1.
I wonder could you send a collective vote of thanks from BassChatters, might encourage him to pop in from time to time. Great to have input from that calibre of musician.
Good call jakesbass; let's get some big hitters on board.

  2.
Just got this from ebay a couple of days ago...
Did you snag a bargain? If so, how much did you shell out for it; if you don't mind me asking?

I've got a tribute L2500 myself, identical to yours other than a maple fretboard! I like the natural finish.

  3.
What's with the 'HiMass' bridges though?
The latest American Standards have the HMV (high mass vintage) bridges, so maybe squier are trying to make their wares resemble their well-heeled bretherin a little more closely.
The HMV bridge must surely be an improvement over the bog standard 'bent plate' bridge on the normal squiers.

  4. That jazz looks flipping sweet! I can see my arsenal of cheap(ish) basses growing yet again.
Squier will be happy if they're as well received as the vintage modified series.

Has anyone got any prices on these yet?

**edit: $299 seems to be the figure bandied around online regarding prices. I can't wait.**

  5. When you know the part well enough to play it in your sleep, then you'll be about as well prepared (musically) as you're going to be. The nerves will subside as you get more used to playing in front of audience.

On a different note, I always take a bottle of water to glug on, and a beer towel to mop up when I accidentally pour it all over myself.

    Good luck.

  6.
That's just what I don't want to read having just bought a Squier Affinity!
I wouldn't get too hung up over it. The lead guitarist in my old band got a squier affinity tele for £109 new, and it played/looked/sounded really good. It immediately took over as his main axe; he had guitars costing three times what his squier did!

If you've got a good squier (like my mate) be happy about it. A useable bass for not that much dough is what we all want.

  7.
Hey guys, does anyone have or have you experienced the Sadowsky outboard preamp/di pedal? I'm ordering a new American Standard Precision soon & was thinking of the Sadowsky outboard pre instead of messing with the bass adding preamps, etc.
There's quite a few pedal preamp/DI boxes out there. Obviously the sadowsky is at the nicer end of things, but have you considered John East's STMP-01 for about £30 less than the sadowsky? It has more bells and whistles than the sadowsky, although that may not be what you'r after.

  8. I've hot rodded a couple of squiers, and the results have been very encouraging. At least with a squier p bass you can mod it pretty easily as the components (pickups, tuners, bridge, nut etc..) are standard sizes. Many manufacturers offer upgrades for these at varying prices.
As stated earlier though, if there's nothing holding you back with your bass as it currently stands; leave it alone.

  9. Chuck Rainey's done a book on it, though I doubt it'll have tab in it:
    chuck's chording

  10. I think he means one of these

  11.
Same as Eric Johnson used to claim he could hear a difference between different guitar leads.
I'm sure I read somwhere that Johnson can tell what brand/type of PP3 battery is in a pedal from the sound it makes. I hope it was a joke.

As an aside (but keeping on with the fretboard theme) has anyone got, or heard of, a fretboard made from Lignum vitae? It's meant to be pretty hardwearing. Lignum vitae Fretless applications?

  12.
Did anybody ever get into the Lyle Lovett country/ jazz/ blues stuff in the 90's. Oh happy car crash....
Happy Car Crash? Is that a reference to Lyle's distinctive appearance? :)

  13.
I know of at least 4 bassists in Baildon and there seem to be quite a few other members quite near too.
See if you can have it al fresco where the dodgems used to be, near the top of Shipley Glen Tramway. No volume restrictions there, and a pub nearby!

  14. This ebay shop in the US has a few G&Ls nitro tone. It's mainly guitars but there's a few basses as well.

  15.
Am I right in thinking that Deans have a variable reputation?
I've got a dean 5 string and it's really good. It's probably made in the same factory as most of the other far eastern basses. The 5 string Deans do have a 35" scale, which you may or may not want, given your familiarity with short scale basses. The electronics are alright as well for the price.
I wasn't that impressed by the Dean fretless - for me the GW35 was a much better bass.
Am I the only person that think dean make alright basses? I suppose 'try before you buy' springs to mind, irrespective of which marque you go for.

On the subject of the squier active 5, you might be able to buy one and get it defretted for around the £300 mark, so that may be worth considering. The fact it doesn't have any fretboard position dots screams "defret me".

  16. I'd let the bass age naturally, otherwise you could be making a big mistake.

I've got a VMJ myself, and despite it's modest price tag I wouldn't want it ruining!

You could always get a dirt cheap secondhand bass to use as a 'test subject', to see if controlled exposure can have a desirable effect.
