It has a 1.5" nut, like a standard Jazz, and definitely feels less chunky than any other Precision I've played (though my experience of them is very limited).

Brilliant cheers, they've now move a bit closer to the top of the list.

Now I need to decide if I can live with the surf pearl or whether I want to pay an extra £70 odd quid for a white one which I will definitely find more aesthetically pleasing.

  2. I keep it achored on the E unless I'm playing on it, in which case I either rest my palm on the body of the bass or I sort of rest my wrist on the top edge of the basses body.

I'm self taught though and have several 'bad' habits.

    I hate you!
Now I can't 'unsee' that...

I was going to go with P-Ray but I didn't want it to be mistaken with a religious message.

I'll do my best to forget what you said... but the bass is already ruined for me :P

    Sorry about that.

I did wonder if I should mention it, but I have very poor impulse control.

I played one of those "surf pearl" ones in a shop and it was great. Looks amazing too. I ended up going for a standard P as I didn't really want the bells and whistles (J pick up, active electronics). That said, you can (I think) switch between active and passive, so you have the best of both worlds. In short, a great sounding and feeling bass (the one I played, anyway), with a very striking finish.

    I very interested in these.

Would you say the neck is a standard precision or a Jazz?

Or maybe somewhere between the two?

I've decided to treat myself to a new PJ in January and these are pretty near the top of my list of potentials.

sorry Cato, possibly the worst Ramones track ever
    [/quote]

    Fair enough.

It's a bit of a departure for them, and I have wondered if Joey was the only actual Ramone on that particular track, but personally I think it's close to the pinnacle of the Phil Spector collaboration, surpassed only by Rock 'n' Roll radio. (Honourable mentions for Danny Says and Rock 'n' Roll high school).

    Edit.

Maybe this Ramones cover is more up your street?

  6. Funnily enough I had my first go on a cello on boxing day.

After getting my head round the tuning difference it was actually fairly easy to get a tune out of, finger style only of course, I reckon bowing is probably a whole art in itself.

It's made me seriously consider trying a proper double bass, or at least a EUB, at some point in the near future.

  7. After 25 odd years of playing bass and skinny string guitars, but never in front of my family, after an impromptu boxing day jam with various brother in law's and friends of the family(who to be fair have only been playing for a fraction of that time), it turns out that they're quite impressed with my skills.

No problem, thanks for correcting me.

In terms of value and utility. Hell, my Gibson Les Paul Gold Top bass and my Gibson Custom Shop ES-335 bass cost quadruple the price of my G&L ASAT. However my G&L sees the lion's share of my gigs.

Granted my LP and ES-335 are the coolest looking basses on the planet,IMO. And I only use them for their looks.

    Horses for courses.

I like your MIJ 50s Precisions a lot, but if was to choose one bass from your collection, based purely on aesthetics, I'd take the ASAT every time.

  9. I'm going to risk what little cred I have by saying I quite like his most recent stuff.

He's been responsible for some utter sh*te as well but I think underneath the teen idol image (which he apparently has come to loathe) is a better than average vocal and song writing talent. There's also Youtube evidence that he's a decent guitar player.

    While we're on definitions:
Joolzolland: an artist who's talent falls far short of the esteem in which the public and major broadcasters hold him.

    Don't mock the afflicted.

His compulsion to a boogie woogie piano accompaniment to absolutely any piece of music, from classical to hip hop, is a serious medical condition.

  11. I seem to remember someone advertising 4 to 5 string conversion kits in guitar mags in the early 90s.

    Maybe someone still makes them?

Not sure I see the point though.

Back then 5s still weren't that common and they tended to be a lot more expensive than 4 strings of the same model.

These days they're easily obtainable and normally only a fraction more than the equivalent 4 string.

A two fret stretch between index and second fingers. :o

    +1

Look at the spread on her left hand.

I'd struggle with that and I've got massive hands.

    Superb playing.
