This. The market decides, as always. If you don't get a bite on something at the price you're asking, you can either keep it or ask for less. The market is, of course, completely dependant on the state of the economy, but we have to operate in the world we live in, rather than the one we'd like to live in.

Pretty sure you were one of the posters that gave me the biggest beating when I was urging some restraint on pouring gasoline onto the inflationary bonfire. Sadly most of my worst fears are being realised and it’s starting to get pretty unpleasant.

Inflation is becoming entrenched and the effects of tackling it is starting to cause real pain for those with debt, particularly mortgages and rents.

Hopefully you may be able to see that I wasn’t posting out of malice but with a genuine concern for ordinary people trying to put a roof over their heads.

I've shut up shop right now.  Too much adulting to do.  I've noped so many tasty looking things by saying "that's a car clutch", or "that's getting my utilities account back on an even keel", or "that's money I need to save to insure against whatever the next effing domestic disaster is", etc.

I think the wider economy is about 6 months away from this conclusion.

Agree with the comments above. Added to that, some (not all) prices for 2nd-hand gear are ridiculous. I realise that the 'market and demand' create these inflated prices, but those of 70's Fender Jazz basses and Wals, to my mind are crazy. Obviously, many will not agree with me, but how many basses do dentists need? 😉

How many stamps that will never be used or bottles of wine that will never be drunk does anyone need?

  4. Things are starting to slow down in the BC market place and the wider economy. I think there is a growing realisation that high prices are becoming embedded and are proving hard to shift. Attempts to do so are making life difficult for people with mortgages and unsecured debt on things like credit cards and other loan repayments. There is less money available for non essential spending.

It’s likely going to be a tough few years whilst the mess is cleared down. Sadly the UK chose the long grinding path rather than the short but brutal route back to growth.

  5. Glad that The Teskey Brothers didn’t do the same in Bristol the other week. I also fit the angry face not overly enthusiastic profile. That gig in particular my back was playing up which made my natural visage even more surly. I found some of their stuff a bit samey and had it been a festival would have wandered off for a beer on occasion, but had a great time anyway and they are an excellent band.

If you’re stuck for something to listen to I can recommend the album Jerusalem by Alpha Blondy, it’s a mixture of different song styles and Aston Barrett on bass, i like this one

Used to play it a lot to get myself through night shifts.

Sorry to hear that anyone has lost money and thanks for all the good advice.

Not directly related to this scam but worth mentioning while security is on people’s minds, check that your phone doesn’t show the contents of incoming messages on the lock screen. There were reports in the news of a spate of thefts where people had phones and bank cards stolen from their locker while they were at the gym, then their bank accounts were cleaned out. The way this worked was the thief got the bank account details from the card and used them to set up the app for that bank on their own phone, which the bank verified by sending a code in a text message which the thief could see arriving on the locked phone. On iPhone you want to set Settings>Notifications>Show Previews to ‘When Unlocked, not ‘Always’.

Personally I would never leave my phone in a locker at the gym. At the very least make sure that your phone is SIM locked.

The hacking isn't done by some character in his bedroom. It's done by organisations with server farms, and whole call centres full of staff dedicated to making scam calls and setting up fake Facebook profiles and pages.

It's not one man with one computer trying one password after the other to see which one it is.

There are plenty of one man band ‘script kiddies’ out there making a PITA of themselves with the low hanging fruit.

The Friends and Family thing is a pain. I've asked for it as a seller, not because I can't be bothered to work out the fees (though it's a pain) but because otherwise one is vulnerable to malicious chargebacks by scammers. PayPal doesn't have a great reputation for fixing things sensibly. Mind you, I've never asked for dollars or anything else weird.

Point is, you need to establish trust before buying anything on teh internetz, and it's a good idea to take time doing that. Better to miss out on a possible deal than to lose a bunch of cash or an expensive bass.

TBH there are so many scammers about combined with fosters poor couriers that for anything over £50 I would only meet and collect/pay in person.

Yeah I do similar and change a part of the password but thinking I should let my iPhone choose a stronger password

The only downer to this is a lot of websites have a criteria that is pretty weak (8 characters, a number, specific special characters) and reject the stronger password. Same with some of the password managers which can also be a little too vigorous in jumping in and trying to “help” with creating or changing passwords. I use them but can be more hinderance than help to elderly parents!

MFA (2FA) is the best solution wherever possible.

Almost all account hacking happens because someone uses the same username and password across numerous websites. Eventually they get lured to sign in to a fake site (phishing) or they sign into a real site with poor back-end security, and their username and password get on a list and sold to other scammers. The end-user scammer hunts around to find the sites that the victim uses, trying their username and password until they get into a useful account like Basschat.

The most important thing you can do to protect yourself is to use a different password on every single website or service. We're told that passwords need to be hugely long and complicated which no doubt helps, but it's vanishingly rare for a scammer to try and guess a password. Even a password that's a couple of letters or digits different to another one that you use will provide hugely improved protection

This. A password manager is the simplest solution. If you are really old school and have to write things down try a simple option. Choose a few words that make sense to you eg if your born in June and drive a blue Golf then JuneblueGolf could be a core part of your password that you remember. Each subsequent site could be appended with a unique new part which is written down:

    Basschat =bC1)

    so password is JuneblueGolfbC1)

    and so on.

Not perfect but better than repeating the same password and easy to remember and keep track of.

Even if you are phished and a hacker gets the core password they are unlikely to spend any time even trying to guess or brute force the unique 3 or 4 characters of a different site.

That is a later one I think, The early ones were P/J and had a high mass bridge. The jack was flat on the front, not like the Stratocaster front mounted design introduced later.

I don’t recall them having a high mass bridge, but maybe earlier ones? Mine is from mid nineties:

Found this someone posted on FB a while ago. Don’t agree with all of it, but some fair points made.

If all crypto, digital banks like revolut and wise, paypal, gold and other mediums of exchange are shut down by governments and central banks alongside all fiat currencies then the above may be valid. Otherwise it’s just a bit alarmist. Society may well phase out cash for the same reasons that barter became unpopular. It’s just a bit inconvenient to carry a chicken around.

IMO basswood sounds horrible and it dents really easily. I’d never buy another basswood instrument.

That’s MM Bongos out then. Possibly some of the best sounding bass guitars ever IMO.

  15. Fender Aerodyne Jazz

Great bass in good used condition. Japanese made 1994/95

    Currently strung with flats.

    V. Light weight basswood body with rosewood neck. The Aerodyne range are highly regarded for good reason IMO with the only major downside being the stock pickups which are fairly weak for a premium instrument.

I have replaced them with a Geezer Butler PJ set which is a massive improvement. Every time I pick this bass up it sounds great and is a joy to play but (and it’s a big but for me) I just don’t like the body shape or ergonomics of a Jazz bass.

It’s in excellent condition for its age with only a slight mark from pick near P pickup (see pictures).

Very happy to consider trades with money going either way for either a Lakland PJ, G&L JB2 or other narrow neck non offset bodied bass.
