Squire Vintage Modified, Just bought - Can't believe how good it is.
logicred replied to logicred's topic in Bass Guitars
Interesting. I had a spare set of active EMG - JVX pickups I grabbed from the US ($179 ish) and just popped them in the Squire VM (was really the main reason I bought the squire as I thought the pickups would be bad and didnt want my EMG's to go to waste!). Plugged the bass in and have not noticed any tonal differences. Very very unexpected. I have swapped out vintage fender pickups with these before and the difference was chalk and cheese. I should have done a before/after recording, but to my ear there was not any difference. I guess that's another plus side to the Squire's stock pickups! The strings have soon gone dead quickly though. The E string is slightly muted too (very noticeable when fretting first fret), I suspect crap strings? -

I have an old Fender Squire bass which is chipped and a horrible colour. Was looking at getting it sprayed in sunburst. Could someone point me in the direction of somewhere I could send the body too to get sprayed? Even a rough price would be great. I don't want to sell the bass ;-(

Just grabbed a Squire Vintage Modified 70's bass for £240 from my local PMT store. I have played vintage Fenders and also had a 2005 Deluxe Fender Jazz which was great, so know how good fenders can sound and play. I kept reading about these new Squires being good and people are now using them for their main bass so thought I would try one. I saw lots of S/H ones for £160 ish but I could see the wood joins which put me off. The one I just bought was seamless at the front and looked really nice in natural. I could not believe how great this sounded when slapped. It was easily as good as my 2005 Deluxe. I have some EMG-JVX pickups which I Was going to drop in (and still might) but out of the box this thing sounded great. If anyone fancies a second bass or always wanted a Fender, I would try one of these in a second ;-) http://www.pmtonline.co.uk/squier-vintage-modified-jazz-bass-70s-electric-bass-guitar-in-natural-finish.html

Here is another bass which is identical to mine bar the extra plate and is £1000 more (but also without the original thumb rest, swapped scratchplate and tone pot and slightly more worn! ...) My dad picked this up from a car boot many years ago for next to nothing. It's sat in his bedroom for years without really being played. I have played bass for a while and used to go round to his to try an amp out or something and would say "Dad, where is that sh*tty old bass" and would give it a go. It actually played really well but I thought nothing else of it (thinking it was a cheap £100 bass from years back and thought Aria Pro II was crap). Anyway, to cut a long story short, I took it home to identify as I could not find one in the Aria Pro II online resources. I assumed it had had a paint job as I found nothing ANYWHERE on the internet or old brochures about this colour. After a post on the Jap forum, turns out it's an SB-600 from 1980 and has a set neck and is in tobacco sunburst. I did some more googling and found ONE small photo which was the same. Anyone else seen one of these? It's lost its orig pickup and switch, but I have seen aftermarket pickups for Aria Pro II's which should work fine so will go about restoring it. Cracking neck on it!!! Anyway, thought I would share. Weird neck sunburst too!

NO TRADES thanks ;-) Hi all, just want to be clear here. If you want a slightly worn untouched 1974 Jazz bass, go to Andy Baxter as he will have some top stuff at 2-3 times the price. If you want a Fender 1974 Jazz with a small plate covering a hole that was done sometime over the 40 years and think that £1000 or more is a reasonable amount to reduce the bass by, then read on.... ;-) Based in mid-Norfolk. I *will* ship the bass but am loathed to be honest. I would much rather you see what you are buying due to it being a vintage instrument with wear. That said, I have photographed in explicit detail (and can provide more photos) so if you are prepared to organise a courier that would be fine. Serial number: 407847 1974 Fender Jazz bass. Last of the 4 bolt neck I think. As you can see, it's 40 years old and has the usual wear to the body. I love this look personally. At some point over the 40 years an extra switch was added to the body near the bridge but the hole has been covered with a pro made plate to match the scratch plate. I did look into a luthier filling the hole and respraying the body to make it 100% which was deemed as easily do-able (skimming the hole to make precise, then filling with piece of wood and finishing), but fell in love with the worn look and have left it that way. I do not have the original ashtray or neck pickup cover but these can be purchased new and fit directly on. I am unsure but the ashtray cover 'may' foul the switch cover though. Neck pickup sounds great, bridge pickup sounds great, tone control works fine. When both pickups are at full chat there is a slight dip in volume. I have investigated this and apparently it's normal. There are marks/small chips all over the body and also a couple of marks on the back of the neck which do not hinder playing in my opinion. Truss rod turns fine and works as it should. A truly great bass. Genuinely very very unhappy about selling this (it was made the same year as me!). Looks great, sounds great, great investment.

Thanks for your help everyone. Will take a look.

I appreciate your help. I can't hear any treble through them so looks like it could be the HF drivers. Can I replace/fix these? Can I take the front off and see any visible damage (I know nothing about these!). Or just write them off? Thanks

Hi all, I bought a secondhand PA with a Gigrac 600 amp (tested with my other cheap PA speakers and works fine). The speakers that came with the PA are Peavey Messenger Pro speakers http://www.amazon.co.uk/Peavey-Messenger-Pro-Speaker-Single/dp/B003SQKG48 When I use them with the Gigrac amp OR my old amp they sound really muddy and quieter than I would have thought too. I don't know a great deal about PA so wonder if I am wiring them wrong somehow? My other cheap PA speakers sounds great so I have something to compare them with. These Peavey speakers have 2 inputs and 2 outputs (2 x 1/4 jack and 2 x speakon cables). I don't have any speakon cables so wonder if they are required to make them work properly? Any advice appreciated.
