Did gigs for them twice and both times the promoter turned up and set the gig up but then left soon after and saw no sight of him the rest of the night, until he came to collect the money for the tickets we sold of course. There was also no "promoting" as such, didnt see any flyers or anything just a facebook page.

Not having a go at the promoter and it has been almost 2 years since I last played a gig with them so they may have changed, but it wasn't the best.

I never lend gear out now and luckily my current band understand and respect my decision.

Was that "Heartrock" by any chance?

Hey dude I was in your position about 1 year ago. Doing the same kind of gigs in the same area and the amount of times I would turn up to a gig like this and because I had decent gear, the promoter would just assume that I was going to let all the other bands use it. :dash1:

I don't like lending gear out as I don't like the idea of using someone elses gear and it breaking, but my band at the time were really forceful like your guitarist is ("Just lend it this once") and it would happen frequently. Its not a great feeling and if I was you I would stand your ground and stick to your guns.

Used to always do those kind of gigs at the three tuns in Gateshead, always a really weird mish mash of different genres and you would just end up playing to the few friends you had brought down and the bar staff.

We're playing the Telegraph, heart rock is the promoter.

I'm used to loaning out gear as I do it for my youth gigs that I run with City Youth Music up in Jesmond, but not gear that I'm gigging with.

I know that feeling all too well. It's not great.

Ah, that could change things. It then comes down to trust; are your fellow band mates capable and willing to look after your interests after you leave (make sure your gear isn't abused, load it out with theirs etc...), or will they get 'loaded' and end up rolling on the floor with some of the 'fans'..? In various bands I've played in, both scenario have been true, so it's a judgement call, really, down to you. Prudence dictates self-preservation, maybe..?

Our other guitarist is very protective of his gear and everything so assuming it would be the same for mine.

Reading your post I wonder why you're even bothering - you've decided it's going to be a disatser already, so why are you playing ?

Unfortunately I only found all this infomation out last night. The only other things I knew was turn up at five and I'd agreed to loan someone my head because they'd agreed if there was any damages they'd pay for the repair. I wasn't expecting to have to take my own cab to a gig as-well and the info about the other bands wasn't given to me.

From the glowing description you've given, I doubt that the other acts will be punishing your band's gear, certainly not the acoustic fellow. Keep an eye (and ear...) on the settings and enjoy the evening as best as you can; give of your best and learn from all the bad, but also all the good bits. I hope it turns out better than you fear. Be aware, of course, that, if this is a first gig, there are far worse one's further down the line; we've all had 'em. It goes with the territory.

Apparently the other guy who's going to use it knows our guitarist.

But the thing is, he's two mins away. I'm not, just because of timing I'd need to leave early which may put a downer on someones set.

What do you possibly have to gain for all this bother?
Truthfully not much, apparently a promoter is coming down to possibly give us a support slot with someone.

(Promoter can be trusted, I know the guy. He's honest)

Would like to point out my guitarist is pushing me to loan gear out. I'm fine with loaning cabs out, if I'm using them as I'm pretty responsible with gear, but this has fail written all over it.

  7. So guys, my band is playing our first gig tomorrow and there's been a couple of issues. One of which is it's a multi-genred night. With a so called accoustic act that dubs his work as a "Journey chronicling his depression over the last few years" an Indie band and somebody else. Now we're a Metal band first and foremost with older influences (So no chug, chug breakdowns) I've never really been a fan of multi-genred nights mainly because people tend to leave after their mates band has finished and doesn't support everyone (Which they should, but it's not an issue for us)

Another thing is lack of space and gear. We're playing somewhere which isn't a venue. It's a pub that puts on gigs because the promoter can get the function room above there. Apparently it is the size of a shoe box and the organization hasn't been great. Thus far, we have been told that there's a drumkit (but bring your own pedals and breakables) and I was originally told that a band would be providing two Marshall Bass cabs for me to use, then I turn up at rehersal last night and the guitarist of my band is convinced he told me that I was going to use my own set up and band share it for the last two bands. I'm not exactly keen on loaning gear out, due to the story in a Glenn Fricker video about the Day Glo Abortions who blew up a kids JCM 800 in the eighties, just left and didn't pay the guy compensation for it. Twenty five years later.

