  1. If you get the chance practice with a drum machine or find some beats online to play along with.

If you can't do that before the jam, don't stress.

Locking in with a drummer, as long as he/she is halfway competent comes pretty naturally (although it can be improved the more you get to know your drummer).

Keep your lines simple at first and my guess is you'll probably click by the end of the first song. Enjoy, it's a fantastic feeling.

  2. If you google 'sub ray preamp clipping' you should get a few links to various threads on Talkbass and others discussing the hot preamp issue. It's a well known phenomenon with these basses and there's also a few solutions discussed.

The string rattle is a separate problem and could be caused by anything from the nut to the bridge and everything in between, including uneven frets or a truss rod issue.

  3. It depends how pedantic you want to get.

Maximum pedantry (and accuracy) would have to define an acoustic band as one that uses no amplification at all.

However I don't think it's overly fraudulent for a band that tries to replicate the sound & spirit of acoustic instruments whilst actually being amped up (as happened in just about every episode of 'MTV Unplugged' ) to describe themselves as 'acoustic'.

    Waddyareckon? The audiences love it.

Maybe it's just the next step in the evolution of the grand tradition of the manufactured band/artist?

Since the birth of pop music there have always been 'artists'who serve as the visual reference point for a brand but who have little or no input into the music released in their name.

Replacing actual humans with animations as the face of the brand isn't that big a leap.

Mannnn that sonic grey Jazz really is one of the nicest looking instruments I've ever seen.

Some contrast to the worst hairstyle I've ever seen...

The hair is supposed to be a bass clef, though I thought she'd stopped wearing it like that some time ago in favour of something more conventional?

Maybe she's decided it's her unique trademark?

  6. OK I've just double checked and I think I was wrong about the name being bought out.

It also appears that some of their products are still made in the UK whilst others are designed here and built in China.

I always thought Laney was an affordable budget line amp. Did they ever have a reputation as a high end performance bass amp?

Don't know about bass amps but for a while, in the 70s their valve guitar amps were rivals to Marshall.

But I think the name was bought out and production moved out of the UK many years ago.

I agree about the 60s and 70s bit however, I was kind of referring to the fairly well documented fact that he wrote no music and possibly provided a few lyrics though in fairness, the term "icon" doesn't dictate that you have to create, simply be, an icon.

Most of Elvis' songs were written by other people, most of Cliff's too.

I'm just playing devil's advocate here, but , unfortunately, sometimes it's charisma and marketing that make the big records big.

  9. I'm not a huge fan of Mr Williams, but in his defence he won a shed load of Brit awards and has had a very successful career, with a chart record, both singles and albums, that's not been matched by many.

Not every celebrated 'musician' (and I use the year loosely) can come from the 60s and 70s, things have to move on.

No matter how much we may disapprove.

It's annoying that there seems to be nothing on the fender website about these. Or am I not looking right?

P.s. The sonic grey jazz is a thing of beauty

I'm not at all impressed with new Fender website in general and I'm fairly sure there are a few models from the current range either not listed or at least not listed where they can easily be found.

  11. The vocal on this one sounds ever so slightly off pitch to me.

I can't decide whether it actually is or whether I just don't like her voice.

I have the same thing with just about every Christina Aguilera track I've heard, when she goes for the big, powerful note she just sounds out to me.

    ...and I cannot lie...etc.

Sorry. Extra coat, please, it's very cold out.

I came within an inch of posting that.

I can't even find a decent cover version on YouTube to enlighten those unfamiliar with the song.

    Now dead flats, carry on...

Interestingly, according to the article, none of that seems to be related to music.

He's a very shrewd business man.

I thought that was Nick Mason.
    [/quote]

    Definitely Richard Wright.

Waters decided he wasn't pulling his weight so sacked him from the band, then reemployed him on a wage as a session musician.

Ironically this resulted in Wright being the only band member who didn't end up taking a fairly hefty financial hit after the ruinously expensive Wall tour.

Thanks. Green was the first one I bought.
No love for Automatic...? I think it's brilliant.

I loved Automatic for the People.

I spent quite a lot of time as a student listening to 'Try not to breathe' whilst feeling moody and misunderstood.
