  1. Hi,

Cant find any useful info regarding on The Web.

Got brand new Thomastik Spirocore 3/4 Light for my 3/4 Thomann Plywood DB and found that "G" sounds like "foam muted" - like G on a P-Bass with foam placed underneath.

It does happen with an open string and any position on a fingerboard.

D and A they ring as hell, E - not as good nor bad I`d say.

G is NOT twisted - checked very carefully. Action - around 5mm at the end of the fingerboard

This problem did not exist with Pirastro Obligato Set....

I will play with sound post position but before that would like to know what actually the problem is?

    Thanks in Advance!

    Cheers,

    Tomas

Is this the one? If so I'd be interested to know your thoughts on the instrument, particularly unmodified.

The tone sounds good to me, thanks for posting it!

    My pleasure!

Bad news It needs following mods to get to that point:

    • 1. Strings, the ones fitted - horrible sound and KINKED (in the factory i guess?)
    • 2. Fingerboard - came DRY as.... desert(?) and mountains and valleys plus some leftover glue on surface (well, who cares in the factory?)  - needs lots of sanding to get some concave. 1h of sanding maybe more  -  I do not recommend it if You are NOT DIY Man/Lady   also lots of sanding to get rounded edges - otherwise you could CUT your fingers. 10 minutes of work. Looks like 10 minutes in a factory is too long...
    • 3. Spacing and height at the Bridge - really bad from factory(!!!)  Space between strings and height measured from top of the fingerboard. I was forced to RESHAPE whole curve and make new grooves. G D A strings were higher than E (lovely)

                Bridge after fix:

    • bridge.jpg

    • 4. Strings height at the Nut. Common but easy to fix. My G string is around 0.1mm above fingerboard. E string 0.2mm - no buzz at all empty strings
    • 5. Muting strings between the bridge and tail as they would RING constantly while playing

I do understand it`s a simple cheap instrument but will not forgive:

    1. Unfinished fingerboard

    2. Sloppy  Bridge setup

Only bought it as knew I`ll manage to fix things especially ROSEWOOD fingerboard not maple one with NASTY paint on it...

    I was only pleased with:

    1. QUIET electronic  - VERY quiet

    2. Paint job

  4. Hi,

After HOURS of work, reshaping the fingerboard, bridge, filing bridge and nut, modding the pre-amp, changing strings to used Obligato I have managed to get this kind of sound from My Stagg Deluxe(ROSEWOOD fingerboard):

I believe these are one of the first and maybe only in The UK - sound sample of THAT model....

DI > Reaper - EQ (380Hz @-15dB) and tiny bit of compression...

What do you think? Forgive me sloppy playing(!)

Well your wife has the right idea and you are very lucky that way.Go for it!😉

Not particularly good pics but this is me with the Stagg I had and my Engelhardt Swingmaster ES9, not a very well regarded bass by some, but it looks great and sounds good for the music I play.

This photo explains your Avatar....  great studio and good looking DB too...

Fingerboard made of birch (Betula albosinensis)

I got Stagg EDB Deluxe (rosewood fingerboard) and after LOT of work plays and sounds great...

Shame Thomann does not make EDB with rosewood or ebony fingerboard...

I do not think you can "fix" birch ebonized fingerboard - you can rosewood one or ebony.... just my 2 pennies

plus birch is rather soft wood I guess :)

    Ebony - 3220  Janka scale

    Rosewood - 1780 Janka scale

Betula albosinensis - Red Birch - 1260  Janka scale

Why actually they bother to make an instrument with rather SOFT fingerboard???? I`d pay that £100 more for rosewood or ebony...

Well... looks like I`m a dreamer....

Be careful, upright is addictive, but so much fun! 😉😊

Well well :) I was scared to move on Electric DB but now I prefer to play (actually learn) on EDB than play electric bass so looks its too late.... I`m already collecting money for DB(!)

After Stagg`s arrival wife  said: " I was thinking you are getting Double bass not some sort of ugly stick! 🙄 "

NOTHING is better than a sound of a Double Bass - NOTHING.... I play fretless too and still insist DB sounds more "woody"....

That is pretty strange, a lot of drop with the jack out. I didn't keep track of my batteries on a regular basis when I had the Stagg  but did check them before each gig and replaced them if they had dropped much but I can't remember the details.

For one person it will be nothing for another plenty.... I do not care as my stagg draws only 7mA.... and I`m a far away from gigging yet :)

    Cheers!

The Stagg I owned and the Yamaha SLB200 that I use now both have a power switch in the output jack and some owners are not aware of this and wonder why their batteries don't last. If the cable is plugged in the preamp is on.

    ...

    Very good point.

I was aware of it long time ago... before went to passive basses. Can`t afford "proper"  DB so must use stagg and its active electronic.... :(

Just for a bit of info. Before the mod after about week of playing I guess 2-3h in total  battery voltage dropped  about 1V - In a week WITHOUT jack inserted into Stagg`s output.

So 20mA draw from factory is A LOT I`d say...

SLB 200.... say nothing... wish I could afford...

    Cheers!

    Hi,

Just did step 2  only and from 20mA it went to 7mA.

    2. Disconnect the supply rails to the two LM386 power amp chips (pin 6 on each -heat and lift with a pin)

Re. Step 1. I have found on the internet that:

    Quote

    - TL062 is the low power version of the TL082.
    - TL072 is the low noise version of the TL082.

I`m very shocked after I have found that my EDB Deluxe is quieter than my P-Bass or Jazz Bass. No hiss not a TINY bit of ANY noise!

I did not bother do any shielding as preamp`s casing  acts well as a shield

Thanks For sharing this will prolong  battery life  by 3 times!

I have cut the lugs with sharp blade. No heat used... (It`s one way ticket - you wont fix it back!)

  13. Hi,

Fender knows how to make sure new Classic Vibe Basses will not be better than MiM or USA basses (which WAS the case IMO):

     https://shop.fender.com/en-GB/squier-electric-basses/precision-bass/classic-vibe-60s-precision-bass/0374510505.html?rl=en_US

    Poplar body... seriously?

Will this give you any sort of low end?

Or maybe I`m totally wrong and they are still good?

    Cheers

    Tomas
