1.
I have a Mesa Walkabout - its big enough for virtually all of the 'punk/alternative' venues eg, we played with it tonight at the Purple Turtle in Camden. Great sounds (due to tube preamp) and plenty loud, plus very one-hand-lift portable
See if I hadnt gone for the LM3, I would go for something like this....without a doubt. Its a shame guitarguitar decided a new one ordered in (eg not display stock) would be an extra £500, (with regards to the Mesa WA).

I really need to try keep with the LM3 as I really like it, but get an awesome small cab or two.

How was the speaker in your old MB combo?

  2. I was looking at Bergantino and Markbass cabs, with emphasis on Berg due to how happy I am with the HS410. But, and the big but, it it really worth getting 2 1x12s when all in all lightweight 2x12s arent that much lighter than my Aguilar DB212 cabs. Not only that, the price on new Berg gear is astronomical and I could get a lot with 1100+ quid.

Pretty open minded to other stuff....

I think im asking too much or Im being too picky.

  3. I've been round in circles about cabs, for months.

I have fat too many mid sized cab, but I enjoy them all.....I dont want to sell any.

Tried loads of combinations, looked at lots of prices.

Moving to London will mean I need something smaller for certain gigs, plus me and the girlfriend are selling the car if we live fairly central.

    Any ideas?!

Scrap it and just take the LM3 and/or good DI like Tonehammer/BDDI?

OR....is there a holy grail of small and awesome tone bass cab out there. I mean 1x12 small, x2 basically, or a small 2x10. So its micro rigs basically, which work with the LM3. Not bothered if its not massively loud, as long as it sounds awesome.

Maybe I should just go for a PJ Combo?!

    ARGHHHGHGHHGH

  4. PICS!

Also, guitar-wise, I sold my Fender Deville which was too loud for my needs and not really a mad fan of 10s with guitar, so Ive got a Dual Terror and an Orange PPC212 in Limited Edition White on order :) The Dual Terror is amazing for its size and price, and has options of either being on 7, 15 or 30 watts. 30 watts all tube is damn damn loud.

  5.
Just want to update this thread. I have owned a Lakland Skyline Darryl Jones for a good few months now and generally been very happy with it. The build quality is excellent. You can't fault it in anyway and it looks superb. It also sounds really nice. The neck is nice and thin and pretty flat and the bass hangs well. Its a great sounding and playing jazz bass. However, there has also been a few things that I have not been so happy about. Yes it sounds very nice, but the tone is also very deep. Very bass heavy and I have always struggled to get a bit of sparkle out of it. I even got a comment at my first gig with it saying it sounded really nice but it needs to cut through more and this was with me trying to cut through. The other issue with it is its a very rigid bass. I have an ESP Jazz bass which seems to flex and move with you as a player. It feels soft to play and moulds into you. The Lakland feels really stiff and rigid and does not seem to flex. I feel like I am attached to a pole. Its also very heavy at about 10lbs.

I have just recently got an Fender American 75 Re-Issue jazz and it is a totally different bass to the Lakland. Sound wise it is excellent. Lots of attack, punch and sparkle. It still has the bottom end but a much more balanced sound compared to the lakland. Its also very light or much lighter than the Lakland. It has a very different shape neck and feel which seems to be more to my liking. It also feels flexible and softer to play and I felt at one with it from the word go. Fel wise, it reminds me very much of my 1977 Fender Precision which was my favourite bass ever. However, quality wise, its not a scratch on the Lakland. It looks rough and ready and nowhere near the quality of the Lakland. It really does look like a workhorse.

So when it comes down to it, both basses are excellent but very different. Tonally and feel, the Fender just suits me better. I would not say the Fender is a better bass, not by a long shot. I would probably go as far as saying the Lakland is a better bass but it has some characteristics that just don't suit me. This is a real shame as I love the Lakland and its a top bass but it does not suit me and I may consider selling it. I never thought this would happen as I love the Lakland brand but I'm not sure I will play her. The Fender just feels right and suits me tonally.
Thanks for this review.

I love the Lakland 5 String DJ, the neck especially. I did notice its a different Jazz tone to what Im used to, but something about that neck on the 5's is incredible. I am a Fender nut, but I really don't think their 5 string bass necks can compete, which is a shame :)

I really want one of the USA 75 Reissue Jazz Basses, but I wish they were available in different colours. I already have 2 natural instruments (MM EB and a USA Telecaster Guitar) so now I want something different colour wise, which is the blue of the Lakland DJ

Hmm...I just cant find another 5 string Jazz that suits me, the Sadowsky really wasnt my cup of tea.

  6. I DI'd tonight and the next band liked it so he did the same...basically his head was on the way out.

I use a Tech 21 Sansamp BDDI....its a coloured Ampeg-ish gritty sound which is pretty good considering all you have to take is a tiny box.

I really like the Aguilar Tonehammer and I intend to get one very soon as its totally different.

Touring with a sansamp is really easy!

    Alex
Fair enough. There is often an anti-4x10 stance though, so I was just making sure he knew that actually 4x10s are still all good, if you want that type of cab :)

  8.
Well no Birdy, because an out board preamp will just do what my amp does. thats all a preamp does... i will just have more confusing amp EQ..

It will be done by a pro i know, so will be very neat..
I heard people mention this. I'd say an out board pre amp pedal is a really good idea plus can use them for DI and other features they have.

    Just my 2 penneth :)

Beauty of a bass....keep it as it is and get a preamp pedal. Some of those pedals do a lot more/different things to an amp.
