1. I agree in many ways with Jeff Berlin, who is a great player. I think teaching crap like warm up is a waste of money and time. I could tell the planet that for f*** all. Stretch your fingers a little and don't try to be Victor Wooten in the first 30 seconds. Having said that, according to Zappa, JB was one of a greedy bunch of mechanics, so he fired JB and Vinnie C and canceled the tour. Don't blame him.

  2.
I suppose that works a bit like a snooker player - in order to play those shots they obviously have to calculate angles, forces and velocities, all in their head in a fraction of a second. Except they don't, and when was the last time a maths professor became world snooker champion?
It's a point very well raised. My little bro is a world class, championship winning, pro snooker player, and I don't want to put words in his mouth, but it's one hell of a lot more complex than that. It's natural talent, tenacity, competitive personality, immense amounts of practice, knowing your history, sheer love of what you're doing, and above all, belief in yourself and unwillingness to compromise. I'm afraid I am now too old for all that and cannot practically make that amount of dedication. I would lose too much.

Here's a good cover of the Diamonds Bassline .

    Ooooh that's nicely done!

  4.
I guess what your saying is, it would be good to realise a BALANCE, of both emotional inprovisation and technical knowledge!? Oscar made sense also!! the experience you gain from the time you put in on the instrument, show in your playing.

I would think that the theory is a platform for the emotional mind to work from. Blimey im getting deep. :)

The only trouble is i have so many bass/musical things going on in my head that thay may not come light without theory????
Mate, I know exactly where you're coming from. I have constant nightmares about it. I know I'm a good player, with experience, feel, timing, expression and tone. But I'm not at all comfortable improvising over anything complex. Then again, that's not really how I see myself anymore, I feel like a little improv is ok but I'm here to do a job. Doesn't stop me wanting to have the ability to improvise like a demon over anything you put in front of me though  I'm a very visual/aural learner and I find theory pretty difficult and I don't really practice, I get far too distracted. I'm not very comfortable with all this but I really ought to be comfortable with myself and my uniqueness, I suppose we all should. Depends on whether you want to be a session type or not. I learn off the CD what I am told to by my bosses and turn up and play like it's supposed to be, with feel, timing, expression and tone. I get a real buzz performing live so that's my payoff.

I vaguely remember something Steve Vai said a long time ago, practice, practice, practice and your fingers will become eyes. Something like that, except maybe I should add, they will become ears.

  5. Ahh, the magic of youtube! Digging the vids!

Actually, this is me on guitar, the bass ones have never been put on youtube :)

No idea how to embed the clip, tried the other day with one, failed miserably!

For RUSH fans only, I suppose. http://youtube.com/watch?v=MxqIVtHPCgA

  6.
well mabe yes, but ive got ts that say bilaabloodybong and reebockynikey or whatever so why not markbass, it might start an interesting conversation at a bar some night. Just a thought, im not proud, do you think it would help me pull?, whoops been married 25 years!
I was going to start my own fashion label to rival that of FCUK. But what I'll do is get some decent looking apparel printed up with my logo. CNUT (after our esteemed King of course). The logotype comprises that name and a graphic of a wave coming to shore and a throne. The shore is that of a red tide with loads of dead logos all over the beach. Reckon there's a market? :)

  7.
Am i the only person that thinks it's wrong to wear a shirt if you don't own/never have owned one of those basses/amps/whatever?
I just think it's all wrong, period. Get some proper clothes! :)

  8. I'll probably lose a few friends over this, but why in heaven's name would you want to wear them?? That stuff looks really uncool, IMHO of course. The only thing I ever bought was a RUSH thong for my lady, as a joke, naturally. She can't stand RUSH so she's never worn it and thank god for that! I don't want to be thinking of Geddy Lee when I'm visiting that region ;-)

  9.
+1

I think this is the lot I just got a Sansamp Programmable BDDI from for about £125-130 inc postage.
Wot a bargain, eh?!

I only chose the Para because of the mid suck on the other SAs people were talking about, you noticed any?

  10. I got the SAPDDI based on what folks have been saying on here about them. I got it today and it's brilliant! I am really sorry to say it sounds much better than my Hartke VXL which is now, sadly, a backup. The SAPDDI sounds warmer and richer.

I got it from http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/proaudioland for £115 including postage to the UK. Made them an offer $10 below the buy it now price. Dispatched really quickly too.

Just though I'd let you know.

  11.
Zoot allures by zappa has a lovely bass line and is such a mellow tune.
I love the guitar in that too, it's another beautiful (of soooooo many) Zappa tune.

  12. Glad it went well too!

It's all about practice and getting to know your voice. You really need to be careful and warm up properly, your vocal folds are very delicate. Don't shout and scream, do lots of research on the www about singing and adopt a good technique. I really can't play bass and sing at the same time, even though guitar and singing is never a real problem for me.

Keep at it and sing in the shower, car, etc. Humming is really beneficial too if you need to be quieter.

    Good on you!

  13. Sorry, I'm in a DJ/sharing mood :) I have loved this fretless bass/kit piece for nearly thirty years. Now I want to learn how to play it. It will take me ages but I feel it will really teach me a helluva lot about fretless bass, one of which I am building at the moment. I've played fretless before in a very heavy alt/hardcore band, but that had a lined neck, the one I'm building has no markers at all.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=lIG_EY5N3T0 (not quite all of it but the only thing on You Tube. Some geezer dubbed it on to his mountain bike ride).

It's actually an overdub Zappa had O'Hearn play over a medium tempo 4/4 track. Zappa superimposed it on to a previously recorded performance of a slow song in 11/4. Zappa more or less specified the notes. As Zappa said, the interesting and subtle interplay between the bass and the kit never actually happened.

    I think it's just beautiful.

  16. I'm digging my DR Black Beauties at the moment! They look, sound and feel great. They're on my Warwick.

Got D'Addario Nickels on my headless, they're not bad.

Got Warwick Yellows on my Jazz, not bad either.

Got some LaBella flatwounds for my fretless but I haven't finished putting it together yet.

Think I'll be using DRs from now on.

I get most of my strings from the States via ebay. Much cheaper than buying them here.

  17. To kick off ..

Largest was the Larmer Tree Festival main stage last summer, probably 70ft wide and 30ft deep. Great fun running around that with the dry ice going off!

Smallest was the Mau Mau Bar in Portobello Road which is a bit like playing on a dinner table, 7 piece band with kit and keys on a stage about 12ft by 7ft. Had to play my headless in an URB style! The place is brilliant though, amazing atmosphere and full of people drinking and dancing.

I think I prefer big stages, but small club atmosphere is almost unbeatable.

  18.
Can't agree, it's got the best middle section in the real book. If you can make a really good improvisation in that section you can really play.
I love Ipanima too! Great number!

One I hate to death is Dancing Cheek to Cheek. Bloody despicable.
