1. But if I got a call to play on a rock gig I'd be more inclined to reach for a Precision or a Thunderbird than for a Mustang.

Well, that's your call..

I misread your earlier post to imply that a short scale bass was in some way unable to 'make the grade' for certain styles of music; having played Precisions for 25 years before my current squeeze I wondered which styles these were.

2. "Very surprised at the suggestions that a shortscale sounds just like a longscale. Quite clearly YMMV, but every shortscale I've owned (= lots) sounds markedly different to a longscale, with a greater degree of "thuddiness" which works very well for some things (blues, reggae, quite a bit of light jazz) but not so for other things."

May I ask which are the musical styles that you consider a short scale to be less suited? - just curious..

My Mustang does a mean P Bass tone and I'm yet to find a musical style where a P bass doesn't work

3. Yes indeed, why upgrade it..I understand the counter arguments - there are others around, buy a Yamaha, buy an Ibanez, This bass stands on its own - the Squier price point could lead one to think that its a piece of rubbish to be avoided, OK I've tweaked mine, but total spend for me has been a shade over £300 and it sounds awesome.

I wouldn't spend money on such cheap instrument if the part ain't broken. If it was me i would sell it and buy another bass, for the same money, with better sound/components (won't say wich but you know what i'm talking about ;) )

Oh... I'm really sorry to read this, which one did you own?

5. Just for full disclosure - My upgrade path has been.

Dunlop strap locks - Which all of my basses have
A Sandberg Bridge - The BBOT was its weakest feature and I like the Sandberg design
A Kiogon replacement loom - fitted after the tone pot developed a noise
I made some spacers for under the string tree.

It still makes me smile every time I play it..

6. I wondered if anyone else had come across the Youtube Channel - Real Bass Lessons....?

Berklee Professor Jim Stinnett - they seem to be aimed at the novice / intermediate player and Jim presents them with warmth and authority - its easy viewing and quite refreshing from some of the Toss that's out there

7. I have a dislike / tolerate relationship with FB. I'm currently on my third account.

I keep and eye on stuff of interest, but no friends and don't post, I screwed down all of the privacy settings and so don't receive anything from it,

When I log on I find it quite amusing that I get recommendations of people I may know.

8. ^ I understand the desire to change out stuff on a £250 bass and as previously stated I've done it myself. On this bass the only thing that I don't like on this bass is the bridge which I may change for a Sandberg - not so much for the high mass, but more I just like that design.

For the money didn't know what to expect, but I'm delighted with mine and it brings a stupid smile to my face when I play it.

<Edit>
Ref how did it sound up-pugged? - this is a point of note, I knew from the moment I was unboxed that this bass would sound good.
