1. Jeeeeeez, trade for a kidney? lol Seriously, Id be all over that if I had the money.
  2.
There are a million exercises that will make a difference and they will all work on some level. In my prime developmental period, my own regime was to play two octave scales in all keys and all modes followed by two octave chord tones up and down the neck in all modes and all keys. Took about an hour a day but I developed a lot of technique that way. I would really recommend that you learn to read the dots as soon as you can: a teacher is a good idea but F. Simandl's books or Rufus Reid's Evolving Bassist are good books to start with. When you have the rudimentary skills (i.e. you don't need to be able to sight read to do this), you can start transcribing bits of songs you like and to develop a vocabulary of your own. Then your playing will really start to improve. The very fact that you are even asking this question is indicative of a positive attitude to learning and you should be congratulated for that. The best piece of advice I can give is 'remember that the most difficult thing about finding your true path as a player is the realisation that you are already on it'. Everything of value that you will ever learn will come to you incrementally. There are a couple of things that may come to you as an epiphany but these are very few. Most things come from tedious repetition and, despite your protestations to the contrary, I would argue that just playing through scales at X bpm etc probably is working for you already, just not as quickly as you would like. Most things you learn in the practice room today won't appear in your playing for at least six months!Patience is of considerable value in learning an instrument, alongside the understanding that, if you haven't got that knot of frustration in your stomach as you practice, you probably aren't learning anything of value! You are on a wonderful journey that will last your lifetime. Enjoy.
You, sir, have just made my day! My problem has always been wanting to run before walking.. I want to be Palladino (or in my case Wilkenfeld..) and I may one day get there, but im just going to have to wood shed it a bit just like everybody else! I have obtained "New Method For String Bass" Simandl and a few others including "The Cycle of Self Empowerment" Dom Famularo. Do you think these will help? Many many thanks! Youve made a bass player more inspired! x
  3.
Mike is also the reason I picked up bass, so that is enough to keep him indoors! Any info would be great - as for his awkward playing in the Apollo in Feb, I think Mike looks fairly awkward when playing anyway - his trademark 'sitting on the bog' stance looks pretty uncomfortable to me but good god can he throw those basslines about. He is definitely my fave 5 string player, his use of the B is just right. An e-card sound like a cool idea... Cheers ped
I couldnt agree more! Whadda guy Lets sort out an ecard!
  4. Perhaps we should send a get well soon ecard from all of us on Basschat? SteveK would you be able to forward it to someone in the know?
  5.
A couple of months back I asked Luke the same question, he told me that Mike was in a fairly bad way and was pretty much unable to venture out of his front door or pick up his bass. Very sad!
This seems to be exactly what Simon said.. I could understand why he couldnt make the tour if its down to a hand injury, but to not be able to leave the house makes it a pretty hardcore hand injury.. Im sure Mike will fill us in in time but still, as he is the guy who inspired me, I want him to be ok!!
  6. OK, This might seem like a really weird question, but what is the best way to learn theory and technique and suchlike? Im trying to have an ass kicking moment of going back and learning all the stuff i conveniently decided to avoid... such as theory, harmony and technique but I am finding it really hard to get it to sink in.. Now i know that you should spend X amount of time during your regime to dedicate to scales/arpeggios etc but I just dont think I am going about it in the right way. I try to sit there and work through some scales but i end up thinking i know it and move on, but then I end up getting kicked in the ass for it later on! I mean, i know my major scale shapes, but I dont seem to be able to implement them effectively. Basically, I am asking for some advice on practicing theory/harmony that isnt just playing through scales at X bmp etc as that clearly isnt working for me! Any advice would be absolutely invaluble! Yours, A bassist in dire need! Lizzie
  7. Hi, this might seem random... I was wondering if anyone knew what was up with Mike Porcaro (bass Toto) I met Simon Phillips a few days ago and asked him how Mike was getting on with his "hand injury" and he said he wasnt good... Hes the guy that made me pick up the instrument in the first place so i was just concerned over his wellbeing. If anyone can shed some light then that would be cool! Im sure everyone here will join me in sending Mike the good vibes. Lx
  8. Im glad other people were a little disappointed by this supposed top 40.. my other half and I were having a bet on who would be no.1... Jaco? Palladino? Bernard Edwards? Jamerson? Levin? Apparently not... Cancel the subscription.. Bass Player is better anyways =0P hehe x