And another thing is, we've got good gear if we are going to loan it out and a guitarist in another band is adamant on using his Marshall MG and cab (ew) so we may need to loan his God awful cab.

What's your thoughts on multi genred nights and loaning out gear?

Get a single screen (one colour design) and get some tshirts, we use shirtysomething.com, nice and friendly. If you have no recordings might be worth borrow a decent set of mics or something and recording a couple of songs and getting someone on here to make it listen-able, then burn them onto cheapy cd's and give them away with the t-shirts / almost as flyers!
That sounds like a good idea.

Was about to sell patches and stuff, but I don't know if it's worth it as Awesome Merch does it for 40 for 50 patches. I'd have to sell at least 15 to make a profit. Might be a good idea though,

Also one of the band got a prototype shirt and claims it was 12 quid to print it... That doesn't sound right to me. It's good quality though.

If I was you, start small then, maybe some badges and stickers? They are always cool, everyone loves badges and stickers :)

Congrats on the support slot, what band is it with?
Risen Prophecy in June! Didn't want to say anything as it's not been officially announced yet, but we should be there.

Hey guys, looks like my band have a support slot in June with an up and coming Metal band. They've played Festivals and have featured in magazines like Terrorizer and Metal Hammer.

I was going to think about getting some merch made for it, so we could potentially sell stuff and get the word out there. Has anyone done this before? What would the most cost effective approach be?
To be fair, budget isn't unlimited as we're really small (Yet to record an EP and playing our first gig on Friday) and playing places in Newcastle that are tiny as of yet.

Yes the new models are supposed to have this problem resolved. If not, you can use an inline XLR attenuator adapter.

And you don't need a cab connected to record, only full tube amps have that requirement (like the 15W guitar version of the Tiny Terror), this is a hybrid with a solid state power section and no output transformer.
I didn't realize this, my apologies for bad advice.

Just searched a few threads on the Orange forum. Apparently it's not possible to DI straight from the amp. (I've just tried it with my OBT and it hasn't worked)

E: Was referring to doing it without a cab. My mistake and error for wording.

My answer in these threads has always been and always will be Mike Mills of R.E.M and Bruce Foxton of The Jam. :)

That one bassist who made me want to play bass. Will see him live one day I hope!

Mike Dirnt of Green Day often gets overlooked yet he has some great basslines under his belt.
Was about to post this, used to be really into him when I was much younger. Not so much now, but still underrated none the less.

  15. Great advice. Thanks!

I feel silly for not asking this sooner, but I've just received my bass terror and noticing the speaker outputs are a different type to what I've used before. What sort of type are these and where can I get some? Also are there any where one half of the cable is the type for the bass amp and the other is a standard jack so I can plug into a cab that's only a jack if needed (The rehersal places only have cabs that have 1/4 jack slots and not this bizarre alien type.

  16. As someone that's had a little experience in this area, I think it's important to get someone that is at least knowledgeable, but most engineers should be experienced enough to know what they're doing. However if you're working with a producer that calls the shots on everything from what mics you use to placements and arrangements. I think it's best to get someone that understands what you do.

Been asked many times on here naturally but the basics seems to be keep it simple, relax, prepare but don't tie yourself up with it and mostly have a great time and look forward the second one.
Yeah, thought it would have been.

Should have specified in the OP that it was more about the electricity used and keeping you and your fellow bandmates safe if somewhere has potentially dangerous/unclean electricity. Maybe it's something slightly paranoid, but I've heard stories about people getting electrocuted onstage and I want to try and prevent that from happening.
