Haha, the reason I did it is different though I imagine. I wanted to make a "slap fret" for my fretless (when I had it). I needed a fret and the easiest one to get out was the 16th one. It was only then I remembered that it would mess the others up. So then I decided it best to remove the others.
Dirty bastard.
OK, my 2p: TOO contrived in the case of EE means that they sound (to me) like they deliberately decided to be a pop band that produces 'serious music' (as opposed to the formulaic pop of their peers), so that they appear to be credible as well. That is what comes over (to me) in their music. Nothing wrong with that of course - it's an angle which is obviously working well for them and their investors. Bottom line is, I don't like what they do. It's just a little over-produced for my liking. I prefer music that seems to be more spontaneous and organic. That is my humble opinion. If we all liked the same music, yadda yadda. But then I don't like Rush either, so there you go. *puts on Geddy Lee false nose, wig and glasses and hides in washing machine*
Fair enough mate. I had no idea you liked jazz though, interesting. -
I also took the frets out after the 12th on my first bass. It's a great thing to do! Well done to you, and the other BC helpers, this should be a gas!
I have to agree. Each to his own and YMMV and so on, but their material does sound a little too contrived for my taste. Which wouldn't matter too much if I liked what they do, but I don't. The singing in particular I find irritating, but of course that's just my opinion, folks! I don't want to get caught up in an EE love/hate thread, so I'm off before 'Fear Of God' gets here and gives me a tongue lashing!
All music is 'contrived'. What does TOO contrived sound like? -
I've often said the same thing. You can't wait for good music to come to you in these days. Not after Simon Cowell and co. have cut the throat of Pop and drank it's still warm blood.
This Simon Cowell trip is very misguided. As has been said before so many times, there has been innocuous populist music in the charts since they began. The throat of pop music is very much intact.
Never heard of them before. If it's true, as the OP has said, that there are ads for them all over the internet then it would seem to me that their record company are pushing them hard on the tails of the succes Alt-J have enjoyed recently. "If you liked these guys then try these for size!!!" EE don't do an awful lot for me. It's like they're trying to hard, a bit fussy.
Rich, EE were formed at the same time as Alt J but their releases pre-date Alt J by 4 years. They achieved notoriety before alt J, they were getting industry and broadcaster plaudits long before Alt J. They sound nothing like Alt J. What does 'trying too hard' sound like? And why is being fussy about the music one makes a negative thing? -
Check out Band on the wall in swan st Manchester, really cool music venue have a lot of big name people on but also do some other stuff, worth contacting them and having a chat. They are really in to up and coming talent and if they like you I am sure they would put you on at some point, they many different things going on from gigs to workshops with fantastic musicians of all types. Great venue great people, no dickheads e.t.c. Band on the Wall is a not-for-profit venue run by registered charity Inner City Music. They exist to present the best music from around the world and support their main stage events with a dynamic education programme which operates throughout the year - both in the venue and in the community and at local schools. They also set up stuff at other venues. Also they put a lot of singer songwriter types on like kit, Sunday they offer free entrance and host a lot of acoustic singer songwriters Link http://bandonthewall.org/
Super! Thanks Stephen!
What size venues are you aiming for?
Mike, it will probably be smaller pub/club type venues that put on multi-band evenings, we are not looking to headline, just be one of four or so bands playing. We just want to get about a bit, but we need to try to cover expenses or at least some of them, but we recognise that's not always going to be possible. Thanks mate.
Was stuck at work and speakerless while this was doing the rounds, finally seen it. Really brilliant stuff again Nige. Like this, hope it gets the recognition it deserves.
Thanks Dave, that means a lot!

We might be touring a bit this year, so if you have any good ideas for venues or promoters I'd be really grateful We've delayed the EP launch until late March/early April as we are rerecording a song we're not fully satisfied with. The launch will be at Bush Hall in West London, and http://mayflysmusic.com will be supporting us, they are ace! Cheers! And thanks Nx
That's totally what it is actually! I would even go as far to say prog synth pop. I actually agree with nearly everything you have said silddx, except what songs i like. They are very creative, and in terms of musicality, also great, but there was just something about the album that i didn't like, and i think to start with Cough Cough really just made it have to overcome that the entire way through the album, and i just didn't find anything that i liked enough to give it an over "It's really good". But i agree with you, this is one of those bands that will shut up the whole "Pop is full of X,Y's and Z's" kind of people. I don't listen to much pop myself, but i know that quite a few people in the pop world are actually terrific musicians, and very talented indeed. They aren't all auto-tune sex objects. You're a fan because you like the music, i would be a fan if the music was a little bit more appealing to me, but other than that, i couldn't fault them. It is incredible how clean everything is, there's nothing in the album that they didn't intend to be there, nothing even slightly out of place. I've never encountered that, it's pretty impressive.
f***ing hard to play live too, I imagine. Lots of multi-tasking going on in a Rush kinda way. The singer and the bassist both got degrees in contemporary music at Salford, where BC's Jake Newman used to be head of the bass department. -
Prog pop, sounds fair enough :-) I always regard General Discussion as being more bass related, rather than music in general, but no biggie (is that a phrase that makes anyone vomit?)
It used to be, but the name and purpose changed to GD rather than GBD. -
I've not heard any of their recorded stuff, but saw them live about five years ago at The Social in Nottingham. I'm surprised to hear them described as pop, as they were pretty rocky and quirky, almost verging on prog at times! Looking forward to having a listen to the album. Regarding heavy marketing of the band, how does that make a difference to whether or not you like a band? It just makes more people aware of them. Btw, should this not be in Off Topic?
Prog Pop is how I'd describe it. Why Off Topic? It's a general discussion about a musical ensemble, OT is for rants about the price of clown outfits and announcing you've found love or whatever. -
Its the northern twang, even when i try and sound different it aint happening
It certainly is I love northern accents, I can't stop doing Charlie Chuck impressions.
Excuse me for being an old cynic, but the pop machine is currently busting it's arse to get EE in our faces. I've seen lots of pop boys (and girls) come and go me, and I'll make this prediction: EE will be totally forgotten by summer. And yes, I do have envy issues.
That's what you have to do these days. PROMOTE PROMOTE PROMOTE. You run the risk of pissing a few miserable old gits off I suppose -

I started an EE thread a while ago and they seem to have some respect from a good few BCers, I posted a clip from this album in it. I love Cough Cough, but my favourite number at the moment is Torso of the Week. I think it's a glorious album, they are extremely creative, the lyrics are wonderfully written and interpretable at the listener's whim. For me this band is a shining beacon of great songwriting and musicality. I'm thinking they have a very bright future. At those who reckon the world of pop music is crap and keep bitching about how they can't find any good music because they are blinded by Florence and Jessie J and Gaga (who are all excellent IMO) should check this band out. Jeremy Pritchard is a great bassist if that matters to you I'm absolutely loving Arc. -
