1. I've been playing bass for about 15 years now and play live a fair bit. I just can't imagine wanting to play guitar live again, can't even really get a proper buzz out of playing guitar anymore. I love playing bass and I just got a Corvette $$. Tried one in the shop through a MarkBass and kind of fell in love, hope it's not just lust ;-)

I'm planning on getting a POD or something for recording guitar. Bass gives me the chills so I reckon I can live with myself :)

  2.
ive got the hohner the jack bass

and i use either the elites stadiums or the rotosound swing bass strings

i may look into the d'addarios
Rotos didn't fit mine, used to play Elites on my Jazz, don't like the way they feel anymore. I am very happy with the D'ads.

    Cheers.

  3.
Have you tried Status Graphite's Double Ball Strings?

    Status Graphite

D'Addario also do a double ball nickel set (the ESXL I think)

    Andy :)
Andy, you are a very bright star! I got the D'Addarios today and they are bloody spiffing! Exactly what I was after. Smooth, bright, easy on the fingers and a pleasure to play. The tensions are much more even too so a lower action is on the way. Thanks again, I will dedicate a song to you at the next show ;-)

    Cheers!

  4.
Hello Mod Machine - I think you will find the guitarist is very interested in your bass sound issues and loves you dearly...as you are the driving sound behind KILTO TAKE. His face unfortunately has a dissinterested look about it...but that is down to mother nature being cruel. I think he may have his own issues to deal with...as he has more delay pedals than you can shake a stick at...but I can assure you the love is there my friend...

Kilto Karl is the best player in the world and we love him.

Hope I have shown my interest in you now...did I mention that we love you...oh and your bass sounded the nuts the other night at our BBC gig.

    Yours lovingly,

    Kilto Take's guitarist

Hah Hah! Very nice bass and guitar actually! Excellent band.

  5.
I had one and also found it sapped my mids and that the dive was too fuzzy, swapped it for a hartke VXL and havnt looked back, the VXL is a great sounding, truly versatile pedal that for me really nails that valvey grind, as well as being a DI and preshape and external eq, great great pedal.
Yep, love my VXL too. Bit of a flawed masterpiece really, the knobs are absolutely crap onstage, who in hell wants mirrored knobs with a tiny black dot on when you're under stage lighting?? Useless. Also the pre/post switch has no indication which is in and which is out when the other switches do so I keep forgetting and have to carry the manual around with me. Still love it though :)

  6. Just ordered two sets of D'addario ESXL170s from http://stores.ebay.co.uk/MyMusicStuff They reckon they're designed for Steinberger and their licenced hardware so they should fit. And they're NICKEL!!

I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks so much for the advice!

  7. Ah, no I haven't. I would be concerned they would not fit Steinberger hardware though. The D'Addarios might be worth a try actually, I've been using them on my guitars for years and like them and I guess they have Steinberger in mind with their design. I'll talk to Rob at Status about their strings too since I hope to be getting one of their Streamline basses within a few months.

    Thanks for the tips!

  8. I use the Hartke Bass Attack which works really well. The Preamp is cool and has really good tone shaping and the tube distrtion effect ain't bad. Got a balanced XLR out, line out, parallel out (uneffected) to go to your amp, takes phantom power, battery and 9v, has a ground lift, pre and post switch. I don't bother with an amp, just this straight to the PA. It has two footswitches for the shape control and the eq. It's very versatile. You can use the line out for phones.

I've played some very large stages with just this and just use the wedges for monitoring, sound guys seem to be pretty impressed with it after initial concerns. Great for recording and silent practicing too. It's about £75.

    Good luck mate.

  9. I have a Hohner Jack and boy am I having problems getting decent strings with short enough wraps. I tried Rotos and the wraps are too long, tried Elites and the 105 E was too thick to fit in the head slot.

I spoke to Hohner USA who said "The Jack bass ships with LaBella S100S double-ball strings, from 45 to 105 gauge. The headless slot should be identical to the Steinberger, as it is licensed through them". Got these and although they fitted perfectly, they were really horrible, even compared to the original LaBellas when I bought the bass new. They look and sound dull, the E is much duller than the others too. They also feel rough and sticky. This is a real problem for me because I dance and jump about a lot live and sweat makes them even stickier which causes me to miss notes occasionally during the faster bouncy tunes, makes swing very difficult too. And I tried two sets from different suppliers just to make sure I didn't get a set of duffers, they were the same. I REALLY HATE THEM!! But I cannot find any alternatives.

I recently tried Warwick yellows on my Jazz and they feel smooth and slippery and lovely to play with a rich, warm and bright tone. They are nickel. I dream of finding some correctly fitting double ends like this but Warwick don't make 'em, and I can't seem to find others despite trawling the www.

Have any of you found anything better or got any suggestions?

Sorry for the long rant. Cheers!

  10.
And boy will we share it with you!!! :)

Welcome to the world of Basschat!
Hah hah! Thank you!

  11. I just found this place looking for info about headless basses, feels like a good place for the soul.

I've been playing four strings for about 15 years. I have been a guitarist for over 25 years too but I seem to have the mind of a bass player these days, I much prefer playing bass. I don't have a bass amp, I use preamp/DI only. Makes life a lot easier ;-) I write and record my own stuff for fun (myspace.com/exmatics) can't be bothered to put a band together to play it live though and I don't really like my own singing voice enough either.

I am currently playing with a couple of Transglobal Underground satellite projects, Doreen Thobekile/London Zulu (ex lead singer with TGU - Electro-ZuluFunk) and Krupa, the current lead singer with TGU, kind of Bollywood meets the B-52's. We play all over the UK.

I shall probably be getting a Status Streamline soon, but need to take a trip to Colchester first.

Anyway, it's very nice to meet you all. I imagine I shall be asking for your wisdom on many occasions.

    Cheers!
