There are few bands that you can genuinely say you have no idea what to expect. Off the top of my head, the only one I can think of is The Cardiacs.

I love the Cardiacs - I'd say that they don't sound like other bands, but there's a definite "harmonic DNA" to their music which defines the sound.

"harmonic DNA" I made this up and even I think its Bollocks.

2. I had an early Walkabout combo that had circuit board design issues, mind you it was well made and sounded great when it worked - moved it on and bought a S/H Walkabout (which incidentally isn't to easy to walkabout with as a combo) which has been faultless.

Briefly owned a Prodigy head - which I just didn't like.

He has actually said it consistently in most of his interviews to anyone who would listen. He also has a severe downer on active basses.

Ok When? - I ask, as over the years I've been a fan of JB's playing (well, before he found a chorus pedal) and I can't recall this - what I've read is that a five isn't his instrument and that he prefers passive pickups - but I'd like your source as its an interview that I'd be interested in reading or watching.

Yes... Did a gig on Saturday and the supplied bass amp turned out to be a Fender Rumble 500 combo, which I believe runs at around 350 watts without an 8ohm extension cab.

Had no expectations about it and was quite surprised to find it was really bloody loud at around 40% on the master. Amazingly hefty sound, too. And lightweight!

We need to understand that an amp's wattage rating is really no indication of its perceived 'loudness'.

Ah the Fender Rumble Combo - I rehearsed with a 100w one of these for months (supplied by the rehearsal room) it was never out of puff - they traded 'up' to an Ampeg and I had to start taking my own gear again.

All they're saying is they want the bass forward in the mix.

It's not unknown that guitarists muddy the overall sound - it may be worth considering this, as the band sound is a joint venture

My new band has asked me to find a bass sound that cuts through "to the point where some other bands might complain about it".

I may have missed something - why would you want the bass to cut through "to the point where some other bands might complain about it".

7. Soundman - "Could you turn your back-line down a bit ?
Me - "yes, of course but you'll need to give me a monitor mix so I can hear myself"
Soundman - "Here's your monitor, we'll sort out a mix at soundcheck"
Me - "Thanks - have a great night"
