Heard there's a special run of the Japanese reissue ones on their way soon, more 'reissue' in style, over a grand though.

    Not sure.

I would imagine that after shipping and taxes it's going to be a lot more than a grand when it lands on these shores.

Think he needs to see someone about his memory problems too. How you can forget maker and preamp make after only three years seems strange. Looks a bit like a Sadowsky.

Can't say i've ever seen a Sadowsky anything like that.

  3. Many BCers probably know this but i've just found how to tell if your guitar or bass is made of plywood without taking the neck or pickguard off.

Put instrument in car and leave over night in freezing temperatures. In morning get instrument out of car and put in warm room. If it's plywood you'll see on the side of the guitar as the condensation forms the lines of the laminate clearly in the condensation.

  4. The bassesbyleo forum is excellent. If you want an old G&L i wouldn't hang around too long. With the vintage Fender and Musicman prices going through the roof it's going to push the price of old G&Ls up. I have my eye on a nice early 1980s L1000 right now. :)

It's actually a post Gordon Smith Gordy Blueshift. They are very nice basses but I think this is a little overpriced for such a niche instrument. They made headless basses too - similar to Status. There is a thread on here about them somewhere. Edit he actually gives the link in the listing.

I was actually looking for a Gordon Smith bass but have seen more Gordys recently than GS basses.

Wow, complicated stuff. I just skimmed it but even so the convoluted variety seems endless.

Yes it is! I found that website when i was looking for a Squier Strat and had to read it a few times to work it all out. But it is a fascinating read.
If you think that's complicated have a look at the article on Korean Squiers on that website!

P.S. I had an E series Squier Strat many years ago and it was great. Really amazing value for the money. Wish i still had it!

Plus there's a strong perception that the 1990s were their best times and things went wrong after Eggle quit. There's a link in the patrickeggleguitars, org site to a fan forum, so maybe register there and ask about the basses?

Yes they really pushed their guitars and basses in the early 90s. Project Music had stacks of them at knockdown prices at that time. They must have sold loads but you rarely see them nowadays.

Worth is an interesting concept, but a lot of people will pay a lot of money for a MIJ Squier. *Personally* I find Japanese instruments to be the best available, and presently own 4 - my MIJ strat is still my number 1, but that's Fender badged, rather than Squier.

In your position I'd want to play them both, then select the one I liked best.

Be very careful - despite all the nostalgia and 'lawsuit era' reverie, I've seen both E series Jap and MIK strats with ply bodies. Whip off the covers and have a poke about before paying!

Thanks to both of you for the info. I've done so much searching on the web it was beginning to scramble my brain!

Since seeing both MIK and MIJ ranging between £200-£350 i'm not sure whether a new Classic Vibe might be another option. They seem to get good reviews.