  10. Hey, I take it as its hard rock, a girl bass player probably wouldnt suit? Let me know tho =0)
  11. Hi, Ive got this Bartolini 9J-L1 J bridge pickup and i was wondering if anyone knew the dc output of them? Ive looked everywhere and cant find anything about it!
  12.
Ah well his grooving is enough for me, any soloing would ruin it for me
yeah i wouldnt really bother looking into his solo stuff.. What do people think of Tal Wilkenfeld?

    Hi y'all

    Hey Bremen, welcome =0)
  14.
Now that just sucks worse than Ricky Gervais!! Danyel played Modulus basses for a while, it might of been his Qauntum 6 he used exclusively on Un-Classified, because otherwise I've been seeing him use Lakland as of late, still he is highly underrated amongst other bassists, I bought Un-Classified just by going on his intro to I Need Love Everyday, and I'm glad I did .
I know!! I checked out his myspace tho and his solo stuffs not that hot. A bit like boyz2men lol! I bought it based on the bass intro to Squeeze! Love it! And yes, missing them did suck!
  15.
Can't wait to see pics of that Stage II Lizzie!! Also your one of the very few people on here that are fans of Robert Randolph and The Family Band, fantastic taste
Man, that dudes awesome! I specifically went to hard rock calling the other weekend jsut to see him (well, Danyel Morgan...lol) and every single train me and my other half went on was delayed. We both got there jsut as his set was ending. I was sooooo pissed off lol! But im sure he will be back in the UK soon. Does anyone know anything? But what can i say, Im a sucker for slap and groove. Cant help it! lol I think Danyel playes a 6 string but I dont know what make.. Gotta show the love for Tal Wilkenfeld too, being a girl and all!
  16. Kinda interesting to see if our tastes differ to the boys!
  17.
Wines not as popular with the mass's as it used to be. Water into Sambuca draws a bigger crowd these days.
Im sure it will make a comeback.. Either that or you could corner a new market, water into beer!
  18. What about that water into wine stuff? I bet you get invited to all the parties!
  19. Hey, Im a 'resting' bass player who is sick of being in a band solely with a computer! I would very much like to play with musicians who are at least alive and breathing. That would be nice! I am competant at most styles of music (im working on the jazz and fusion lol!) seriously seriously committed to anyone i play with, pro active and a good laugh to be in a band with! I have my own transport and gear and even a PA if necessary so if this appeals to you, get in touch! I have a Myspace and check out my old band Miss Lardyda for a vague idea of my playing style. Cheers Lizzie
  20. Hey can anyone recommend an amazing bass teacher in the Maidenhead/Windsor/Bracknell area? You know when you just come to a point where you need someone to direct you a little bit? Well, thats me! Your help would be much appreciated! Lizzie x
  21.
Normally capacitors on the volume pot are design to stop treble roll-off as you reduce the output volume. The most common value for these is 0.001uF rather than .1uF
what does the uF part mean? and thanks for your advice! =0)
  22.
Im new too, and in a few short days i've dwindled far too much of my time away reading these pages, learning, GAS-ing, learning, GAS-ing, GAS-ing, and debating the correct use of Jobseekers Allowance. People seem cool, and the banter light hearted. I like it, welcome! Jesus (Deano)
Nice to meet you Jesus =0) x
  23. Hi guys, I recently put a set of bartolini 8s in a pbass project i have going on at the moment and have been very happy with them! But on the schematic that came with the pickups it says you can have a capacitor on the volume pot as well as the tone pot, so i bought a new/old stock 60s .1uf capacitor and soldered it on. But now whenever i roll the tone pot to full the bass totally cuts out and it sounds really muddy and all bass no treble. Can anyone help?
  24.
Birds eye maple eh?
Indeed. Thousands of tiny birds died in the making of my PBass neck.
  25.
Welcome, L1zz1e, can't wait to see your 'new' Precision.
