  1. And, staggering in late again...

Going off at a tangent from the 6-in-1 wonder oven theme (although an air fryer is mentioned in one verse) I instead decided to celebrate a comedian, a singer, a professor, a philanthropist, a cricketer and a cartoon character with an in-depth(!) delve into what makes them who they are. What they do have in common is that they all share the same surname, Fry. Ended up doing that as I couldn't think of six folk with the surname Oven.

You want words? You got 'em, buster (but they're hidden below)

    Spoiler

    Fry!

Stephen Fry used to be on QI

A clever fella, quick-witted and dry

    Erudite, a brilliant wit

    Also General Melchett

Blackadder had to deal with this guy (baaah!)

    Martin Fry sang with ABC

His younger brother's name is Jamie (true, that)

Poison Arrow, All of My Heart

The Look of Love, they all did chart

Top ten hits, they had three

    Hannah Fry is a mathematician

    Who doesn't deal in superstition

The Secret Genius of Modern Life

Destroyed an air fryer with a knife

    She has a happy disposition

Elizabeth Fry in 1780 was born

    A champion of prison reform

For better treatment, she was the driver

She got her face on the back of a fiver

The paper ones that were easily torn

    Fry!

    CB Fry was an all-rounder

He could also be a bit of a bounder

Had a problem with the mania

Nearly became the King of Albania

It may have helped him sleep a bit sounder

Philip J Fry appears in Futurama

    A very funny animated drama

For a time we never knew whether

He and Leela would get together

But they did, and now they've found their nirvana

4-string cigar box guitar, Les Paul copy and P-bass copy. Ableton provided drummery programmery tomfoolery. A bit of RP80 for guitar effects. Recorded and dusted down with the dynamic duo of Wavepad and Audacity.

I know a drummer who has used a stage name since the70's, for tax purposes, he says.

I think it was Captain Sensible (born Ray Burns) who said that he and some of the early punks changed their names to help avoid the DHSS from sniffing around too much as they were still claiming 'the dole'.

  4. Again, a late one...

Another poor, shipwrecked sap falls for the sound of the sirens. Though he escaped with his life, he now spends his days tormented as he watches and waits for a ship that never arrives.

Spoon, moon, June-alike lyrics to pick apart hidden below:

    Spoiler

    Out here in the twilight

    I remember them call

Sirens lured me to this place

Spellbound! I was in their thrall

    I see this endless ocean

And I let out a sigh

    On this island of solitude

I've been left high and dry

    All at sea

    What will be, will be

    All at sea

    What will be, will be

    I scan the horizon

    But no ships ever come

    For hours I stare

And my feet are getting numb

    The aurora dances

    Way up in the sky

    On this island of solitude

The time has passed me by

    All at sea

    What will be, will be

    All at sea

    What will be, will be

I scoured the array of sounds within Ableton this month to piece together the various synth layers. MT Drums, Westfield Les Paul guitar, violin bass and the siren sample at the end came from Sample Focus. Vocals rasped through an Apogee Mic+ by the unmelodious stylings of yours truly. Wavepad and Audacity did their usual sterling work.

  5. Got one done again just in time...

Hey, what's the rush? Life's too hectic. Take a stroll, breathe a little and just enjoy being in the moment.

Eko 12 string acoustic, Vester Catalina P-Bass, Westfield Les Paul, Yamaha keys and a drum sample from Looperman. Recorded without any bells and whistles with Wavepad and Audacity.

I think all bands should bring a professional performance and professional behavior.

I agree. Too many things started to slide with that band. When people get sloppy it's always an uphill battle to get things back on an even keel.

Ouch, that’s a really dumb thing to do.

Yep. That was one of various reasons why the band didn't last much longer after that.

In my opinion all bars and restaurants should comp food and certain drinks for the band. It's just the right thing to do as long as you don't have band members that would abuse it.

I know a drummer and vocalist who would 🥴

  8. We had a great venue we played about 3 times a year and we'd always drag a good few with us to pack out the place. Always a buoyant, appreciative crowd there with no hint of trouble. Stopped getting asked back when the landlord noticed that, one time, both the drummer and vocalist had smuggled in their own supply of beer and, in the singer's case, his wife's stockpile, too. Three gigs gone tits up, all in aid of saving a few quid at the bar. Terrific. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Me and the guitarist were not happy bunnies.

@upside downer Good mix. The slury synth bass riff makes my head go funny, in a good way, and so does the arrangement and phrasing. It has good drive and evolves as it goes with some subtle surprises. I enjoyed it.

Cheers for that. I've had a quick listen last night to everyone's and, as usual, both the variety of ideas and quality of the tunes is a credit to all.

  10. After a fight with both my ageing laptop and a cranky Soundcloud, I've finally managed to upload this month's effort.

The Sage. Who is he? Where did he come from? What does he want? What does he know? Why has he started breakdancing in the old part of town? Has he got the moves? Can he still do them? Will we have to call an ambulance for the mysterious old coot?

There's a wee bit of guitar and a drum sample (or two) from Looperman but Ableton is Employee of the Month as I cobbled the various synth and bass lines together by programming everything using the 'noises library' within.
