  1. Amp and bag in mint condition with everything looking, working and sounding as it should. Designed and built in California, these really are an excellent piece of kit all round but the variable on-board HPF and high/low boost controls deserve a special mention.

Price excludes delivery but happy to meet up for handover anywhere within reasonable distance from Taunton. Alternatively will box in original packaging for collection provided buyer arranges and pays for courier delivery.

I could probably run to a Sterling Ray SS without too much drama but the word from my EBMM fanatic 'colleague' tells me that full fat EBMM is the only way to go.  Not having played either (and not much chance of finding a EBMM in a physical shop...) I wouldn't know.

Sorry, my mistake - I was referring to my SBMM 'Ray. I've had the posh expensive one too and have to agree with your colleague. Mind you, IMHO the difference in ownership experience doesn't reflect the massive price differential. The SBMM version is real value for money.

Currently getting a hankering to look at a EBMM Ray SS but it would mean having to lose one of my current shorties - don't ask but it keeps me out of the divorce courts.  Problem is I like all three of my current shorties; the mental G&L Fullerton Fallout, the JMJ Mustang and my Mikey Way Mustang which has done about 300 gigs with me (and looks the part in the Glam Band).  First world problems eh?

Had a lovely white s-s 'Ray that was very comfortable to wear, a nice player and sounded great.

Come to think of it, why did I sell it? Disposing of it virtually amounted to a criminal offence. "Before sentencing, I'd like 27 similar offences taken into account m'Lud!"

Those Acinonyx are gorgeous things. I’ve been on the verge of buying one since they first appeared. And I’m quite happy to see they’re still cranking them out. So one of these days the inevitable will be inevitable.

I'm tempted too, especially by the V2 with 3 p'ups and single row of push-buttons.

I can’t comment on Serek (other than to say I find them very attractive) but have played and owned a number of Wilcocks. I found some surprising (to me) variation between the Wilcocks. None with serious flaws or issues but different in terms of feel and playability. Of the two I’ve owned, despite looking very similar, one is amongst the most comfortable basses I’ve played (very light, super-low buzz-free action) and the other was just a very good shortie. Not as spectacular as the first. I’ve found fit and finish to be about as good as anything you’d find on a UK custom bass in this price-range.

For a custom/boutique builder, that inconsistency is a little worrying - to me at least!!

Yes, I own three Serek Midwestern 2's and a Wilcock Mullarkey.

The fit, finish and feel of Serek is flawless.

My Mullarkey (custom build): Hmm. Where I felt, Willcock let themselves down was the neck, there were 'keen' / sharp edges on the neck and this was a disappointment  So disappointed that I nearly sold it on - I didn't and spent some time having the neck worked on. The electrics were noisy too, but as part of a cure, when I shielded it, I  changed the pick-up wiring from three way switch to VVT.

In my experience the buying experience of the Willcock  was weird. Typically clipped one line email replies, that didn't leave me excited to place another order. One defence of Wilcock here is they are a busy shop etc. However, when I dealt with Jake Serek, at the time he was a 'one man band' over two of his custom builds. I was treated like an old friend, aside from import taxes, I wouldn't hesitate to buy from him again.

12 months on, living with and flipping between Serek and Wilcock basses. I've got over myself the buying experience now forgotten - (your post triggered me). I play both; now they're just basses from different builders and I like both a lot.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for that! I too am a potential owner of either a Wilcock or a Serek, although probably second-hand (if I live long enough for one or other to come up FS!!)

Not impressed by your comments on the Wilcock though - IMHO completely unacceptable for what they cost. By chance, I played one the other day and liked it a lot, albeit a single pick-up version and I'd need two. Didn't notice any sharp edges anywhere. I assume we talking fretboard or headstock edges here. Playability-wise, I'd put it up there with the excellent s-s Sandberg Lionel I owned for a while and should have kept.

Hi , not sure how to pm you!
    Ali

Just place your cursor over BCH's profile pic at the top left corner of this topic and select message envelope from the drop-down. This opens a pm to BCH.

I've bought several basses from Bernard and played this one at his house before it was FS. It's something really special and Bernard is a proper Basschat-er.

It looks like a regular Thumb body with a shorter neck bolted on. At one time, I think Warwick offered several scale options for their bolt-on Thumbs at an additional cost. I have only ever seen one for sale, however, and have never heard one. This makes buying an unreturnable and quite expensive instrument more speculative than usual.

