I accept this logic, but then pretty much all of the massive "sonically questionable venues that rip you off for ticket prices, parking and drinks and snacks" fall into the same category.

Makes me miss the 'tours' of old - a band playing 20 dates at smaller venues spread across the country.

I saw them at the MEN a few years ago, with the most objectionable sound that I have ever heard at a gig.

Just another shout for a Fender Rumble combo - I've rehearsed with a 100w 1x15 one, playing with an 'orthodox' band over the past few weeks, pushing active 5 and 6 strings through it.

Quite, I've just played a gig with a pre arranged back line - on stage sound was appalling, watching / listening back to some video footage revealed a well mixed representation of the band. Load of people dancing and having fun - what's not to like?

I think that these have to come from within you; there are countless simple bass lines that underpin the music beautifully, but if they don't inspire you, they don't inspire you.

The Chain - Love the 'song' part detest the bass line in the middle and outro.

I do think the Bart pickups are a big part of the Roscoe tone so would not wish to change this, it just isn't quite right for me at the moment. I am more partial to Warwick and Wal tone and this bass is quite different from both, so it needs an owner who will love it as it is

Fair points gents - I have the six string version of this Bass with Aguilar DCBs fitted in the factory and it is a beast, whereas the Bart's in my SKB (nice as they are Bart fans) are being replaced

It's just a valve pre-amp. I've used one with a Demeter 800w power amp over the past twelve months.

I've tried a range of guitars through it, passive and active - all sound great. Live it has limitations - the Baxandall EQ can struggle with tricky venues and once the band join in the Angels stop crying and start frowning at the keyboard player.

I just enjoy music and I enjoy having a laugh with my mates in the band, for me technique merely allows me to play music through my bass. I apply musical theory to satisfy my tastes, while supporting the music that I'm playing. The more theory and technique that I know the more fun that I have.

My current squeeze is a fretted 6 string, I sit for hours working out all sorts of tunes, back filled with extended harmony, I guess that I have low goals, but increasingly often a chord or phrase puts a smile on my face, time (as its not a chore) flies by.

This compliments my professional work as an engineer, where I design, create and deliver solutions to mundane problems. The highlights of this are creating a something technically sound and elegant - much like music.

Like engineering, music doesn't require recognition nor ego.

I have an Xotic 5 as a gigging bass, its ace. I wouldn't say that there are iconic tones - its just very flexble and works with a lot of music, its well made and easy to play.

But for those guys that do like playing music that features slap, double thumbing and hammering on, the practice and learning of these technicques is essential. I struggle to see anything bad in someone who is trying to create music - this music may not be for me, but that's a different issue.

Concentration (if you can call it a technique) is my biggest issue. Being self employed working long hours, mean that tiredness has an impact on my playing.
