Yeah, literally a gain control (so can take a bass direct), and a volume. Perfect for putting a preamp (such as the Trickfish or Noble) in front of it 🙂

Hmm interesting Si - thanks for this.

Sorry for being a dummy but I guess you can run your pure amp 800 without a preamp if you wanted to? Just no bass/treble/high mid/low mid control right?

I'm afraid I can't comment on the API Tranzformer or Basscis bpa, but I would absolutely describe the Minnow as clean and musical, in fact, they're the two big reasons why I bought it. As well as really being onboard with the ethos of Trickfish, where they've come from (lots of design elements from Mike Pope etc), lovely bunch of people running that company!

I would have bought a Trickfish amp, but they're a bit chunky for me at the moment, so instead I bought a smaller power amp (GR Bass Preamp 800), and will run my bass through either my Minnow or Noble (on a different board) depending on the the gig and bass I'm using.

    Cheers

Real nice set up. I like the power brick too. I’ve got a Strymon Ojai which is too tall of course.

so is the GRBass Preamp 800 just a power amp then?

The crucial frequencies are double the fundamentals, so 62Hz for a low B. Most of the sound is in the harmonics and the fundamentals can be the cause of wollyness or boominess. I have to be honest that both those cabs look overpriced for the performance.

This highlights how poor my understanding is so thanks a lot for your input. So if the crucial frequencies are double the fundamentals meaning a low B is 62Hz, do you think a 1x10" (and the TF110 specifically having a frequency response of 50Hz - 18.4kHz) will handle the low B okay? Ultimately, I confess that I think I'm going to have to plan a trip to some place and try a couple out.

Since they're both from the same manufacturer and the twelve costs more than the ten it's a very safe bet than the drivers are similar save for size. The likelihood that the ten has as much or more displacement as the twelve is nil. If it did the ten inch driver would be a more expensive driver than the twelve, so the two cabs would be equally priced, and the ten would have a higher power rating as well.

It doesn't. Like a ladies sewing circle there's lots of talk, but they don't actually say anything.

Thanks a lot Bill - you've been real helpful mate.

I use a six-string so considering the low B is around 31hHz and the TF110 handles lows of 50Hz whereas the TF112 handles lows of 35Hz, I think I'm asking the impossible.

  5. Thanks a lot for your help folks. I really appreciate it.

  6. I used a Tone Hammer with two SL112s - I liked them a lot - nice and light of course but they definitely have an "Aguilar" sound. Frankly I don't think you can go wrong with them overall.

For what you need, I think it depends on how loud your band play and whether you all go through the PA, etc., etc. To play safe, I'd say a TH500 driving two SL112s will cover you.

I haven't used this myself but I saw some new GRBass equipment at NAMM that is VERY light - the GRBass 1x12 cabinet weighs 7.5kg whereas Aguilar's  SL112 weighs 11.34kg.

  7. I tried out for an originals band a few years ago - I'm reasonable ability wise and I learned all their songs, wrote/prepared basslines and played along to their CD for a couple of weeks. I'm also very, very reliable, turn up to rehearsals and gigs on time, have my own transport, have good equipment and I do what I say. The audition went really well - good feel, no bum notes, etc., etc.

They tried out another guy at the same time - I knew him well - he was a very, very good natural bassist. But I also knew he had a reputation of being very flakey.

A week went by and I figured they probably went with the other guy but chased up anyway - I got a response from the band leader/singer - "I wanted to go with you, blah, blah, blah but we went with the other guy because the guitarist and drummer overruled me, etc."

I responded and said I was disappointed because I really enjoyed playing with them and wished them all the best, etc.

Then I got a text and email about a week later to say the other guy hadn't shown up to the two band rehearsals since the audition, wasn't responding to their messages and did I want to join.

I politely declined - I didn't feel I was cutting my nose off to spite my face either - I figured I'd either be walking into a band where two of the three members didn't really want me there anyway or the band leader is a liar.

    The entire Funk canon.

I always hear these great lines and great techniques; slappin' (no 'g'), poppin' (likewise) etc, flamenco strums, two handed tapping etc. All great from a technical point of view but, God, the music is s***. The one that I love and hate at the same time is 'Run For Cover' by David Sanborn. The funkiest bass line ever but, basically, like all Funk, it's chewing gum.

Most of the bass gymnastics music I hear is dreadful to my ears.

Not crazy quick or mad playing but I absolutely love this by Rich Brown.

    Happy Christmas.

They’re incredible instruments. I remember playing them at Bass Direct when they first opened, I decided there and then that I wanted one. If I sell this then I’ll get another, this time a 6 string with an ebony fretboard. Apart from that, identical to this. The 33’’ scale makes playing so easy.

6 string with ebony would make this perfect.

Great seller here folks - GLWTS.

It really depends what sort of stuff you play. If you don’t do any sort of soloing / melody doubling / chordal playing, then it probably doesn’t matter too much.

    Completely agree here.
