1. Quick update for anyone that is interested. Martin removed the fretboard and took a look inside the neck at the headstock end. I may explain this wrong (so apologies) but it would seem that the thread on the truss nut had completely worn so he has replaced this with a new one. Here are some pictures which may give some clarity as to what has happened and how he has repaired it so far. As you can see on picture 4, the old piece has no thread in at all (the left one) compared to the new one. This is why the nut was spinning when the truss was being adjusted. He is quite confident that with the humidity having being taken out of the bass and with this repair that it should now be all ok! He did this Friday and all is well so far. He is going to put the fretboard back on today and re-lacquer and polish areas where the bass has been repaired then we are good to go. Almost there!!! Fingers crossed I should have my pride and joy back early January. Again I'll keep everyone updated for those that may care. There are about 10 in the Imgur album for anyone that wants to see all the pics. http://imgur.com/a/z2q40/all
2.
Is this the buckeye Infinity or Streamer? I can't believe those repair costs and the attitude. Warwick prices are what they are new and people pay them, however surely no-one is paying those prices for repair. I bet Martin will sort it, however if he doesn't out of principle I would never consider commissioning Warwick for the work.
It's the Infinity. Here is the bass in question for anyone that is interested.
3.
Was this the same bass?
No!
4.
I do like Warwick custom shop's work, but I would never pay those prices. If they need that much markup and can afford higher margins at the expense of lower sales volumes, that that is their business decision and if they remain profitable then it is viable. What I don't see however is swarms of satisfied custom shop customers stating how great everything is, i sure do see a lot of 2nd hand custom shop basses for sale at massive losses though.
I thought I'd add.. This is a topic I started last year.. Might be worth adding a warning label on their instruments. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/243973-want-to-see-what-an-ebay-seller-regarded-as-a-small-neck-twist/page__fromsearch__1
5. So, I just received a very long email from Hans himself! To cut a long story short, he explained that the instrument was 9 years old (don't get this considering the supposed build quality) and Warwick can't be held responsible for how the bass is kept when it leave them. I kind of appreciate that and I understand the amount of work involved.. It was just the extortionate prices that I was concerned with! He has offered me a 25% discount on the costs of the repair (which makes you wonder how much they mark-up is being made on the repair in the first place) but I suppose if the worst comes to the worst and Martin can't sort it then 3000 euros is better than 4000 euros. I will ask that everybody on this forum crosses their fingers for me and hopes that Martin can work his magic!
6.
I'd send a link to this thread to their marketing dept. and see what happens
Might be worth a try. Although from what I have heard about Warwick I'm sure things are not going to be changing anytime soon.
7.
So that's the Custom Shop after sales care? Awful customer service.
Shocking isn't it?! Put me right off ordering another one next year.
8. Just for the record I love Warwicks... I just don't understand how they can justify the price of an instrument like this almost doubling in 6-7 years. I bought a standard Corvette back in 2004 which cost me about £800. They're over 2k now!! I genuinely believe Warwick just don't want to repair this so therefore have high-priced me out of a repair. The good news is Martin is going full steam ahead so should have an update end of the week.
9.
What does "squiffy" mean? +1 for Martin at the Gallery.
Apologies should have explained before. The neck has been moving about at the slightest of temperature changes and there was not a lot of tension in the neck. The truss rod was very stiff also. I sent it off to Martin and he left it in a humidity chamber as the bass was in the Carribean before and may have been holding lots of humidity, thus the movement in the neck. Since taking out of the chamber it has started to back-bow with strings on it again and the truss now has no effect on the neck.
10. Martin currently has the bass so I'm hoping he can work some magic.
11.
Or you buy a used Corvette and use the neck from that? Not the same finish, I grant you that, but at least the bass isn't a write-off.
This could be an option if all else fails. Has anyone ever turned their through-neck into a bolt-on on here in such a way?
12.
What I want to know, is who's buying the German Warwicks at these prices. There must be some people out there paying 4k for a SS2 new?! 3.5k for an Infinity. Utter madness.(Love Warwicks for the record)
Luckily both of mine were second-hand purchases but were both still hefty amounts. What makes me ever more sad about this is that I sold my lovely Zon Sonus Custom 6 string to fund this a few years back. Wish I'd kept it.
13. "Hi James, I sadly cannot offer you any of those options, as we only restore the instrument, we do not modify it. So if it came in with high gloss finish, we will only send it back with high gloss, if it came with LEDs, we’ll install new LEDs etc. If you’d prefer a different finish, LEDs etc., then maybe a good local luthier would be a good option? Best Regards, David" Fantastic customer support there. It's such a shame I love their basses so much as they are such money-grabbing bastards nowadays. Anyone got a Fodera I could try?
14.
That is insane. It's a complete rip-off and frankly I'd tell them to sit on it and swivel. How much would a new one cost?
About £8500.... They have me by the balls.
15.
Something I'm curious about is why are there 2 handling charges. Also, I would have thought the "Sanding of the whole bass and new Natural High Polish" was optional. It's a good chunk to take off the bill too. Good luck on getting a good result.
I've asked them if all the other work is necessary so will see what nonsense they come back with this time. I'll update when I have a response.
16.
Who actually pays these prices?!
It's ridiculous isn't it?! The LED system being refitted is 1707 euros? Sims will install them for £500!!! I just have to hope that Martin can repair it otherwise I'm screwed.
17. One of my Warwick custom shops has been a bit squiffy in the neck department recently and is currently off being looked at by the marvellously talented Martin at Sims LEDs. In the meantime I thought I would contact Warwick as a worst case scenario and get a quote for a truss repair in case it needed to go back to them. The truss may not be broken but I just thought I'd get a quote in case it does need to be changed. This morning I was presented with their repair cost which was slightly 'interesting' to say the least.
18. I think this is my full list. Not a lot but I'm happy with what I play generally. I currently own the ones underlined. 19. Whyyyyyyyyy... I have just managed to get my savings back to where they were before and then this happens. Must resist temptation.
20. Sold Sean a Gallien Krueger head and it was a very easy transaction. There was a slight unexpected issue (which was my fault) with the item when it arrived with Sean but he was understanding and very easy to deal with. We came to a solution very easily and which both parties were happy with. Was a pleasure to deal with and would recommend highly.
21. It won't stop me buying a bass but I have suffered with back problems all my life and I have to be particular with the straps I use. IT can also give me shoulder problems too so have to make sure my posture is ok whilst playing.
22. If that's the case Mapp then yeah it must have died somehow. HEre is my power supply and seems to be the same as the polarity on the pedal? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Guitar-Effects-Pedal-10-Way-Power-Bank-Supply-For-Guitar-Effects-Pedals-9V-DC-/371258493816?hash=item5670bb0b78:g:jcsAAOSwpDdU3i4P Thanks for the offer but I'm in sunny Devon! Will have to find someone around here
23. Great thanks. I think what you said has happened for sure as I had a bit of a mare with my pedal board on Saturday night. I'll try and find someone local who does pedal repairs.
24. Yes. Nothing at all.
25. Thanks for the help. I just gave the pedal a try as you suggested and still nothing. I also tried with a battery and still have nothing. Is this likely fried?