If you buy and it doesn't suit you, PM me IMMEDIATELY!!! 🤞

I have one, and a ‘69 Mustang (purchased through the forum a decade or so ago). Even though the Pony is clearly based on a Mustang (and this is true of Vincent’s P and J basses also), there are some really clever design features which make them quite different instruments. They are incredibly even across the entire fretboard, and I find the zero-fret (instead of a nut) makes the open strings feel very controlled (and it opens up some interesting muting possibilities of the open strings with the left hand which aren’t possible with a regular nut). The honey-combed body makes the bass incredibly light in weight, and amazingly resonant (which is noticeable playing the instrument unplugged). The bridge gives you the option of traditional string mounting (ball ends through the back of the bridge), or they can sit through the bridge within the base on a piece of wood which is connected to the body to further increase resonance (their website could explain this much better than I’m doing!)

For me, the best way to describe Vincents in general is having the dna of classic Fenders, but being a very modern/stable/consistent instrument at the same time. And they’re beautifully crafted (by hand), with all woods and metal (except for the neck) sourced local to their workshop.

Out of the gate, the vintage Mustang has more low end heft and general bassy gooeyness (this could also be the 12 year old strings), but the Pony has a more modern attack/articulation (without been like an active bass, obviously), and you can dial in that extra low end after the fact with EQ/saturation if you want it. My Fender has over 50 years on the Pony (and their construction and components really are very different) so it’s a little unfair to compare, but the Pony totally stands up, and even does some things better. I’d definitely check one out if you were curious!

Here’s a little video I made for Vincent after I received the bass.. full disclosure I purchased one of their P-type basses and loved it so much I got in touch with them to ask if they’d make a Mustang-esque instrument. Turned out they’d already been planning to do so. They sent me this one when it was ready and I did a little testing for them, and didn’t want to send it back so ended up buying the bass.

Thanks for that informed and useful feedback - just the kind of info we like the best 👍

I have been having  pain in my left hand third finger for a while now on & off, so I have gone back to using my 1964 Hofner 500/1 bass as my main player. I've owned this bass for the past 35 years and the neck is pencil thin & feels so nice to play in comparison to my, Hofner HCT 500/1 which has a 42mm nut width & thicker neck and feels totally different to the '64 500/1.

McCartney was one of my main men (along with Jamerson, Fraser and Bruce) in my formative years and I've been itching to get a H violin bass ever since. Still not managed it but came close with a HCT Club, which I didn't like much and sold on.  Your post is timely as I've recently been considering the HCT Beatle bass, mainly from the price/quality point of view. Not sure what the neck was on my Club but, if it was the chunky 42mm version, that could be the reason I didn't get on with it. Is that neck common across the HCT models?

  11. I'm a massive Eden fan and have owned several of their heads including this one. I ran mine through an 8ohm BF One10 and I'm sure this will do just as good a job plus a few more dBs. I would have snapped it up myself if I hadn't just bought a Rumble 100 combo at around the same price. To be honest I would have preferred this.

I too spent a while looking for the 500W version but never found one.

you can order one now. email me [email protected] and i can help you with your order.

Well done for jumping on this topic! I'm considering adding a fretted V2 to my collection and it's good to see someone from Nordstrand reaching out across the pond. We know that you have UK distribution via Bass Direct but, like most distributors, they are just a stock-holding operation rather than a dynamic sales/marketing/promotional organisation. As a prospective customer I need to feel some kind of direct link with the manufacturer.

  13. Pleased to see that the performance of my Ampeg SVT-7 PRO in Sunday's amp shootout appears to have generated at least one enquiry for the one listed FS on here. I've kept revisiting the ad and wondering why on earth it's still there! It was getting to the point where I was considering buying it myself as a back-up. I think these are superb amps.

Ditto. Such a brilliant day out is worth more than mere money.

Most kind and generous but it's all under control, honest 😊.  When I get a minute, I'll send a PM to the pre-paid no-shows offering them either a refund or FOC entry for next year. I'm pretty sure the latter will be the majority choice.

Also: @scrumpymike, did the whole day break even in the end? If not, I and I'm sure others will be ready to stick my hand in my pocket to make up any shortfall.

Yes, we broke even with enough left over to pay for the customary post-bash Chinese take-away treat for the event team at our house - provided the few pre-paid DNAs don't ask for their money back 😐

  16. I had the pleasure of playing this bass at our S-W Bass Bash last Sunday and can confirm that it is a delight.

If you are into short-scale basses, like the look of this one, and have the necessary cash to spare - don't hesitate to buy! I would have taken it home myself if I'd had the funds available.

Btw, Kate bought a bass from me a while back and she's a proper, reliable Basschat-er - or should that be Basschat-euse?! ☺️
