lemon oil, linseed oil, walnut oil all do the same job, pretty much. I don't need advice about what to clean my fingerboard with. I was just wondering if I could get some more of what I already have. Seems like the answer is either "no" or "here's the answer to a question you didn't ask". Internet...

What's the betting JPJ never played Lemon Song exactly the same twice!!?

He never plays anything exactly the same twice. For me, that's the appeal of Zeppelin. The feeling that even the songs on the albums are a captured moment. The looseness and freedom is always there

  5. I don't suppose for a second your bass still has the original fingerboard. Ebony seems to be very durable though, and If it is the original, it will have been oiled periodically.

Turpentine is almost certainly better than vodka....

You can get to grade 8 WITHOUT any theory.  I have to give this one student a crash course in basic harmony (grade 5 stuff) so they can play in the school jazz band.  Granted jazz and classical are completely different disciplines so it’ll be hard for them anyway, but no theory?  It should be compulsory to have grade 5 theory BEFORE doing grade 8 practical. 😡😡😡

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it IS compulsory to have Grade 5 theory for ABRSM Grade 6 and above. Trinity don't require any theory, which is why a lot of people pick Trinity. Of course you'll need to give some guidance before a classical double bass player can play in a "Jazz" band....

  7. Does anyone recognise this, and know if it's still available? I bought several cans around 30 years ago from a shop that was closing down. This is the last one, and it's so good that I'd love to have some more... It may well be neat linseed oil, but the can's pretty cool too! I'm a sucker for tradition......

  8. OK, think I'm going to have a hunt for something secondhand first, see what it does for me before committing serious money. I'm not one for the revolving door, as you may have guessed! I need to be sure before I buy an expensive one....Watch this space

  9. So.... for many, many years I've had a secret, perverse crush on the T bird. Looks, sound, image. Can't tell you why, it's a mystery to me. I have 3 very very fine basses that I love and that do everything I ever need them to do. But still, the T Bird is calling.... What should I do? Get an Epiphone Pro 4 and lose a few quid when I move it on? Or go the whole hog and have a "proper" Gibson? Or resist manfully as I always have?

    Help...

Thanks guys for your replies. If anybody has a set for of Kaplan Lights or Flexocor for 3/4 bass--GDAE-- they wish  to sell forward details. Send me a PM. Thanks.

I don't have any Kaplan Lights spare, but I do have a set of Kaplan Solo, tune them to orchestra pitch and you'll get very much the same sound and feel. How do I know? I've tried it! They're in the classifieds, almost new, let me know if you want them.
