Are we honestly whining about Coldplay and Nickelback on the Internet still? What is this? 2005? You guys are miles off the pace.

No, you hard of hearing fool, we're doing naked spaghetti macramé specifically to avoid being on the pace.

  2. I loved Wals so much back in the eighties, mainly because Mick Karn played one and Paul Raven. I remember playing Paul’s a few times at rehearsals and thinking that I’d finally played a grown up bass, they were the few times I’ve ever tried one and I remember deciding they weren’t for mortals like me. It would be interesting to try one now I’ve grown up!

  3. I must admit I have a totally unfounded and, in analysis, irrational reaction to Nickleback despite never having heard a track nor seen a performance. I think I can trace my prejudice down to having heard them described as ‘Mum Rock’ and indeed knowing two Mums who like them. However, my mum (*spits, dances on grave* capitalisation withheld) liked Frank Sinatra, David Bowie and preferred The Rolling Stones to The Beatles yet I don’t refer to any of those as Mum *insert genre here*. I have heard a couple of Coldplay tracks which left me unmoved in any way, I cannot understand their popularity (but don’t begrudge them it) any more than I cannot understand the vociferous reaction to them, alright they don silly garb and consciously uncouple from partners but they do seem to illicit a reaction far more hostile than their banality deserves.

  4. Having had such a bad experience last Thursday I was worrying about playing again but during today’s rehearsal my compadre suggested we looked to see what was happening locally this evening. It just so happened that an open mic night was being held at The Railway so we threw the guitars in the car and went down on spec. Well we had a total gas, a very eclectic group of performers doing varied covers, Fame, Where Do You Go To My Lovely, Word Up a pianist and a drummer just jamming this Latin jazz groove, so cool. We went on midway through proceedings and did a couple of our songs and played them much better than last Thursday. The organiser dude said at the beginning of the night “I’ll try and rustle you up something to put the bass through...” I’ve been struggling to get the sound I want out of the AER lately but tonight, when I got on the stage I plugged into this...

...the sound was (after a very minor tweak) just lovely. I dunno, amps. Monday night at The Railway, what a gas.

Europe is not a place to tread in one's moccasins without careful deliberation. Especially with so many doggie lovers! (Of course I mean that in the most innocent of terms.)

I find a pair of light pink ballet shoes are just the ticket when tiptoeing across the endless carpet of animal faeces that threatens to overwhelm the major urban conurbations in Europe.

Would you encourage "your" friend to start playing a bass guitar at 60 and join a band?

I would indeed, if he wished too, obviously there are things to consider and watch out for, hence reasoned advice but, yes, of course.

There are far, far better things to be done in one's twilight years...

Sure, if that’s your choice, all of which, no doubt, have pitfalls and things to avoid but, like playing bass, alone or with others, can be a wonderful thing to do too.

For me, playing bass is a legacy issue. After 50 years I can't stop now. I still have my fretless '69 PB. There's still DNA on the fingerboard from the summer of '69...

That’s great, excellent in fact, I’m still 100% behind the op doing his thing.
